4 Life Lessons That Your Kids Should Take Away From Summer Camp

Memories of Summer camp are absolutely magical.

Memories of Summer camp are absolutely magical. Kids can make close relationships, develop a healthy sense of independence, and have a blast doing so. But camp does so much more than offer kids activities to do during the Summer; it can truly be a home away from home, offering life lessons that they might not learn as quickly if they didn't make the trip. Every camper's experience offers something different, but here are four basic lessons you can expect your kids to take away from camp this Summer.

  1. You really can have fun without technology. In a world reliant on the Internet, it's sometimes rare for kids to look up at the stars or sit around a campfire. Camp allows kids to bask in the natural world and detach from the computer. It's truly awesome to watch.
  2. Meeting new people can be life-changing. Chances are that you've helped your kids develop their current friendships, through playdates, school events, after-school activities, and so forth. At camp, kids are forced to break out from their shell and make new friends entirely on their own.
  3. Pitching is necessary for the communal good. Inspection and cleanup are very basic parts of camp life. If they haven't had to yet, then your kids will learn to do basic chores and to clean up for the community.
  4. If you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all. The golden rule may rule in your kid's school, but having to live with someone you've had a confrontation with brings a whole new perspective to the situation. Plenty of bunkmates have learned that it's never too late to say sorry. It's just important to mean it.

Did you go to Summer camp as a child? What was an important lesson that you learned and still carry with you?

Give Your Wedding Some Summer Camp Love

It's almost summertime, which means the kids will soon be flocking to the great outdoors to get some fresh air (and possibly a Summer crush) at camp. Who doesn't have fond memories of the warm days and nights spent among pine trees, at the mess hall, and around the campfire at Summer camp? Campgrounds harken back to a simpler time, making us sentimental in the process, so it's no wonder they have become a big trend for wedding locations. If you're planning an outdoor wedding, then having it at a Summer camp could be an affordable and fun option. The natural setting — be it redwood trees or a glistening lake — requires little more than some handpicked wildflowers to make it wedding-ready. But really, the sky's the limit. So check out these rustic camp ideas for your big day, and don't forget your canoe and binoculars!

Life Lessons Learned From Summer Camp

Memories of Summer camp are pretty magical.

Memories of Summer camp are pretty magical. Some of my closest friends today are the girls I lived with my first Summer in a bunk when we were just 8 years old. Every Summer, I find myself scouring my camp Facebook page to see who I grew up with who still goes back and what camp looks like today.

As a child, I assumed that camp was the perfect excuse for my parents to ship me and my siblings off so they could get some much-needed alone time. But as an adult, I realize that camp gives kids so much more than an arsenal of funny stories. Here are some of the life lessons learned from fun-filled Summers at sleep-away camp.

  • If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. The golden rule rules. And I know that a few of my bunk mates learned, on more than one occasion, that it's never too late to say sorry. Just mean it.
  • Pitch in for the communal good. I used to cringe during clean-up and inspection, but if I didn't do my part, my entire bunk was full of unhappy campers. You come to learn that helping others always pays off in the end. Do your part and don't cut corners.
  • Being goofy is seriously underrated. You don't need to perform in a camp talent show to remember how to laugh and play like a child! We become so wrapped up in how our peers perceive us. Letting loose is always in style.
  • Be here now. Being present in the moment is some of the best advice I've ever received. No need to worry about things we can't control or what the future may bring. Enjoy the experience, breathe it all in, and remember that life is good.
  • Put down your cell phone and look at the stars. We have become so reliant on technology for absolutely everything. Shutting off your electronics and getting out into the woods can really put things in perspective.

State All but Bans Counselors From Applying Sunscreen to Campers

A sure sign that Summer's in full swing is the smell of sunscreen in the air.

A sure sign that Summer's in full swing is the smell of sunscreen in the air. Drop the tots off at camp and mama's likely to be bombarded with the wafts of the lotion carefully lathered on by mom. But if mama's in Maryland and her tot still comes home with a sunburn, don't be surprised! In what's being called the nation's strictest rules on the matter, the state is now regulating who may reapply sunscreen to campers throughout the day, and it's not who you think.

Starting this Summer, parents must sign a form granting their child permission to wear the skin-saving lotions and sprays. They must also indicate whether or not their tot can have assistance from camp counselors. And if a friend wants to help your lil one put on the lotion, think again. Campers are not allowed to aid each other in the process — ever. The state has issued the regulation in an attempt to prevent inappropriate touching at camp (and this current version is more lenient than the first one, which outlawed counselors from applying suncreen at all), but have they gone too far?
