If you caught the Today show this morning, you probably saw every soon-to-be bride on a budget in New York City bombard Filene's Basement. Women were lined up since the early morning hours to get their hands on discounted, nonrefundable bridal gowns. And the women came prepared — they brought team members, walkie-talkies and whistles, and plans to divide and conquer the room of brand new gowns to get the right dress in the right size.
In this economy, bargain shopping is a must, but racing to snatch the gown of your dreams almost takes the excitement out of it. Since I'm not in the market for a wedding dress, I don't know how to answer this one. So tell me ladies, would you go through the trouble to get your dress on sale? Or would you rather pay a little more to have a relaxing, memorable experience?

I'd do it for another person but me personally no. I want to take my time and find the PERFECT dress instead of finding something I "like" but then having to alter the crap out of it. No thanks...
1Haha, I watched that on tv before. It looks really fun to me! I would want to do it just for the experience!!!! But if I didn't find a dress I loved there, I wouldn't feel obligated to buy it, I would just keep looking other places. But it would still be fun to go to that!!!!!
2I agree with Murinea
I know people hate the stampedes but I think
the hunt is super fun! Besides, with great deals to be had it should be worth a try. But I'm not gonna get super upset or rip off another woman's head for her dress if I don't find the
perfect one.
3I've heard those women can be vicious! Elbows into your ribcage, tripping, pushing, trampling? I'm not that desparate. Besides I would like to look around and see what I like, not grab 10 dresses and run into a corner while my friends defend me and my bounty.
4I know most women know what they want a head of time (plus things like sizes) but still, I don't know. It just seems when there are good deals to be found (really good from what I hear)then people can act really out of character (at least I hope thats not what they are like in real life).
not just no but hell no! i need my sleep..ill pay a few hundred more for my idea of the perfect dress, not the perfect bargain.
5hahaah this is awesome... i would definetly do it, just to say i did it.
My favorite part is the girl in the brown jacket who just stood there screaming after they said GO!
6ahahaha women are so funny sometimes
I agree with Smacks83 and Lily Inferno.
7I want my dress to be flawless, and alot of thought put into it. I have also considered not even buying one for the big day, but designing it myself and having it hand made just for me.
Absolutely not. And I really could careless about their "stampede". Today shows it every year for some reason I have yet to figure out.
8No. Way. I would never *ever* have gone to such lengths for such a silly thing. I considered purchasing mine online from TARGET (oh yeah, they carry bridal wear on their website, check it) for $120, but eventually decided I liked another dress better elsewhere (still for less than $300).
9No - I'd rather get one secondhand or borrow one than deal with this - events like this terrify me. Thankfully I have a vintage gown waiting for me, but even if I didn't I'd never do this.
10It's all a little insane! A wedding is stressful enough why throw that added stress into it. I tried all these fancy dresses on for my wedding thinking I knew what i wanted by looking at magazines and I finally found something that was more comfortable that I could look good on my day and enjoy myself and it was great because not only did I do that I only paid $200 for the dress!
11Hell no. In that stampede, the dress you're getting for free will certainly get ripped -- and wedding dresses are really expensive to alter. You'll just end up paying for it in alterations, fixing tears, and any tailoring you have done to make it more your own style. You can find plenty of dresses without the designer price tag (sample sales that are a little less hectic, second-hand sale online, or just off the rack).
I'd rather NOT be a screaming/rampaging bride, thank you very much.
12I took awhile to select mine, and it showed that I bought the one I really loved. I don't want to be rushed and not be able to enjoy it.
It's your wedding. ENJOY shopping for the dress, take your time, fuss over details, whatnot.
13GIRLS!!!! I have worked at these events before!!!!!!!!
The trick is to go at 10 or 11 am. When the doors open, every gown is ripped off the racks in under a minute. But once people start trying them on and trading for styles/sizes they want/need, things really calm down, and employees start putting dresses back on the racks. Two hours into it, brides have either found their dress, or haven't, and things are relatively normal. Plus, for every group of seven women there is usually only one bride -- there are PLENTY of dresses left after the initial mania. If you're looking for a deal, take one other person with you later in the day to browse, because there are really some gorgeous things at INSANE prices. My thought is that if my dream dress was there at 8 am and not 11 am, then the woman who got it earned it.
14Never in a million years. I don't want to wear a traditional white dress on my wedding day - I want it to be one-of-a-kind and interesting and colorful, so it would be pointless for me to go to something like this, let alone any bridal store.
15The dress was the funnest part of planning my wedding. Even though the dress took up a huge chunk of our budget, we cut back in other areas to get the one I wanted. I am still happy with it. I went to one of those bridal dress outlets and there isn't really any service and no guarantees.
16I don't think I can handle this. I'm a dedicated 4am Black Friday-er, and this terrifies me.
Thankfully, my uncle is a partner for Mon Cheri Bridals, which carries about six different bridal designers and several more of bridesmaids dresses/evening gowns, so not only will I get first choice of whatever I want, I will get it for dirt cheap. (My $950 prom dress cost me $92!!!)
17I always thought this could be so fun! Especially for someone who's on a tight wedding budget. But I didn't do it when I got married...maybe one of my friends will someday!
18Imagine how many women might have stepped or even ripped your dream dress. They'll need to dry clean the dress as soon as you take it home.
19No way.
20That would stress me out!
Easy - I wouldn't wear one of those things, so noperz!
21I live in NY and one of my co-workers is getting married next year and she went to this. She didn't go in the morning when all the craziness was going on, instead she waited to go in the afternoon after work. Apparently they have a lot of dresses and not that many brides show up and no one really buys more than 1 dress. So if you go later when the madness is over you still have a chance to find something nice.
Personally, I would probably go just for fun but I don't think I would go with a mission of I have to find my dress here.
22I don't plan on buying my dress. Why would I? So my daughter could wear it? What if she isn't a dress size US4 like me? How bad would she feel THEN?
I'll hire my dress and stay away from crazy events like this. I don't even think they have them in the UK!!
23I would love to go to one of these .... even though I don't plan on wearing a white gown if I get married. I would definitely help a friend if they decided to do this.
24Way too stressful!
25Nooo way. I don't even like shopping when it's crowded, much less an event like this! This reminds me of the Friends episode when Monica wanted to find her dress at an event like this and gave Phoebe and Rachel whistles to blow on... and Rachel hid in the racks freaking out. Hahaha.
26That scares me
27I wouldn't try doing it either. Planning the wedding is already stressful as it is.
28i went to this even in boston. i knew i was going alone and that i had no interest in the stampede. so i went at around 10am. there were still a lot of rude women in the house, but most women there don't even like the same types of dresses. the most interesting thing about it is that you can try on so many dresses that you realize what you thought was your perfect style might not be. i ended up getting a lovely gown for $249... retailed for around $1800. several women told me they tried on the same dress after they saw me in it, because it looked so nice. but everything looks different on different women. a few women who worked there came over to me to tell me that the dress looked great on me, and that they noticed me in it from across the room. what i mean to say is... i found the perfect dress after kind of roaming around for a few hours. just don't go first thing in the morning and it's really not that bad. but yes, you will need to get it dry cleaned.
