What to Rent: New DVDs This Week

Parker and Stand Up Guys are also available on DVD this week.

Parker and Stand Up Guys are also available on DVD this week.

Beautiful Creatures

Alice Englert stars as a witch in this romantic, fantastical movie that may fill the void left by the end of the Twilight franchise. Set in the South, the adaptation of the young-adult novel follows Lena (Englert) as she discovers her powers and falls for local boy Ethan (Alden Ehrenreich). Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, and Viola Davis add some actor credibility to the cast, but it's Ehrenreich's charisma that makes the biggest impression. The DVD comes with a trailer for author Margaret Stohl's next book, plus deleted scenes.

Side Effects

Steven Soderbergh directs Rooney Mara and Channing Tatum in a stylish thriller that puts antidepressants under the microscope. When Emily's (Mara) therapist (Jude Law) prescribes her a new drug to treat her anxiety, she comes out of the daze she's been in since her husband (Tatum) returned from prison. But soon enough, she begins to experience unexpected and dangerous side effects that involve her in a murder. Extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette and some fake drug-company commercials.

The Last Stand

A former LAPD narcotics officer (Arnold Schwarzenegger) moves to a quiet border town following a botched operation. Hoping to find solace there, he instead gets caught up in capturing an escaped convict: a notorious drug kingpin who threatens the security of the town. Schwarzenegger proves he's still capable of firing off one-liners, but the humor is generic, as is the action. The DVD will come with several featurettes as well as deleted and extended scenes.

Rooney and Kate Battle It Out in Black and White — Who's Most Fab?

Just the night before, Rooney Mara joined sister Kate on the red carpet for the premiere of her new show.

Just the night before, Rooney Mara joined sister Kate on the red carpet for the premiere of her new show. Now Kate is returning the favor. The actress stepped out for the NYC premiere of Rooney's new film, Side Effects, and even followed up with a sweet tweet about her sister's performance. Aside from the family bonding, the sisters' arrivals again gave us a side-by-side comparison of their personal styles. They set the stage for a style battle with obvious contrasts. Rooney opted for a creamy white Alexander McQueen confection and Kate stepped out in a flirty LBD. But color palettes aside, there are a few common denominators. Each dress boasts a feminine fit-and-flare shape and a more fashion-forward cut. Kate's is certainly a more understated look, and the true beauty of Rooney's dress is in the gorgeous floral appliqués and embellishments. Rooney is also the first to bring McQueen's Pre-Fall '13 collection to the red carpet. As for the finishing touches, Kate looked to a sleek metallic clutch and Nicholas Kirkwood platform pumps with a little more personality, while Rooney let the gorgeous dress take the focus, also choosing Kirkwood heels, but more pared-down, nude peep-toes. That's the fashion breakdown. Now, study up and cast your vote for the sister who stole the spotlight on last night's red carpet.

Rooney Mara was joined by her costars Channing Tatum, Jude Law, and Catherine Zeta-Jones for the New York premiere of Side Effects last night. She wore a white Alexander McQueen dress and Nicholas Kirkwood pumps while Catherine donned a black lace Michael Kors frock. Catherine's husband, Michael Douglas, walked her down the red carpet, which included visits from some of New York's fashion elite, like Donna Karan and Rachel Roy. Kate Mara joined her sister, Rooney, at the event after Rooney attended Kate's House of Cards premiere on Wednesday. It's been a busy week for the duo, who have both been doing press for their two new releases. Rooney attended a Side Effects Q&A with director Steven Soderbergh and Jude in the Big Apple earlier this week and Kate made the party rounds for her new series in DC and NYC. House of Cards hits Netflix today while Side Effects will open in theaters on Feb. 8.

Jude Law and Rooney Mara Couple Up For a Side Effects Screening

Jude Law and a Band of Outsiders-clad Rooney Mara teamed up in NYC last night for a special screening and Q&A session for their new Steven Soderbergh film, Side Effects.

Jude Law and a Band of Outsiders-clad Rooney Mara teamed up in NYC last night for a special screening and Q&A session for their new Steven Soderbergh film, Side Effects. Rooney and Jude were joined by Steven himself, as well as their costar Vinessa Shaw and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns. Missing from the panel, though, were leading man Channing Tatum and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

It was a busy day for both Rooney and Jude. He managed to also fit in a stop by Late Night With Jimmy Fallon. Jude and Jimmy reminisced about their first fights as children and chatted about Side Effects, which arrives in theaters Feb. 8. In particular, Jude gushed about Rooney, whom he referred to as "a very cool lady" and a "great actress." Rooney, meanwhile, had a family night. She stepped out to support sister Kate Mara at her debut of the new Netflix series House of Cards.

Side Effects Trailer: Channing Tatum and Rooney Mara Are in Trouble

Channing Tatum tackled romance, comedy, and, um, stripping in 2012, but the actor is popping up in yet another genre in 2013: the thriller.

Channing Tatum tackled romance, comedy, and, um, stripping in 2012, but the actor is popping up in yet another genre in 2013: the thriller. In Side Effects (formerly titled The Bitter Pill), Tatum reteams with his Magic Mike director, Steven Soderbergh, but the results are decidedly less fun this time around. Tatum plays husband to Rooney Mara's Emily, who lands in hot water after she starts taking a new medication and is linked to a murder. Naturally, her doctor (Jude Law) is also in the thick of the mess, especially when it becomes implied that their relationship isn't strictly professional.

The preview starts out showcasing Tatum and Mara's onscreen romance before quickly unraveling and heading into very bleak territory. Though the trailer doesn't give much away in terms of plot, that's exactly what I like about it — there's clearly something sinister happening here, but I feel plenty of twists coming on. Side Effects opens Feb. 8.
