Elizabeth Taylor passed away early this morning at Cedar Sinai Hospital in LA. She was 79 years old. Rising to fame at the age of 12 for her role in 1944's National Velvet, Elizabeth went on to be the superstar of the 1950s and 1960s and she remained an icon all her life.
Her relationship with Eddie Fischer, who died last year, was particularly the stuff of tabloid gold. In 1955, dreamy Eddie Fisher and American sweetheart Debbie Reynolds married, cementing themselves as one of America's golden couples. Three years later, Eddie's friend Mike Todd died in a plane crash, and Eddie got a little too close to Todd's widow Elizabeth Taylor. Debbie found out about the affair when she called her good friend Elizabeth at her hotel room, only to have her husband answer the phone. Debbie and Eddie divorced, as did Elizabeth and Eddie five years after their 1959 wedding and well into Elizabeth's affair with Richard Burton.
The love triangle (love square, maybe?) proved just how profitable the public's insatiable taste for celebrity gossip is. Take a look at some of the best tabloid covers created to follow the Fisher-Reynolds-Taylor-Burton drama.
