Celebrity Women Get Real About Body Image Issues

She may have won two Golden Globes last weekend for her HBO series, Girls, but lately the most-talked about topic in regards to writer, filmmaker, and actress Lena Dunham has been her weight, not her talent.

She may have won two Golden Globes last weekend for her HBO series, Girls, but lately the most-talked about topic in regards to writer, filmmaker, and actress Lena Dunham has been her weight, not her talent. Radio host Howard Stern is in hot water for calling Lena a "little fat chick." And while Lena told David Letterman last week that the comments "put me in the best mood," the 26-year-old has been honest that she's had a love-hate relationship with her body, despite displaying it so freely on her show. She told New York Magazine:

"It's a very specific body. Even great reviews will be like: chubby, portly, overweight. . . . Sometimes I'm like, 'Ugh, how did I make myself the guinea pig for this?' But on the other hand, hating my body has not been my cross to bear in this life. Which I feel very lucky about."

Several famous women have opened up about their struggles with body image and eating disorders. Katie Couric revealed on her talk show that she struggled with bulimia when interviewing another famous lady who's dealt with eating disorders, Demi Lovato. And Lady Gaga, who has faced criticism about her weight gain, launched a movement called A Body Revolution to encourage body acceptance. She said she started it to "inspire bravery," adding, "Be brave and celebrate with us your 'perceived flaws,' as society tells us. May we make our flaws famous, and thus redefine the heinous."

Many celebrity women have courageously talked about what they don't like about their bodies, their past eating disorder issues, and how they've overcome a negative body image. Let's be inspired to accept our bodies just how they are with these encouraging words now!

Meghan McCain Says She's a Big Fan of Hillary Clinton in New Book

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, as a woman you gotta hand it to Meghan McCain for speaking her mind.

No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, as a woman you gotta hand it to Meghan McCain for speaking her mind. She's not afraid to get real about her sexuality and fight back against criticisms regarding her body, and now in her new book, America, You Sexy Bitch: A Love Letter to Freedom (out next month) — which she cowrote with Wet Hot American Summer's Michael Ian Black — the former presidential nominee's daughter isn't holding back on her hatred and love for certain political figures. She attacks former US president Bill Clinton for having "cheated and lied," saying that her parents taught her not to lie, cheat, or steal. However, the irony is that her dad, John McCain, began dating her mom while he was still married to his previous wife, Carol Shepp. Even if she dislikes Bill, she writes that she's a big fan of his wife, Hillary. See some of her quotes from the book below:

On double standards: "There is no real way to be a woman in the media and not have your relationship with sex in whatever capacity harshly judged."

On stereotyping women in politics: "One gets to be Sarah Palin, the gorgeous, stupid airhead. Or Hillary Clinton, the aging, mercenary bitch. I do not think nor believe those should be the only options for women in politics."

On Hillary Clinton: "I disagree with many, many of her policies but have a respect for the fact she pushed through many doors and shattered many glass ceilings for women in politics. I love women who don't put up with sh*t, and Hillary clearly doesn't."

The Highlights From Meghan McCain's Playboy Interview

Meghan McCain is no stranger to racy pictures.

Meghan McCain is no stranger to racy pictures. Back in 2009 the daughter of John McCain caught heat for posting a photo on Twitter that showed a healthy helping of her cleavage. Meghan's in Playboy this month, but it's not doing what you might think. There aren't any soft core shots. But she does offer this gem, "I'm strictly dickly. I can't help it. I love sex and I love men." Here are some highlights, including some talk about gay rights and politics.

On her sexuality: "My friends from home came over to support me, and we got in my parents’ big bed. They have this huge California king and we just stayed up eating ice cream. I’m not a lesbian, if that’s what you’re asking. I’d be the first person to tell the world I was gay. I’m not private about anything. I think you should live how you should live. But I’m strictly dickly. I can’t help it. I love sex and I love men."

On what life would be like if her dad was president: "Oh, Lord. You would have the craziest first daughter ever, who’d be making ridiculous headlines and hurting the administration every step of the way. That aside, I think Dad would have made an incredible president. The recession wouldn’t have been as bad as it is now. We wouldn’t be pulling troops out of Afghanistan and Iraq."

On supporting same-sex marriage: "Who people want to sleep with and who they want to love should not have anything to do with government politics at all. And if you see me in a gay bar, it’s only because they play the best music and my gay friends like to dance. Gay guys love me. It’s the big boobs and blonde hair."

Meghan McCain Knows Beauty Comes in All Different Shapes and Sizes

After Glenn Beck attacked Meghan McCain for her appearance in a skin cancer PSA by pretending to puke at the sight of her, Meghan let Glenn in on a secret: he was the only one who looked bad in this scenario. Last night on The Tonight Show, Meghan fired back again at Glenn's disgusting comments and the attractiveness double standard for women in politics. She also opened up about how she loves her body and shared her parents' reaction to the conservative pundit's inappropriateness. Watch her spread a message of positive body image now.

