Keri Russell headed to the set of The Americans in NYC yesterday and quickly got into character in a strawberry-blond wig. On the FX drama, Keri plays a Soviet KGB agent posing as an American citizen. The series, which pairs Keri with Matthew Rhys, is now eight episodes in and has already been renewed for a second season.

Keri was on set last week as well but made time to attend the 2013 FX Upfronts party at Lucky Strike Lanes. She showed off her figure in a formfitting leather sheath and met up with fellow stylish star Diane Kruger, who has an FX project of her own on the horizon, The Bridge.

Diane Kruger brought longtime love Joshua Jackson with her when she attended the 2013 FX Upfronts bowling party in NYC yesterday. She wore a Jason Wu ensemble and red Chanel bag as she walked the red carpet and mingled inside the event with FX stars like Keri Russell and The League's Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton.

Diane is in town to do press for her film The Host, which hits theaters today, but she swung by the FX event to promote her new role in The Bridge, which premieres in July. She will play a detective who is trying to track down a serial killer operating on the US-Mexican border. Josh has been staying by Diane's side while she does promotional work around the Big Apple. He attended The Host's premiere in NYC on Wednesday, but stayed out of the limelight when she appeared on Good Morning America yesterday.

Pilot Scoop: The Americans

It's been years since Keri Russell had had her own TV show, but now the actress is a back in a series that puts her in situations Felicity Porter would never have dreamed of.

It's been years since Keri Russell had had her own TV show, but now the actress is a back in a series that puts her in situations Felicity Porter would never have dreamed of. In The Americans, Russell plays a Russian agent devoted to the motherland during the Cold War-era 1980s, along with her onscreen husband Matthew Rhys. I've checked out the FX show's pilot, so I have some insight into whether The Americans might be the next TV series you can't miss.

  • What it's about: Phillip (Rhys) and Elizabeth (Russell) are the average American couple living in the suburbs in the 1980s, with the perfect nuclear family (one son and one daughter) — only they're actually not American at all. In fact, Phillip and Elizabeth are Russian agents just posing as citizens and doing work as KGB agents.
  • Where it works: Russell and Rhys have fantastic chemistry, which serves their interesting relationship; though they've been "together" for years, it's a business arrangement. However, when the series picks up, we find them developing real feelings for each other (which may conflict with the fact that some of their missions involve them engaging in sexual activity with targets for information).
  • Where it doesn't: Some people may be uncomfortable essentially rooting for the enemy, though the cast and crew recently acknowledged that and hope you can watch with an open mind. Also, Russell's latent Russian accent, which emerges in her flashback scenes, is hard to take seriously.
  • You might like this show if: You were on Brody's side in season one of Homeland.
  • When it's on: Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on FX

Keri Russell Jokes That Her Spy Show The Americans "Will Rewrite History"

Keri Russell is coming back to the small screen with The Americans, but her new FX series is a far cry from her college life on Felicity.

Keri Russell is coming back to the small screen with The Americans, but her new FX series is a far cry from her college life on Felicity. Russell plays a Russian undercover agent posing as an American woman in the 1980s, while Brothers and Sisters' Matthew Rhys plays her husband and fellow agent. The stars and their show-runners came to TCA to talk about the physical demands of playing secret agents and whether we'll be rooting for the other side on the Cold War-set show.

  • Since Russell and Rhys play KGB spies working against the American government, the panel was asked who and what we're supposed to root for. Executive producer Joel Fields said that's one of the big questions of the series, but admitted, "It's a little difficult to get used to, [but] we want you to root for the KGB." Russell joked that they "will rewrite history," but the intent is that the audience also roots for the relationship of Philip and Elizabeth (Rhys's and Russell's characters), since they're essentially in an arranged marriage on assignment. Creator Joe Weisberg added that The Americans is "a show about marriage, and the marriage is an allegory for international relations."
  • Russell's role is very physical, and it sounds like she's enjoying her stunts, which include kicking a man's head into a wall in the pilot. She said that's "the cool part of this job: experiencing that kind of masculine aggression." Rhys mentioned that their preparation included martial arts training and that Russell's dance background also helped her.
  • Rhys talked about the parallels of being a Welsh actor playing Americans on screen with this role as a Russian man pretending to be an American. He said that in both cases, there's "a fine line of being so American that you're drawing too much attention to yourself." Rhys joked that to avoid being too American, he concentrates on "not overemphasizing my R's or wearing too many baseball caps." Russell added jokingly, "That's what we do."

