Zooey Deschanel Talks Life Change in Glamour — "I've Never Been a Five-Year Planner"

Zooey Deschanel graces the cover of Glamour's February issue, which arrives on newsstands Jan.

Zooey Deschanel graces the cover of Glamour's February issue, which arrives on newsstands Jan. 8. Since New Girl debuted in 2011, the show — and Zooey — have racked up multiple Golden Globe and Emmy nominations. On Jan. 13, Zooey will find out if she takes home the Golden Globe for best actress in a TV comedy or musical. Inside the magazine, Zooey discusses her "oddly controversial" TV character, whether she feels pressured to look a certain way, and dating advice. Here's more from Zooey Deschanel in Glamour:

  • On her New Girl character: "I'm just being myself. There is not an ounce of me that believes any of that crap that they say. We can't be feminine and be feminists and be successful?"
  • On feeling pressures to look a certain way: "I don't. But actresses have definitely gotten thinner over the course of my lifetime. Women I admired growing up — Debra Winger, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep — were all beautiful and thin, but not too thin. There are a lot of actresses who are unhealthy-skinny — much, much too skinny. You can't Pilates to that. I'm a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I'd look like them; it's scary. For young girls, what does that say? You need to look this way to be successful? That's not true. You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood. The range of what's acceptable is larger than what people believe."
  • On giving friends dating advice: "It depends on the people. Everyone has to make some compromises . . . I think of my parents, who have been married for 40 years, and my grandparents, who were married for 69 years before my grandfather passed away. My dad is so sweet; he's always like, 'Your mom is a better cook than any restaurant.' And I remember my grandfather looking at my grandmother, saying, 'She's the most beautiful woman in the world.' You can't get any better than that. But we live in a different time. I don't get it when people just have the goal of meeting someone — then it's only about the goal. I've never been a five-year planner."

Selena Gomez looks holiday-ready on the cover of Glamour's December issue, wearing a silky Zac Posen gown and surrounded by balloons. The 20-year-old singer, actress, and philanthropist was named one of Glamour's 2012 Women of the Year, and she sat down with the magazine to talk about her experiences as the youngest-ever US ambassador for UNICEF. She also chatted about her upbringing, best friend Taylor Swift, and, of course, her boyfriend, Justin Bieber. She'll be officially honored at the Women of the Year Awards in NYC on Nov. 12. Here's more from Selena Gomez in Glamour:

  • On her UNICEF charity work: "I went to Ghana with my mom and my stepdad for UNICEF; that entire trip was life-changing. These kids want an education so badly. I mean, I hated homework, and they want it; it's amazing. I also participated in the Global Poverty Project's Live Below the Line campaign, where I lived on $1.50 a day for a week — such a cool experience."
  • On not letting negativity affect her: "If I had let all of the negative stuff affect me, I don't think I would be satisfied with the person I am now. My mom always told me, “Just turn the other cheek and keep moving forward.” That's something I've always done, and now I look back and I have no regrets."
  • On keeping in touch with Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber: "I actually did talk to Taylor last week, and we were like, 'I don't even remember the last time I saw you,' which is really unfortunate. But if it gets too dire, I fly to Taylor, or I fly to Justin."

Julianne Hough Talks Romance With Ryan Seacrest and Being Groped by Tom Cruise in Glamour

Julianne Hough lets her wild side show through in her spread for Glamour's July issue.

Julianne Hough lets her wild side show through in her spread for Glamour's July issue. She sported a bra top and struck a few sultry poses for the shoot. The actress, whose film Rock of Ages hits theaters next weekend, chatted with the glossy about everything from her career to her romance with Ryan Seacrest in the accompanying interview. She even dished on the scene where Tom Cruise feels her up in the new film! Here are some highlights:

  • On being groped by Tom Cruise: "That was my first scene with him! I was nervous as all get-out, but after every take he high-fived me and was like, 'That was awesome.' At one point on the movie, I got really hurt — I tweaked my neck and was in so much pain. And everyone was pressuring me to keep shooting, but Tom came in and said, 'No, this is what insurance is for, Julianne. You have the rest of your career. You need to take care of yourself!' And I thought, Tom Cruise cares about me! Now I can cry."
  • On her boyfriend, Ryan Seacrest: "I had another boyfriend, Chuck Wicks, whom I met on Dancing With the Stars. While we were dating, we went on Ryan’s radio show together. The interview's on YouTube, and I blush when I hear it because Ryan is hitting on me the entire time! At the end, Ryan said something like, 'You guys really have something special!' And I thought to myself, He's so full of s**t right now! When Chuck and I broke up, I wanted to be single. That lasted five months. Then Ryan and I went on a date."
  • On her past lives and present mentality: "I'm a very anxious person. If I'm not working, I go crazy. I've been lucky in my career. But if I lost everything tomorrow — and had no money — I would somehow make it work. I have that survivor mentality because of a lot of stuff that went on in a previous life. I feel like I've had four lives."

Serena Williams Named Woman of the Year

Looks like having a potty mouth won't hurt you too much.

Looks like having a potty mouth won't hurt you too much. Serena Williams is one of 11 outstanding ladies Glamour magazine has chosen for its Women of the Year issue.

Glamour cites Williams's competitive spirit and drive as a testament to her success, even in the face of hardships like the tragic murder of her sister Yetunde and her rise through the rankings after suffering injuries in 2006. This year it all came full circle for Williams when she captured the Wimbledon victory against her sister, Venus — whom she credits as being a major force in motivating her to work the hardest and become the best.

Besides her Wimbledon victory, Williams has 11 Grand Slam titles, two Olympic gold medals, and has earned more prize money than any female athlete in history. But her trophies and bank account aren't the only reason Glamour thinks Williams is tops. Between winning matches, she's managed to start her own clothing line, pen an autobiography, and open a school in Kenya through her Serena Williams Foundation.

Who else did Glamour name as Women of the Year? Some of the other notables Williams holds court with are Michelle Obama, Maria Shriver, Rihanna, and poet Maya Angelou.
