Wheat-Free Pumpkin Dog Biscuits

For a delicious and seasonal doggie birthday treat, Yoo Eatz baked up some wheat-free pumpkin dog biscuits for her lucky pooch.

For a delicious and seasonal doggie birthday treat, Yoo Eatz baked up some wheat-free pumpkin dog biscuits for her lucky pooch.

Disclaimer: Before we go any further, please take note that these are dog biscuits, not people biscuits. No harm will befall you if ingested, but I guarantee that your dog will enjoy them more that you will.

I'm a terrible parent. In fact, it makes me wonder sometimes what will happen when we have human children running around the house rather than the four-legged variety. So here it is: I forgot my dog's birthday. The real date is October 25th, and Lily reached a regal 13 years of age this year on that late Tuesday in October. But here we are one month later, and I have provided no gifts, no birthday cake, only a belated couple of pats on the head and maybe a few more toy tosses.

Of course, the truth is, she hasn't noticed. And she has no idea (nor sympathy) for the guilt that I feel. She's just worried about where her next meal is coming from, which is exactly the sentiment that helped me land on her birthday present.

This Thanksgiving, we're off to my parents' house which now goes by the code name "Disneyland" because the term "Grandma and Grandpa's house" now makes Lily so excited, she leaves puddles on the floor. And since we will be partaking of our own pumpkin-flavored treats, I thought it only fitting that the dog have her own. So I tracked down this wonderful recipe (and cute post) at Simmer Till Done for wheat-free pumpkin dog biscuits that are easy to make and also easy on an aging canine's tummy. This should serve to assuage my guilt, at least until I forget next year. For the recipe, read on.

Reader Recipe: Pumpkin-Peanut Butter Dog Treats

These are similar to the other dog treats I made, but this time I added pureed pumpkin. I meant to add some fresh parsley and mint, but completely forgot—next time, I guess. We’ll just have to continue to deal with Moe’s stinky breath until it’s time to make more treats. Since commercial treats are full of artificial ingredients, preservatives and animal products, we prefer to make his own treats. It’s especially convenient since Moe has been working on his Canine Good Citizen training so that he can be a therapy dog. Lots of training means lots of treats, so I feel better about loading him up with these and not the gross store-bought ones. I also froze the remaining pumpkin puree to use the next time I make treats. Get the recipe at my vegan blog, Epicurean Vegan!

It's my parents' dog Momoko's 5th birthday today. She still looks like a puppy, but she's actually all grown up and even likes to dress up, thanks to the vet who makes sure she gets a new haircut and bandanna every time.

Pet Community: Phoebe Rose Does Austin, Texas

PetSugar Community member Phoebe Rose sure does like to travel! Check out this post about her latest trip:

Austin brings out the Texan in everyone!

Howdee Y'all!  I'm back from a great trip to Austin, Texas.  Austin is my kind of town-the restaurants, the hotels, a gazillion dog parks . . .

Here's the "lowdown" on these outstanding pet friendly hotels:

The Mansion at Judge's Hill is a boutique hotel located in a charming historic section near the University of Texas and in fact the original building was constructed in 1900 as a wedding gift by one of the University Founders.  We stayed in the third floor attic bedroom ( antique furnishings plus every modern convenience).

There are no size or weight restrictions for canine guests, 24 hour room service, complimentary pet goodies, fleece bedding and the staff often bring their pooches to work.  Mom was able to park right in front of the hotel and there is a large grassy front yard and adjacent park.  They even had a current issue of Pet Fido in our room.  Mom said the atmosphere of genteel refinement brought out my best behavior (I guess that didn't include my eating half of her omelet when she wasn't looking).

Cute Cat Pictures

PetSugar Community member putalittlefireonit introduces us to her kitty Gridley, who's new to city life, in the Cat Palace group:

Meet Gridley — a Tabby formerly from Danville, CA, and now a resident of San Francisco! He enjoys watching "Cat TV" from one of three main windows. He loves his cat tree, small mouse-shaped toys and hiding from the noise of the heater. Gridley was named for a city in California, but I have nicknamed him Linus because he sucks on his baby blanket.

Tips For Dealing With an Aggressive Dog?

Readers, kiwitwist needs our help!

Readers, kiwitwist needs our help! She's dealing with an aggressive dog next door:

Hey Everyone,

I could really use some advice. We recently moved to a house with a big piece of property. When we moved in, we knew there was a dog next door but never really saw it (only heard him bark a few times). There is a wood privacy fence between our yard and our neighbour's (with the dog). I don't usually let me dogs hang out outside for any great length of time . . . usually enough to pee and play, unless I am with them.

Well, I came home from work one day and let the girls out to pee and I heard something slam into the fence growling, barking . . . wanting to eat my dogs. I have never in my life seen such aggression. I have watched him slam head first into the fence, growling and barking. My one dog (who is half his size) ran to the fence and barked back. Long story short, I have done pretty good at keeping my dogs in while "the beast" is outside. But we run into a problem when I get off of work . . . the neighbour gets home at the same time. I find myself racing home to get there before they do.

Before I get the guts to ask her if we can work out a schedule, does anyone else have any ideas?? If my dogs would ignore him and continue to do their business, it wouldn't be 'as' big of an issue . . . but they stop everything and bark back. I have to call them into the house and wait until he goes in. Meanwhile they have been crossing their paws for 9 hours!
