Kings of Leon's Jared Followill Swoops Up a Nashville Castle

Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill has swooped himself up a proper castle in his home state of Tennessee for $1.8 million.

Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill has swooped himself up a proper castle in his home state of Tennessee for $1.8 million. The 7,411-square-foot, five-bedroom, five-and-two-half-bath home is brand spankin' new, located just south of downtown Nashville. Propped up on a hill, it should offer lots of privacy for the shaggy-haired pretty boy, not to mention those five bedrooms. It's got sort of a Craftsman-meets-Tudor-meets-Frank Lloyd Wright thing going on, which I don't quite adore from the exterior. But the inside does have beautiful bones, like rich hardwood floors, fancy stainless steel appliances, lots of stone, slate, marble — the works. It also has a massive wooden wine cellar, which I totally covet.

In April, Rolling Stone took a video tour of each of the Followills' homes, and back then Jared was living in a small fixer-upper '50s home. So this is definitely a step up in size and fanciness, but I wouldn't necessarily say newer is better. In full bachelor pad style, he had zebra-print sheets and some faux taxidermy in his bedroom, and a big flatscreen for his Playstation 3 habit. I'm sure he'll outfit his new digs with all those must-have rockstar elements, too. I've got 50 (!) photos of Jared's new digs for you to see, so read more

Best of 2009: Celebrity Home

This year we toured dozens of celebrity homes — some for sale, some recently purchased, and some just for our gawking pleasure.

This year we toured dozens of celebrity homes — some for sale, some recently purchased, and some just for our gawking pleasure. Many, as expected, were located in and around Los Angeles. But the one that seemed to blow you all away is a little further from Hollywood Boulevard. Country Billboard chart-topper Alan Jackson's 19,000-square-foot, six-bedroom, seven-and-two-half bath "Sweetbriar Estate" in Franklin, TN, which sits on a 135-acre property, was certainly the most expansive, indulgent, and captivating home I've seen to date. From his 20-car garage to his two-bedroom log cabin overlooking a river, the digs made for plenty of real-estate eye candy.

Nothing Goes Together Better Than Guns and Alcohol

As of yesterday, patrons of alcohol serving establishments in Arizona and Tennessee can exercise their second amendment rights while downing a cold one.

As of yesterday, patrons of alcohol serving establishments in Arizona and Tennessee can exercise their second amendment rights while downing a cold one. How . . . American.

The new laws allowing registered gun owners to carry concealed guns into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol are part of a trend of loosened gun control laws. Ironically, right after the election last November, gun shop owners reported record sales, suspecting that customers feared that a Democratic federal government could curtail the right to bear arms.

Complaints by Arizona and Tennessee's business owners that the new law would hurt business went unaddressed. (Hurt how you ask? You know, when "1 or 2% of would-be Dirty Harrys," as one restaurant owner plaintiff put it, decided to mete out vigilante justice.) As for critics who point to recent public shootings, proponents of the new laws say that the violence shows the need for private citizens to protect themselves with firearms.

The 135-acre property is the most expansive, indulgent celebrity home I have seen to date. It is bordered by the Harpeth River, one of the largest streams in the area and surrounded by equestrian estates. The property also boasts a "stocked and aerated" 10-acre lake, boat house, and three ponds. As for the buildings, Jackson is the proud owner of a 20-car (!) garage, gymnasium, swimming pool, jacuzzi, two-bedroom log cabin overlooking the river, barn with a two-bedroom apartment above, a pole barn, and more. As for the indoor amenities, it's got the works: granite countertops, central a/c, stainless steel appliances, walk-in closets, etc., etc.

The South Needs Some Serious Gas Relief After Hurricanes

Fallout from Hurricane Ike and Gustav has spiraled into massive gas shortages in the Southeast.

Fallout from Hurricane Ike and Gustav has spiraled into massive gas shortages in the Southeast. Drivers in Nashville, TN, where the problem is the worst, wait in long lines and some follow tankers around in hopes of being the first to fill up before a station goes dry.

In western North Carolina local governments have been forced to cancel programs, since there's not much gas to travel to activities. One city canceled athletic events, and another county has limited all municipal travel to emergency vehicles for the past few weeks. Many workers in the region have been told to work four 10-hour days, or telecommute.

In Atlanta, one of the nation's largest commuter cities, many stations have run out of gas, and they have no idea when more will come. Once residents find a station with fuel, they often must dole out $5 a gallon, and wait in 40-car lines. What would you do if your city ran out of gas?

Front Page: Suicide Blasts Rip Iraq, Olympics Sold Out, Arrest in Tennessee Church Shooting

Suicide Blasts Rip Iraq: Suicide Bombers struck twice in Iraq, leaving 47 dead and 240 injured.

