Where Are You Most Likely to Get Your News Online?

Though it was nearly a year ago, hearing anything about Michael Jackson's death makes me think about the claim that many tech-savvy people get their news from Twitter — or at least learn about breaking news from there.

Though it was nearly a year ago, hearing anything about Michael Jackson's death makes me think about the claim that many tech-savvy people get their news from Twitter — or at least learn about breaking news from there. But I can't think of too many news stories that I first spotted on Twitter since then. While it's true that Twitter streams are a good way to share information fast, new research suggests people are not getting news from Twitter after all. According to the report, young people are more likely to get their news from Google News or Facebook. Could it have anything to do with constant silly or non-newsworthy trending topics like #justinbieber?

It's only a matter of time until new research claims new top online sources for news, so I'm curious where you prefer to find news online.

The Crusade Against Ground Meat

There's been a lot of talk in the media about E.

There's been a lot of talk in the media about E. coli contamination in ground meat lately, hamburgers specifically. First, The New York Times profiled Stephanie Smith, a young woman who was paralyzed after eating a contaminated hamburger. A week later, Larry King and CNN posed the question "Should Americans banish the burger"? The media is always reporting beef recall stories, which leave me a little freaked out about indulging in the occasional cheeseburger. How about you?

The argument against ground meat goes something like this: in slaughterhouses all sorts of things are flying around, including cow guts, which contain E. coli. Because slaughterhouse practices can be a little iffy, the E. coli can come into contact with the meat to be sold for consumption. Cooking a piece of contaminated steak usually kills the bacteria because the E. coli has only touched the surface, not actually penetrated the meat. The problem with ground meat is that E. coli can easily get onto every small bit of meat, making it harder to eliminate.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to completely banish the burger from my diet, but I do eat less meat these days. Besides being healthier for my heart, the sanitary conditions of large slaughterhouses worry me a bit. When it comes to eating meat I definitely try to follow certain guidelines. To learn them, continue reading.

CNN's New iPhone App Allows Easy Customization, iReporting

CNN launched its new iPhone application this morning, featuring breaking news, video, personalization options, and, most notably, an interactive iReport feature.

CNN launched its new iPhone application this morning, featuring breaking news, video, personalization options, and, most notably, an interactive iReport feature.

The application allows you to search for and follow topics of interest to create a personalized "MyCNN" news feed — from breaking stories about your home state to gossip about your favorite celebrity. Tapping any news story from the main screen leads to two summary bullet points, the main story, and any relevant video. An additional tap on the share button allows you to email the story, choose to follow the topic, or save it to read later. The app also pinpoints your current location to provide weather, traffic, and breaking news near you.

Its most interesting and unique feature is the iReport function, based on CNN's popular citizen journalism feature. Users are encouraged to capture photos and video of breaking news and upload it to CNN directly from the application.

The app is available now at CNN.com, and the iTunes App Store for $2. And if you were to ask me, it's well worth the $2.

Former CNN Anchor Bobbie Battista Now on The Onion

“You watch the news today, and you don’t know what is real.

“You watch the news today, and you don’t know what is real. When I was doing newscasts at CNN, people would come up to me and say, ‘That story can’t be real.’ Now the lines are really getting blurred.”

— Former CNN news anchor Bobbie Battista, now an anchor on the satirical news site The Onion, doing her part to blur the lines between real and fake news even further. Although hesitant at first to accept the job at The Onion for fear that her former CNN colleagues would think less of her, Battista nevertheless doesn't see it as a step down. She thinks cable news itself has taken a dive. To watch an example of her hilarious deadpan reading of ridiculous news, read more

Quote Of The Day: Miuccia Prada On The Frivolity Of Fashion

If you compare it with philosophy [fashion] is frivolous.
If you compare it with philosophy [fashion] is frivolous. But frivolity may be something good, something that is part of our lives. So I don’t dislike it. And what I like is the mix — that in your life you can have serious things, more frivolous ones. Fashion is about beauty and the search for beauty, I think it’s a fundamental thing. No one criticizes if you want to do beautiful homes. No one criticizes if you want to buy a beautiful chair. But so many intellectuals still criticize why you want to wear beautiful clothes, and it’s only our body, so it must be important in a way.

CNN Ratings Falling — What's Your Favorite Cable Network?

So far in March, CNN has trailed Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN Headline News, showing that its no-bias, no-bull angle might not be paying off.

So far in March, CNN has trailed Fox News, MSNBC, and CNN Headline News, showing that its no-bias, no-bull angle might not be paying off.

While CNN does get accused of having a more liberal tone than, say Fox News, the network's personalities usually show more restraint than those on MSNBC.

Perhaps cable news viewers are looking for a little more in-your-face coverage. Then again, maybe if the network really built out its news coverage, and relied less on pundits, it could differentiate itself from other cable news stations.
