Sophisticated Mama: Steal Carla Bruni's Buttoned-Up Maternity Style

Clockwise from top left: Jules and Jim Sophia Maternity Dress ($132), Japanese Weekend White Dress ($74), Strapless Maternity Dress ($129), Rosie Pope Grace Dress ($295), More of Me Oh Baby Bib Dress ($130).
It's probably as strong of a confirmation as we'll ever get from Carla Bruni. The first lady of France attended yesterday's G8 Summit in a loose white shift that simply graced her burgeoning belly — a sharp contrast from the more tailored look she usually wears. The sophisticated style is reminiscent of the more conservative looks other pregnant first ladies have worn through the years, as opposed to the sheer look many celeb mamas are now wearing. With Memorial Day upon us, get set to bring out your own whites. I've rounded up five white frocks to get you started!

>> Carla Bruni has not personally confirmed that she is pregnant — although her father-in-law says she is, and a bump appeared visible when she stepped out last week. Now, Jacques Seguela, the advertising tycoon who brought Bruni and her husband Nicolas Sarkozy together at a dinner party in 2007, has told Belgian newspaper Le Soir: "I have it on good authority that the baby will a boy." Seguela has in the past spoken in public about the couple's private lives, giving a blow-by-blow account of how they met — he described the scene as "unexpected game of seduction between two wild beasts." France's first couple, President Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni, smile as they welcome South Korea's president and first lady to Paris today. Carla made her big-screen debut Wednesday at the Cannes premiere of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. But she decided not to make the trip down south for the festival, citing "personal and professional reasons" and fueling rumors that she's expecting. See more photos of the chic power couples now.

Carla Bruni Reportedly Pregnant

>> Carla Bruni is pregnant with her first child by husband Nicolas Sarkozy, according to reports in the French publications Le Figaro, Le Journal du Dimanche, and Le Parisien. Although the Elysee Palace has not denied or confirmed the claims — a spokesperson instead commented that the subject is a private matter — the French magazine Closer reports that ministers have been told not to share the news, as Bruni is still in the early stages of pregnancy. Bruni, 43, has one previous child, Aurelien, born in 2001 by a previous boyfriend. It was already reported last week that she may skip the Cannes Film Festival premiere of her Woody Allen film Midnight in Paris, for fear of appearing too "bling" in the face of next year's French presidential elections, but a pregnancy could be another reason to avoid the scrum of press. Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Leans "Right" Toward Her Husband

While daughters of conservative politicians speak out about their left leanings, first lady of France Carla Bruni-Sarkozy says she swings right now.

While daughters of conservative politicians speak out about their left leanings, first lady of France Carla Bruni-Sarkozy says she swings right now. That would be unremarkable if her conservative president husband, Nicolas Sarkozy, wasn't gearing up for his 2012 reelection campaign and she was not Carla Bruni.

The model/singer/actress is known for her salacious, or the more euphemistic "bohemian," past, which includes at least one nude photo scandal. But, hey, conservatives get naked, too, right?

Either way, the first lady is seen as a liability to the president's reelection, but I do think she makes a valid point by saying liberals and conservatives are not the same in every country. She said her previous politics were due to the "community of artists" she belonged to in Italy, her native country. "We were left-wing but at that time I voted in Italy. I have never voted for the Left in France and I can tell you, I'm not about to start now."

Do you believe her conservative rebirth or are politics just politics — in every country?

The film spans Gaultier's 30-year career, and Khelfa invited her best friend Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, also a friend of the designer, to interview him. They discussed his commitment to the fight against AIDS, which began after he lost his lover and business partner Francis Menuge in 1990 to the disease. “My favorite piece of clothing is the condom, because it protects from the virus,” he tells Bruni-Sarkozy. Khelfa says she wants to do another designer documentary soon. [WWD]

Do You Believe Michelle Said Being First Lady Is "Hell"?

This month two biographies about Carla Bruni-Sarkozy have been released, and both paint unsavory pictures of the French first lady.

This month two biographies about Carla Bruni-Sarkozy have been released, and both paint unsavory pictures of the French first lady. In Carla and the Ambitious, the supposedly authorized bio that Carla's now distancing herself from, she reportedly told the authors some juicy gossip on Michelle Obama. Like how Michelle replied, "It’s hell. I can’t stand it!" when asked how she liked life as first lady.

The Daily Mail points to a rivalry between the two first ladies, citing the other, unauthorized bio. Its author, Besma Lahouri, says Carla's obsessions have shifted away from rock stars to women, like Michelle, who she perceives as threats.

I have no idea how true that is, but I still don't think Michelle said this. Though she's not on payroll, any context in which the two chat is professional. Michelle is way too on point all the time to say something so obviously disparaging, even if she does hate being first lady. To say this would be totally inconsistent with everything she's ever said and done, which sets my lie detector off.

Do you believe she said it?