  • Suicide Blasts Rip Iraq:
Suicide Bombers struck twice in Iraq, leaving 47 dead and 240 injured. In Baghdad as Shia pilgrims paraded through on their way to a shrine, female bombers detonated leaving 25 dead. The pilgrimage will bring more than 1 million worshippers. In Kirkuk, a suicide bomber hit a crowd of Kurdish protesters, killing 22. Iraqi security forces have been deployed.
  • Olympics Sold Out:
Despite continuing problems with pollution, the events for the Olympics events in Beijing are all sold out. This could be the earliest the Games have reached capacity. Some tickets for events in other cities are still available. 6.8 million tickets have been sold so far — in Athens in 2004, only two-thirds of the tickets sold.

  • Arrest in Tennessee Church Shooting:
A man who opened fire with a shotgun in a Knoxville, TN, church during a children's performance of Annie, has been captured. The attack left two dead and seven wounded. Police have charged Jim Adkisson with first-degree murder. The performance had just begun when he opened fire. One witness said she thought, "oh, my God, that’s not part of the play."

Can I See Some ID? Sex Offenders Get Tag on Their Licenses

Maybe more so than other crimes, a convicted sex offender's punishment does not end with jail time served; it follows him onto the National Sex Offender Registry, onto the Internet, and soon, in Tennessee, onto his driver's license.

Maybe more so than other crimes, a convicted sex offender's punishment does not end with jail time served; it follows him onto the National Sex Offender Registry, onto the Internet, and soon, in Tennessee, onto his driver's license.

Starting Sept. 1, all convicted sex offenders in Tennessee must hold a newly designed license. It will bear a mark to notify police of their sex-offender status.

While I don't envision kids at the playground asking candy pushers for ID anytime soon, it wouldn't matter if they did: ID checkers will not (or should not) be able to distinguish the license from any other Tennessean's, because the mark will only be viewable to the trained eye — like a big scarlet letter written in invisible ink.

Proponents say the new law will help ensure the safety of children. If a sexual offender is pulled over, the license will prompt police to watch for signs otherwise ignored in a routine traffic stop. To see the incident behind the law, read more

Should Barack Obama's Opponents "Lay Off" His Wife?

Tennessee's Republican Party has put out a four minute video loop of infamous comments made by Barack Obama's wife.

Tennessee's Republican Party has put out a four minute video loop of infamous comments made by Barack Obama's wife. In February Michelle Obama said: "For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country" — controversial comments she later clarified.

Yesterday on Good Morning America, Barack Obama responded to the new video.

The GOP, should I be the nominee, can say whatever they want to say about me, my track record. If they think that they're going to try to make Michelle an issue in this campaign, they should be careful because that I find unacceptable, the notion that you start attacking my wife or my family.

Obama said the Republican Tennessee-tactics — which also include a call for patriotic music to be played on local radio while Michelle is in town and referring to Obama using his middle name "Hussein" — are "low class" and unacceptable to most Americans.

Is Obama right to call out the GOP for distracting voters from important issues? Or does Michelle Obama's participation in the campaign make her fair game? If Michelle wants people to credit her for positive remarks, is it only fair to judge all of her comments? When does the negative attention go too far?

Live From the 2008 Tribeca Film Festival

I'm here! 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, New York, New York.

I'm here! 2008 Tribeca Film Festival, New York, New York. And it's like the cloudy, rainy chilliness arrived just in time to make all of us moviegoers feel justified about sitting in darkened theaters all day. Which is precisely what I've been doing, awesomely. So far, I've caught six movies and attended the red carpet event for Tennessee. Here are some of my thoughts so far:

  • Nothing says drizzly Sunday mornin' like a movie about socialite incest and murder. Savage Grace is heavy on the savage, not so much with the grace. Julianne Moore is phenomenal, but this horrifyingly tragic story is difficult to watch and harder to enjoy.
  • I came thisclose to a petite man approximately my size before realizing it was Ben Kingsley, but by the time I doubled back toward him, he was being swept away by his people. After seeing his surprisingly hilarious performance in The Wackness, I have this intense urge to pick that guy's brain.

Tribeca Preview: Tennessee Starring Mariah Carey

Who's got two thumbs and is headed out to the Tribeca Film Festival in a few days?

Who's got two thumbs and is headed out to the Tribeca Film Festival in a few days? This girl! I can't wait to live it up in the Big Apple, stalking celebs and checking out the festival's best new films. Want a taste of what I'm hoping to see during my time at Tribeca? This week I'll be bringing you previews of some of the most intriguing-looking films in the lineup.

Some big-name movies are premiering at Tribeca this year, like Baby Mama, Speed Racer and David Mamet's Redbelt. But I'm equally intrigued to catch some of the less-publicized flicks like Tennessee, a road trip movie that stars Mariah Carey (who is everywhere these days!).

The story follows two brothers who hit the road back to their home state (Tennessee, natch) in search of an abusive father who may be a marrow match for one of the brothers who's suffering from leukemia. Along the way, they befriend a diner waitress (Carey) who aspires to be a singer. According to the film description, "The relationship that brews between the three is a heartwarming, contemporary spin on the American road movie."