Keri Russell Gets Back to Work as a Spy on Set

Keri Russell prepared for a morning's work on the NYC set of The Americans yesterday.

Keri Russell prepared for a morning's work on the NYC set of The Americans yesterday. She was equipped with a coffee in hand as she and her costar Matthew Rhys geared up to shoot scenes for their upcoming '80s-era show. Last month, Keri wore a wig to film with Matthew before a holiday break. The two actors will step into action as Russian KGB spies posing as an American couple living in the suburbs of Washington DC when the drama premieres Jan. 30 on FX. Keri also closed 2012 with the celebration of her second child, daughter Willa's, first birthday on Dec. 27.

The TV series will premiere on FX Jan. 30 and also stars Matthew Rhys, who was previously part of the Brothers and Sisters cast. Keri and Matthew have been working on the project since the Summer and it looks like they're fitting in a few final scenes before the holiday break. It's an especially exciting festive season for Keri, since it's her daughter Willa's first. She was born just after Christmas last year, joining big brother River. Keri and her family of four have plenty of celebrations to come, including the Sundance premiere of Keri's Austenland next month.

Keri's been working on the FX project all month and has been donning various '80s-style outfits, including high-waisted Guess jeans, for her role. Keri already has an exciting year behind her as she heads into the Summer. She and husband Shane Deary adjusted to life as a family of four after welcoming daughter Willa Lou in December, and Keri marked her 36th birthday. It was Shane being celebrated this weekend, though, since he was one of many new Hollywood dads to be recognized on Father's Day.

Keri Russell Takes a Stroll in Brooklyn After News Breaks About Her Return to TV

Keri Russell was seen heading back to her home in Brooklyn after running errands yesterday.

Keri Russell was seen heading back to her home in Brooklyn after running errands yesterday. The actress wore a striped top and jeans as she took advantage of the springlike weather and some downtime between projects. Her current movie, Austenland, is in postproduction, and it was announced earlier this week that Keri is set to make a return to television as she recently signed on to play a KGB spy in an arranged marriage in the upcoming FX pilot The Americans. The show is a far cry from reality for Keri, who has been married to Shane Deary for five years and is mom to 4-year-old River and 2-month-old baby daughter Willa Lou. Keri's last TV series Running Wilde was cancelled after less than one season, but we're excited to see her once again back on the small screen every week.

40 Years Later: Woman in Famous Photo Recognizes Herself

I love this story!

I love this story! The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is currently exhibiting Robert Frank's photographs from his landmark 1959 work The Americans, widely viewed as the photographic analogue to Jack Kerouac's beat classic On the Road. Frank and Kerouac both had similar sensibilities, wanting to show the sprawling, diverse, and melancholy side of postwar America. Kerouac, in fact, wrote the introduction to The Americans. Regarding the above photograph, "Elevator — Miami Beach, 1955," Kerouac asks, "That little ole lonely elevator girl looking up sighing in an elevator full of blurred demons, what's her name & address?"

Turns out, "lonely elevator girl" turned 50-something Sharon Collins saw an exhibit of "The Americans" a few years ago and recognized herself as the 15-year-old in the photograph: "When San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art first opened, I think it was more than 10 years ago . . . I stood in front of this particular photograph for probably a full five minutes, not knowing why I was staring at it, and then it really dawned on me that the girl in the picture was me."
