Yay or Nay? Albright on Bush's Legacy

Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright recently characterized the Bush Administration as one of America's "worst presidencies." In D.C. promoting her latest book, Albright told a crowd:

“This is a purely practical point here, and I think there’s a lot of work to be done. And I think the judgment is that this is one of the worst presidencies we’ve had and people will wonder what it is that the role of the vice president is.”

Specifically, Albright criticized Bush for not doing enough to take on climate change and energy issues.

I'm not gonna go too much into this, but I will say this... A couple of weeks ago, the incident involving our Naval ships and Iranian speed boats was mentioned, and the two sides of the story came out. Our side, which is rare, because so much is hidden from us, with a voice that sounded very electronic. And the Iranian version, which involved no threat what so ever. Now, I'm not "anti-American," but I find it hard to believe America's account of events. We have lost all credibility with the lies the administration told to get us into Iraq. I know if I have a hard time believing that our side is the real version, then many people that do NOT live in the United States probably feel the same way. With as much debt as we are in, and as thin as our military has been stretched, how can this administration even fathom entering into another war.I won't get into the act of Treason that Dick Cheney and his cronies committed by outing Valerie Plame as an American Spy. Thankfully, she is going forward to civil court with this accusation, so we will eventually see... You know treason is punishable by death?

and p.s. the Iraq war is costing us in dollars (not counting Americans military and Iraqi cvilian deaths) about $1.9 TRILLION. I don't even know what that number means it is so astronomical. Bush has bankrupted us... morally, ethically, financially, internationally, we are mere shadows of what we used to be. bring on a real leader!

Just watched "No End in Sight" last night. Brilliant documentary about how we ended up in Iraq war. Hate to say it, but it was all Bush and his cronies. He is the worst president of modern times. We have been run into the ground. Vote EDWARDS!

Blondie you comment is uneducated why are you in the war right now?? Because your intelligence was wrong and your president pushed for a preemptive strike based on intelligence most of the free world knew was wrong. Not only were you vetoed by the UN but the WMDs are still missing, Hussein wasn't the man who crashed into the twin towers or planned it it was Osama Bin Laden and last time I checked Iraq was not in any way involved. Bush is a war monger now his focus is on Iran and even though his own security confirmed they stopped their nuclear program a few years back he is still convinced they are a threat, does this sound familiar to anyone. If it is not Iran it is North Korea what have they ever done in the world, like really North Korea?? The Middle East which the world's political hot spot has melted down due to massive interference in their politics and the support of Israel in the Israel and Palestinian conflict. Bush sucks and that's the truth, he only got away with it because he was the president of America if he was the president of a third world nation he would be indicted in the ICC for war crimes and branded a heartless dictator.

Oh, Blondie01, where do I even start with your comment? First of all, people really need to stop blaming the media for Bush's bad behavior. As I already mentioned him, it's general knowledge in DC that the press corps is completely smitten with him. Do you even realize how much is NOT reported? Do you know what the Downing Street Memos are? Well you should because they're a shocking indictment against this administration's and Tony Blair's collusion in Iraq, and created HUUUGE scandal in the UK where I was working in Parliament at the time, but it was completely unreported here.Secondly, don't insult our intelligence by saying we only dislike Bush because we're a bunch of brainless zombies jumping on a bandwagon. The man needs culpability, needs to take personal responsibility for his actions and their consequences. Don't throw it back on the American people. Thirdly, it's beyond ridiculous to bring up Monica when discussing policy and economy decision by Clinton. Bring real thought and evidence to the discussion if you want to be taken seriously.Lastly, excusing all his spending by the war. . .do you REALLY want to open that can of worms? That is a MAIN reason people are so upset! He, by your own acknowledgment, is spending billions and billions on a war based on deceit and lazy intelligence-gathering, while meanwhile a BRIDGE in Minneapolis collapses. That sort of thing should never, ever happen in a first world country, but because of the war, our infrastructure is failing, our economy is sagging, and those very dollars are losing their values, making the war even costlier!

I wanted to add something else, I have read comments by those opposed to Bush give examples of why they believe the office has been poorly run, however, I haven't read a comment about what good he has done. That is where his legacy can change, the people who support him being able to show what he did and his successes instead of blaming Clinton or liberals or Congress for all his mistakes. All the blame points to smoke and mirrors to try and hide all that was done wrong, in my opinion.

My feelings about President Bush are none too pretty and I do not wish to get into my deep rooted political debate on his policy or performance. I do believe his legacy will be as the worst president and I am not sure anything can change that. Too many mistakes were made that costs billions of dollars, lost thousands of lives and destroyed our nation's relationship with the rest of the world. However, LBJ is one of my favorite political figures and he doesn't have the best legacy but history is beginning to look more favorably on his presidency, maybe Bush will have the same result but I doubt it.

They are just doing their job, and doing it very well. They trust their commander-in-chief, our President, with their LIVES, and count on him to make the right decision. While I agree Saddam was a terrible man, I do NOT think invading Iraq while leaving Afghanistan, was the right choice. Not at all. We should have finished the job there before moving into Iraq. Now there is a Taliban resurgence in Afghanistan, Osama is nowhere to be found, and we're all tied up in Iraq."FB1977--I agree and I have friends over in Iraq right now (one on his THIRD deployment who just got married this summer). Bush has tanked our country. I'm an independent, and proud of it. I don't agree with some aspects of the guy, but I think the only presidential candidate that can actually begin to fix the country is Ron Paul. Politics is such a special-interest/money game. I hate it, and the American people suffer from it.

All the haters need to find out why they joined the bandwagon of bush haters in the first place. Everyone loves to hate someone, but ask yourself, why? Yes, pick out the bad, but there is also good (as all media loves to shun). Regarding to earlier comments, Bill Clinton MOST definitely left Bush a lot of baggage. And OF COURSE Bush is spending more now...HELLO we are in a war people. Clinton wasn't in a war, he was too busy with Monica (but I digress...). Bush has possibly not made all the best decisions, but he has still kept our nation safe since 9/11 (which in fact took place less than a year after Bush took office...thanks again Clinton).

McPro 26, I completely disagree with your conclusion. Yes, it's true that there are always antagonists to current presidential administrations (in politics people will always disagree), but I DON'T think it's pointless to debate, and I think healthy debate is essential in democracy. People do change their minds. That's why Bush went from a large approval rating to a large disapproval rating. Also, we who have lived this administration reserve every right to judge it for its actions; they ARE accountable to the American people (or at least, should be!). And I think that saying "history will vindicate us" is patronizing (we simple constituents cannot understand the scope and genius of their vision), cowardly, and an excuse.

Wow! I am so not going to argue with anyone but some of our great President while they were president had people saying that their Presidency will be the worst in history. There were people saying that Lincoln would go down as the worst president in history because he did not keep this country together. They said he let the country go to war whether it is right or wrong now he was seen as an awful president for a while because of the war. People did not like Johnson when he was president. I really could go on about what the media and others said about certain presidents so it really does not matter what people say now because some people will say yes and repeat what democrats always say and some will say no and repeat what republicans say. Trust me you can argue until your fingers fall off but noone will change their minds because some look at the world different than others!
