Which House Rules Do You Routinely Break?

Rules are meant to be broken, but what's the punishment if it's mama that breaks them?

Rules are meant to be broken, but what's the punishment if it's mama that breaks them? Every home has its own set of rules and appropriate disciplinary action if they are broken, but parents are often the ones who misbehave. A neighbor of mine routinely finds herself buying her tots new Wii games after filling their family swear jar with her own money, rather than her kids', and another acquaintance recently lamented that her kids lashed out at her after she yelled at them because of their no-screaming rule at home.

As parents, we often give up our vices to help teach our children to be better people, but which family rules do you find yourself defying on a regular basis?

Do Tell: What Are You Hypocritical About?

It's hard to practice what you preach all the time.

It's hard to practice what you preach all the time. Sure, with the big things that you feel incredibly passionate about it's not, but with the little everyday things, like recycling or smoking cigarettes, it's easy to break the rules from time to time. So in your personal life, do tell, what are you hypocritical about?

Breaking the Decorating Rules

We've been talking a lot about decorating don'ts, but that doesn't mean that some decorating rules aren't made to be broken.

We've been talking a lot about decorating don'ts, but that doesn't mean that some decorating rules aren't made to be broken. The key is breaking them in style.

For inspiration, check out this feature in House & Garden called Master Class: Break the Rules. The magazine asked a panel of prominent decorating names to share their favorite flagrant violations throughout design history. The list includes such triumphs as mixing 17th-century-style chandeliers with country checkered fabrics, bringing inside furniture outdoors and vice versa, and using industrial garage doors as walls. 30 Min Time Limit: Does That Apply to Me?

The question has been posed if it is OK to ignore the 30-min time limit rule that most gyms impose on their cardio equipment -- Especially, when some of us are training or doing intense cardio workouts and your workout is longer than the allotted 30 minutes.

The question has been posed if it is OK to ignore the 30-min time limit rule that most gyms impose on their cardio equipment -- Especially, when some of us are training or doing intense cardio workouts and your workout is longer than the allotted 30 minutes.

My thoughts: It is NOT OK to ignore this rule. The rule is there so that every paying customer (yup, you're not the only one shelling out dues) gets a turn. If your cardio program calls for longer than 30 minutes and people are milling around looking for a free machine, get off and find another way to finish your workout. Maybe grab a jump rope or try hopping on the rowing machine.

Now if there is no one waiting and tons of free machines, then I do think it is OK to continue on past the 30 minute rule. Just be aware of those around you and use the good ole' golden rule: Do unto others as you would have others do unto you.