Meghan McCain's Best Comebacks to Glenn Beck's Attack on Her Body

Glenn Beck didn't hold back when he cruelly attacked Meghan McCain for sporting a strapless dress in a skin cancer PSA, revealing her shoulders and collarbone.

Glenn Beck didn't hold back when he cruelly attacked Meghan McCain for sporting a strapless dress in a skin cancer PSA, revealing her shoulders and collarbone. Yesterday on his radio show, he exclaimed that he was "getting sick just looking at it," pretended to vomit on air, and asked "has she thought about a burqa, just to be extra safe?" Wasting little time, Meghan took to her Daily Beast column to tell Glenn Beck to shut up about her body. Here are the best lines from her response:

  1. On how he's out of touch: "Clearly you have a problem with me, and possibly women in general, but the truth is, it's 2011 and I heard your show on Fox was canceled. Isn't that an indication that the era of the shock jock pundit is over?"
  2. On his embarrassing sexism: "There really is no need to make something like my participation in a skin cancer PSA into a sexist rant about my weight and physical appearance, because I'm going to let you in on a little secret, Glenn: you are the only one who looks bad in this scenario."
  3. On the impact he could have on his teen daughters: "You're a full-grown man with teenage daughters who are probably dealing with the sexist, body-obsessed media environment that is difficult for all women. Is this really the legacy you want to be leaving for yourself?"
  4. On the body-image double-standard: "As a person who is known for his hot body, you must find it easy to judge the weight fluctuations of others, especially young women. If any of your daughters are ever faced with some kind of criticism of their physical appearance or weight, they should call me, because women's body image is another issue I feel passionate about, and have become accustomed to dealing with and speaking with young women about on my college tours."
  5. On the staleness of his jokes: "Next time, instead of jumping straight to the 'Meghan McCain fat jokes' maybe try out some new material? Because the fat joke thing, it's been done so many times, I know a creative intellect such as yourself can do better than that."
  6. On how he helped her skin-cancer awareness cause anyway: "I am writing to thank you for helping me spread the word about a serious condition."

Meghan McCain Learns Not Everything Stays in Vegas

Meghan McCain is playing defense today.

Meghan McCain is playing defense today. After canceling a speaking engagement to go to Las Vegas last year, today she writes in the Daily Beast it was because her boyfriend had just broken up with her "over a five-line email."

Last September, my boyfriend broke up with me over a five-line email. I had a speaking engagement at Juniata College, but that would have to wait. I canceled the speech and fled to Vegas for a girls' weekend.

So she played hooky? Haven't we all? It's probably a bigger deal to cancel a speech than call in sick for work, but canceling is not a crime. I've gone to work after breakups when I definitely should not have, so if it was canceling versus crying on stage, then she did what she had to do.

However, if you are in the public eye in any way, and your official reason for canceling is "several unforeseen professional responsibilities," don't visit a city synonymous with partying and certainly don't post about it on Twitter.

Do you sympathize, or should she have known better?

Meghan and Cindy McCain Discuss Dirty, Sexy Women in Politics

Meghan McCain has never been shy about her political opinions.

Meghan McCain has never been shy about her political opinions. The 26-year-old thinks the media has an unhealthy obsession with Sarah Palin and that President Obama should stop talking about what's on his iPod. Speaking with her mother, Cindy, at Maria Shriver's Women's Conference, Meghan opened up even more. I attended the Q + A and here's what I found out!

Does being a mother make a person a better political candidate?
Meghan: For my generation, motherhood is a lot less emphasized. I'm 26, and hardly any of my friends are married with kids. It's not a big deal.
Cindy: Motherhood gives you an important perspective. It gives you an opportunity to look at global issues like poverty and hunger in a different way.

Can female icons be smart and sexy?
Meghan: I think women can do anything. No matter what you feel about Sarah Palin, Nancy Pelosi, or Hillary Clinton, looks often come first in a discussion about them. I struggle with this. So, being a woman in any industry you have to think: can I be smart and still like makeup? But women shouldn't have to change themselves.

How can women support each other?
Meghan: We as women need to condemn women who bully other women. Most criticism I've gotten comes from older women. I find it very dated, and very '70s. Women candidates are not taken as seriously because mainstream media is run by men and sexist women.

What do you make of female candidates like Christine O'Donnell?

Meghan McCain on America's Palin Problem

"It seems that the only thing that gets any kind of major media attention when it comes to women in politics is either Sarah Palin or her numerous impersonators.

"It seems that the only thing that gets any kind of major media attention when it comes to women in politics is either Sarah Palin or her numerous impersonators. These are the people that are creating and dominating the political narrative for women in this country."

— Meghan McCain's father may be responsible for bringing Sarah Palin into our lives, but today Meghan writes that the media is to blame for keeping her around. During her book tour, Meghan says every interview was all Sarah all the time, while regular Americans didn't ask her about the former governor.
