Fox News Chief: I Hired Sarah Palin Because "She Was Hot"

Reflecting on his 15-year and counting run as Fox News chief, Roger Ailes recently made blunt comments about Sarah Palin.

Reflecting on his 15-year and counting run as Fox News chief, Roger Ailes recently made blunt comments about Sarah Palin. Ailes admitted that he hired Sarah Palin as a paid contributor not for her expertise, but "because she was hot and got ratings."

Like many female politicians before her, Sarah Palin's looks have been a hot-topic since she came on the national scene. But instead of being criticized for her dowdy look or masculine pantsuits, Sarah took flack for a $150,000 "shopping spree" and an expensive makeup artist. Despite the controversy, her telegenic looks apparently helped Sarah Palin gain a career after she prematurely ended her stint as Alaska governor. While I'm sure ratings and appearance go into every on-air contributor decision a network head makes, do you think it was inappropriate for Ailes to say he hired Palin because she was "hot?"

Gay Marriage Moves Forward, Finds More Support

Judge Vaughn Walker rejected the petitions of gay marriage opponents today, ruling that as of Aug.

Judge Vaughn Walker rejected the petitions of gay marriage opponents today, ruling that as of Aug. 18 gay couples will be allowed to marry in California. While the Supreme Court will ultimately judge his decision to overrule California's gay marriage ban, it seems that regular Americans agree with him. For the first time — ever — more Americans support gay marriage than oppose it.

The marriage equality camp is getting love from unusual places. Yesterday when Bill O'Reilly, who's been on a roll lately, asked Glenn Beck if he thinks gay marriage will harm the country, Beck said: "No, I don't. Will the gays come and get us? . . . I believe what Thomas Jefferson said. If it neither breaks my leg nor picks my pocket, what difference is it to me?" See that? Both Thomas Jefferson and Glenn Beck support gay marriage!

Fox News Accuses Jennifer Aniston of Glamorizing Single Moms

Last night Bill O'Reilly took time to discuss Jennifer Aniston's recent support for single motherhood along with two Fox commentators, one of whom couldn't even remember that Jennifer was married to Brad Pitt. The charges against her: diminishing the role of the dad, glamorizing single parenthood, and confusing young people who don't have the "cognitive ability" to know that there is a difference between them and Aniston, who can "hire a battery of people" to help her raise kids. Here is what Jennifer actually said, while promoting her new movie: "Women are realizing it more and more knowing that they don't have to settle with a man just to have that child. Times have changed and that is also what is amazing is that we do have so many options these days."

One of Bill's sidekicks just can't imagine why anyone would want to have a nontraditional family. She said with palpable disdain in her voice: "Yeah women can have their own kids, and not have a husband and not have a partner, but why would you want to?" Sarah Palin Headed to Fox News — Love It or Leave It?

From governor of Alaska and vice presidential nominee to author and future Fox News contributor, the many incarnations of Sarah Palin prove that she's not going away any time soon.

From governor of Alaska and vice presidential nominee to author and future Fox News contributor, the many incarnations of Sarah Palin prove that she's not going away any time soon. Fox News has just signed the polarizing politician to a multiyear contract as a regular contributor.

Whether you love or hate her politics, it's hard to argue that Sarah Palin's blend of conservatism and celebrity won't work well on Fox News. Are you happy Sarah Palin has found a home on cable news, or would you rather not see her on TV?

Rocker Andrew WK, our scruffy Do, Dump or Marry candidate a while back, expresses how much he abhors infidelity on a recent Fox News interview. The irony is that this young rocker has probably been more faithful to his wife than lots of politicians who pay lip service to it. (Mark Sanford, et al — I'm talking to you guys.)

Stripper, 44, Charges Age Discrimination

Exotic dancer Stripper Kimberlee Ouwroulis filed a complaint against a Gentleman's Club strip joint in Toronto because she claims she was let go due to her age. She started stripping at 40 after a nasty divorce, was doing well monetarily, and had regular customers. But one day, her boss said, "Your time is up here." (Click here for her account.) I don't doubt that there were customers who preferred her looks and age, but I also don't doubt that stripping is mostly a young woman's game. What I find incredible is the hysterical conversation that comes up over this in this Fox News clip. First, anchor Megyn Kelly gets wished "Happy Birthday" and says, "Thankfully I'm not yet 44!" (Isn't that a tad inappropriate given the subject?) Then, the Fox News legal analyst says that if Ouwroulis's boss merely made "just one remark, that's not discrimination." Ummm, wha? "You're too old, scram!" isn't discrimination? I didn't go to law school, but that doesn't sound right. What does all of this bring up for you all? About stripping? Age? Fox News? Etc.? Sound off in the comments below.

Sarah Palin Hits the Postelection Interview Circuit

TV journalists have been striking the Sarah Palin iron while it's hot.

TV journalists have been striking the Sarah Palin iron while it's hot. Last night FOX News aired Palin's first postelection interview, after Greta van Susteren traveled to Alaska to debrief with Palin. And this morning, Sarah's chat with Matt Lauer aired on the Today show.

Speaking with Greta, Palin indicated that she would leave the decision to run for president in 2012 up to God. She said:

Faith is a very big part of my life. And putting my life in my creator's hands — this is what I always do. I'm like, OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like, don't let me miss the open door. . . . And if there is an open door in (20)12 or four years later, and if it is something that is going to be good for my family, for my state, for my nation, an opportunity for me, then I'll plow through that door.

And regardless of her propositions for 2012, Palin believes the 2008 campaign trail wrapped up without any bitter loose ends. She told Matt Lauer this morning that: “I have nothing but honor and admiration and love for him and for his family. And I think that that is mutual. In fact, I talked to him just today, again — and [we’re] touching base nearly every day."

Now that the election is one week behind us, do you think we can put Sarah Palin behind, or has her time in the spotlight just begun?
