Licking

When it comes to odd methods of discipline, Rosario Dawson's mother, Celeste, certainly had some ideas. The actress recently told The New York Times how her mom doled out punishment for misbehavior. She said:

“My mom licked me - that was her punishment. If I was a little uppity or if I didn’t listen or if she wanted to get my attention, she’d lick the side of my face or under my armpit. My mom’s a six-foot-tall amazon and she’d say, ‘You came out of my vagina and I own every part of you,’ and she’d lick me like I was her wee pup and she was a lioness. It was humiliating and really intense. Very primal. It’s not spanking, but it definitely works.

Do you find this method of child rearing odd or inventive?

Someone's been itchin' for a lickin' of ice cream, finally gets his turn for a taste, and pretty much devours the whole darn dilly bar. So much for his dog friend getting a lick in edgewise. (If anyone can tell me what that pervy-sounding German guy is saying, I'd be very grateful.)

Q: My dog is always giving kisses – on my arm or my leg or even my face – he doesn't care. I don't really mind if he does this to me, but it can be embarrassing when company comes and he starts licking them... and they're less than impressed. He has water in his dish so I know he can't be thirsty – what's wrong with him?

A: Chances are your dog is licking you to show affection and for the natural salt on your skin. Unfortunately, since you've made it ok for him to do that to you, you'll have to nip that in the bud first. My best tip is to start practicing when you are home alone with pup. When he starts to lick you, gently hold him out of tongue's reach. Be consistent. It will take some time for him to understand that it's not a game... and to break him of this behavior. He should realize that when he licks you, the playing stops. Then, try to redirect his attention with a fun toy to lick (like a peanut butter-filled Kong) instead.

People may be mindful of what they put in their mouths, but judging from these signs, they're a little more lax with where they put their tongues. We are what we eat, not what we lick— so what's the big deal? Take a look at what folks have been slobbering on lately. It's quite frightening...

Instead of throwing overused pick-up lines at unsuspecting (and otherwise uninterested) women, these dudes throw them long sloppy licks. On the cheek. Along the back of the arm. Even under their feet! A slap in the face usually follows and when it does, these guys get giddy. If this "grab gals by the tongue" technique ever catches on, I'll be knocking on the doors of the nearest nunnery-- lickety-split! (That is, if I didn't knock one of these guys out cold first.)

First there was the hiccuping girl. Then the sneezing girl. Now there's Charles and he has a licking problem. It'd be a major problem if Charles were human, but he's just a dog-- so it's super cute. And super slobbery.
