Having a high-profile mate comes with tons of perks. For a first lady (or lad), these perks include having a platform to promote chosen causes, associating with powerful and presumably smart people, attending glamourous parties, and feeling like part of history. But with the perks come pressure.
As someone who knows first hand, Carla Bruni says she hopes her husband Nicolas Sarkozy does not seek reelection in 2012. France's first lady explained recently: "As a wife, I don't really want him to. Perhaps I am afraid he will let his health go. Perhaps I wish to live what time we have left in some peace?" That makes total sense to me, although, I couldn't imagine Michelle Obama saying something like that. I have a good feeling we'll see Michelle campaigning for Barack in 2012.
