Say What? The Trouble With Falling For a President

"And if you're performing, singing, you can't quite let go, [you can't] start dancing like you want, in case the strap on your dress slips.

"And if you're performing, singing, you can't quite let go, [you can't] start dancing like you want, in case the strap on your dress slips. And a country falls. It would be a curse, falling in love with a man who is president, and yet you fall in love, and so there is nothing you can do about it! What a dilemma!"

— Vanessa Paradis says she feels bad for Carla Bruni-Sarkozy because no matter how hard you try, you can't stop love, even if it means falling for a president and never being able to dance until your bra strap shows. I guess dating Johnny Depp doesn't present quite the same dilemma.

An awkward moment we couldn't help but share between French first lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy and a very pregnant Samantha Cameron, wife of Britain's new prime minister, today in London. The Sarkozys visited London to commemorate the 70th anniversary of President Charles de Gaulle's famous wartime broadcast to Nazi-occupied France, which is believed to have played a vital role in winning World War II.

Carla Bruni's Past Life as a Sexy Translator

With a raspy voice and eager attitude, Carla Bruni asks two TV hosts, including Jean-Paul Gaultier, how to say "put your finger in my bottom?"

With a raspy voice and eager attitude, Carla Bruni asks two TV hosts, including Jean-Paul Gaultier, how to say "put your finger in my bottom?" in seven different languages. Luckily the Hot International Love and Sex Guides, which she brought with her on this resurrected episode of Eurotrash, had the answer! Oh la la.

But that was years ago — 1996 to be exact — when Carla was still Italian. Today France's first lady talks passion in much more discreet ways, allegedly dishing sex stories to Michelle Obama behind the scenes. The French government wants to scrub the dirty video off the Internet, but the Internet always wins. So enjoy!

How to Have a Quickie Without Getting Caught

When it comes to quickies, "don't keep the Queen waiting" is probably a good rule to follow.

When it comes to quickies, "don't keep the Queen waiting" is probably a good rule to follow. According to a new book about French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife, Carla Bruni, the first lady kept a senior head of state waiting while she and the prez did the deed.

Later, Bruni supposedly asked Michelle Obama if she had ever found herself in a similar situation: "Bruni wanted to know if, like the Sarkozys, Michelle and the President had ever kept anyone waiting that way," writes Jonathan Alter in The Promise: President Obama, Year One. The Sarkozys are known for their lateness, and the Daily Mail speculates it was an appointment with the Queen that was delayed.

Why Sex Is No Scandal in France — or Is It?

Last week, we told you about a first for France: a prostitute named famous clients in French magazine Paris Match.

Last week, we told you about a first for France: a prostitute named famous clients in French magazine Paris Match. Until then, sex and scandal never went together. There were rumblings, sure, but France remained unfazed.

When the same magazine reported Nicolas Sarkozy's dissolving marriage in 2007, interest swirled, but a press scandal did not storm. A similar story in the US could end a politician's career by the weekend (can't perform the job with such drama), but the only person to lose his job was the editor of Paris Match.

The French, I've always thought, were too liberated, too urbane, and too, well, French to pander and capitulate to the salacious. Sex is no scandal. But it's not because there's no French appetite for smut — the Paris Match issue that reported the Sarkozys' divorce was one of its best-selling issues ever. So what is it? Find out after the jump

Would You Want Your Mate to Have a High-Profile Job?

Having a high-profile mate comes with tons of perks.

Having a high-profile mate comes with tons of perks. For a first lady (or lad), these perks include having a platform to promote chosen causes, associating with powerful and presumably smart people, attending glamourous parties, and feeling like part of history. But with the perks come pressure.

As someone who knows first hand, Carla Bruni says she hopes her husband Nicolas Sarkozy does not seek reelection in 2012. France's first lady explained recently: "As a wife, I don't really want him to. Perhaps I am afraid he will let his health go. Perhaps I wish to live what time we have left in some peace?" That makes total sense to me, although, I couldn't imagine Michelle Obama saying something like that. I have a good feeling we'll see Michelle campaigning for Barack in 2012.

Do You Care About the Love Lives of Public Figures?

If French blogs are to be believed, France's first couple (and one of our faves) is in the midst of not one, mais two affairs.

If French blogs are to be believed, France's first couple (and one of our faves) is in the midst of not one, mais two affairs. Rumor has it that Carla Bruni has fallen for French singer Benjamin Biolay, while President Nicolas Sarkozy has taken up with a right-wing politician/karate expert. But don't expect a reliable news agency to find out if it's true. The legitimate French press is indifferent about illegitimate relationships of politicians, partially due to strict privacy laws, but also thanks to the view that it's not newsworthy. We know the American press loves it some affairs, whether they involve golf stars or presidents. Do you wish the US was blasé like the French, or are you happy to be filled in on the rumors, true or not?

"He asked me to be in his next film. I don’t know for what role, but I said yes. . . . I'm not an actress at all. Maybe I'll be totally horrible but I can't in my life miss an opportunity like this."

— Carla Bruni told France's Canal Plus television in an interview Monday that she agreed to star in Woody Allen's next film, which will probably be set in France. Looks like he finally found a new, above-40 muse!
