Do You Watch Stand-Up Specials on TV?

Robin Williams is bringing his comedy act back to HBO this Fall, taping his first stand-up special for the network in seven years and his fourth HBO special overall. He's just the latest comedian to book a special on HBO, which has long been a showcase for comedians including George Carlin, Will Ferrell, Ricky Gervais, Dana Carvey, and many more. Comedy Central has also been a big outlet for stand-up over the years with its Comedy Central Presents series. I'm wondering: Do you like watching stand-up specials on TV? Does it depend on the comedian? Or do you think this kind of thing is best suited to live shows?

Mike Birbiglia on "Olive Garden Italians" and More

I love listening to Mike Birbiglia when he's on This American Life.

I love listening to Mike Birbiglia when he's on This American Life. We all have those moments when what we really should have said was nothing, but we say something really awkward instead. This clip has some of his best bits, including the girl who loved ecstasy but hated water and his riff on "crackers" eating Sun Chips.

David Letterman

Flashback: David Letterman on The Johnny Carson Show

OK, so Dave wasn't exactly laugh-out-loud hilarious (or even guffaw-lightly-to-yourself funny), but he was kinda cute.

OK, so Dave wasn't exactly laugh-out-loud hilarious (or even guffaw-lightly-to-yourself funny), but he was kinda cute. I love the gap between his teeth, and his nervous, Midwestern guy kinda vibe. Oh, and his poofy hair.

Comedian Leo Allen on the Perils of Drinking

I kind of have a crush on Leo Allen (any relation to Woody?).

I kind of have a crush on Leo Allen (any relation to Woody?). I saw him live recently when he opened for the awesome Janeane Garofalo, and although his act started off slow and awkward, it got quirkier and better and funnier. Here, he's talking about how drinking is dangerous because it makes you think you're good at stuff it's dangerous to think you're good at. Like say, de-arming a police officer, or fighting with people on horseback. I share in his wish that, after a night of partying, instead of worrying what I said to whom, I could look on my bedside and find a magnificent work of art I crafted in a fit of creativity. Fat chance, but I'm dreaming the dream with you, Leo!

Wow, this guy really likes movies. I wonder what it would be like to have him follow you around for a day and narrate your life. "One woman . . . one giant plate of nachos . . . in a race against time."

Wanda Sykes gives her two hilarious cents on why the biggest threat to heterosexual marriage is not gay marriage, but rather . . . divorce. (Ba dum ching!) Her solution? Make marriage like the mafia — once you're in, you're in for life. Sounds like a plan! (The last minute is NSFW, so cover your delicate ears before you get there.)

Got Questions For Sarah Silverman?

I am so excited that I'm getting interview access to the first ladies of comedy.

I am so excited that I'm getting interview access to the first ladies of comedy. First Margaret Cho, and now Sarah Silverman! But I wanted to ask you guys, do you have any questions you'd like me to ask the salty-tongued lass who, among other things, wrote and starred in Jesus Is Magic and told her version of a notoriously raunchy joke in The Aristocrats? Let me know by the end of Monday, Sept. 8, in the comments section and I'll pick a few to ask her!

GiggleSugar Interviews Margaret Cho!

When I think of Margaret Cho, I think of her hilarious standup act in flashes of representative scenes.

When I think of Margaret Cho, I think of her hilarious standup act in flashes of representative scenes. There's Margaret telling everyone how weird it is to be an Asian American on an airplane with a flight attendant offering you Asian chicken salad. ("That is not the salad of my people!") There's Margaret imitating her mother's cute Korean accent and puzzling over gay men and their, uh, interest in "the ass." And then there's Margaret imagining how period-centric the world would be if men menstruated. The busy comedian/activist/all-around rad diva took some time out of her schedule to talk with us about her many projects, including VH1's The Cho Show (the second episode airs tomorrow), what it's like to have a day named after you in San Francisco, and who is hotter: Lindsay Lohan or Samantha Ronson?
