Comics Come Out With LGBT Characters and Themes

After its first openly gay character — Kevin Keller — came out in 2010, Archie Comics has printed its first gay kiss.

After its first openly gay character — Kevin Keller — came out in 2010, Archie Comics has printed its first gay kiss. The smooch between Kevin and his boyfriend, Devon, angers a Riverdale mom in the comic, which, according to the issue's writer and artist Dan Parent, is a "playful poke" at the real controversy the Kevin storyline has caused with One Million Moms. The conservative group called for Toys"R"Us to take down a magazine that featured Kevin getting married, but Toys"R"Us refused.

This is the latest example of the genre's recent push to make comic strips and comic books more open to LGBT themes after being heavily censored by the Comics Code Authority up until 1989 (not that the restrictions prevented everyone from writing about gay characters). The road to a lesbian Batwoman and a gay Green Lantern has been rocky, but let's see how homosexuality has been portrayed both positively and negatively in comics over the years.

Inappropriate and Sexist Vintage Comic Book Moments

Holy innuendo, Batman! Back in the day, comic books were a favored form of child's play, but who were we kidding?

Holy innuendo, Batman! Back in the day, comic books were a favored form of child's play, but who were we kidding? Judging from some of their — unintentionally? — suggestive situations, it's no wonder adults collected these cartoons, too. And don't get me started on the sexist lessons being taught here. As comic book enthusiasts the world over unite at Comic-Con this weekend, check out these inappropriate and sexist vintage comic book moments!

Help — The Walking Dead Are Attacking the Planet!

Holy crap — we're under attack by zombies!

Holy crap — we're under attack by zombies! The first reports came from Taipei and Hong Kong just after daybreak, and more sightings keep coming in: London, Athens, New York, and LA. Yikes — does anyone out there have a lead on a good fallout shelter?

Sorry to get all War of the Worlds/Orson Welles on you, but marketing for The Walking Dead is exactly that. AMC hired an army of actors, dressed them up like zombies, and set them loose in major cities across the world. The zombies took subways, hung out in train stations, and even zombie walked their way pass the Coliseum. This was all leading up to last night's red carpet premiere in Los Angeles where the zombie march came to an end. I can't wait for the show to premiere this Sunday (that's Halloween, y'all!); I've been a fan since The Walking Dead comic book days so I'm excited to see it translated to the screen.

Aack! Cathy Retires and so Can Single Women Stereotypes

Before Beyonce gave them a theme song, before Sex and the City explained their love for shoes, before Liz Lemon demonstrated their chocolate obsession, and before Bridget Jones performed their clumsy dating mishaps, Cathy the cartoon represented stereotypical single women in newspapers every week battling food, love, mom, and work.

Just like any generalized version of something, the Cathy comic strip could make you laugh when you related, but also cringe at the one-dimensional version of an unmarried woman always on a diet (OK, she did get married a few years ago). As her message seems more and more outdated, Cathy will end her 34-year run on Oct. 3. Check out some of her more classic moments.

5 Cool Things You Should Know About Batwoman

You don't need to be a comic book nerd to think this news is awesome.

You don't need to be a comic book nerd to think this news is awesome. DC Comics has announced plans to give Batwoman her very own series. Batwoman will be the first lesbian character in a title role of series released by a major comic book publisher. Some other cool facts about the unlikely heroine:

  1. Batwoman was originally created in 1956 and then reintroduced in 2006 as a lesbian.
  2. Batwoman was introduced as Bruce Wayne's love interest with the purpose of proving Batman was not gay for Robin. Look who's gay now!
  3. Her "civilian name" is Kate Kane, which sort of rhymes with Bruce Wayne, and she poses as a socialite when she's not fighting crime.
  4. The character served in the military, but was discharged for being a lesbian.
  5. She's also Jewish.

Big News! Archie Proposes to Veronica

Well, Betty already spilled the beans on her blog, but today we'll get to read how it all goes down when Archie Marries Veronica: "The Proposal" hits comic book stores.

Well, Betty already spilled the beans on her blog, but today we'll get to read how it all goes down when Archie Marries Veronica: "The Proposal" hits comic book stores.

That's right: one of the world's most comically long love triangles is coming to an end with the latest issue of Archie comics, which will be the first in a six-part wedding series. For more than 60 years, the endearing Archie character has gone back and forth between perky blond Betty and sophisticated, dark-haired Veronica, to whom he finally pops the question. But as the creators point out, a six-book series leaves room for plot twists.

Did you read the Archie and Betty & Veronica comics as a kid? I'll admit I was always a Veronica girl. Do you think Archie is making the right choice?

Tim Gunn = Marvel Fashion Wise One

Fun! Marvel comics is releasing a fashion comic named Models Inc.

Fun! Marvel comics is releasing a fashion comic named Models Inc. on Aug. 26 starring Tim Gunn. Similar to his role on Project Runway, Tim will act as the "wise one," helping to solve the crime of a young set designer murdered during New York Fashion Week — all while wearing an Iron Man suit! So far, we know Models Inc. will feature three ladies: Millicent Collins (Millie the Model), Patsy Walker (Hellcat), and Spiderman's Mary Jane. Sounds like a fashion paper version of Charlie's Angels.
