As we all know, pornographic magazines, movies and websites cater, for the most part, to men. We hear all the time that men are visual creatures, while women are romance junkies. (Someone once argued that romance novels were a woman's pornography.) Although women aren't quite as easily stimulated by visual material as men, some women do like porn — not all of it soft core. But no mainstream nudie mag, comparable to Playboy, exists for women.
Filament, an erotic magazine for women launching this month, bills itself as "a new concept in magazines for women: intelligence, inspiration and images of men designed for the female gaze." Sorry, Filament, this doesn't sound promising to me. To find out why, read more
First off, there's something too fussy about it. The "female gaze" is an offshoot of "the male gaze," a feminist film theory term that describes the way in which Hollywood films make the male protagonist the subject of most films, mainly through making women the object of their gaze. It also describes the general culture of men's objectification of women. The idea of creating a magazine that will turn women on built on this overly theoretical premise already has my libido wilting. And according to one reviewer, the images of the men in odd poses are anything but sexy.
I wonder if the reason there aren't any mainstream erotic magazines for women is mostly because no one's hit on the right formula. (Playgirl, which was around for 35 years, doesn't count according to some because it was really for gay men.) I once bought the short-lived, straight-outta-Brooklyn porno mag for women Sweet Action, filled with naked pics of skinny, tattooed hipster boys. It was interesting, and I loved the photography, but it didn't do anything for me.
Would you ever buy a magazine with erotic or pornographic photos of men? If so, what, ideally, would the men and the images look like?

Jil Sander
I bought a copy of Playgirl when I turned 18, just to say that I had. It was NOT sexy. Honestly, I don't find naked men that much of a turn on in and of themselves.
1The reason there hasn't been a magazine like that for women is because women and men are different. Men like naked images that are right in front of them while women like to imagine things like romance and mood and sexiness. That's why romance novels are written for women.
2tlsgirl - I agree! Pictures of naked men do not turn me on. If you look at it from an aesthetic point of view, the male body is not that pretty. Ha!
3I checked out Playgirl once..yea feh. Nothing spectacular. Im not sure women need this kind of magazine. But then again maybe some do? I dunno
4There's enough evidence to say that many women aren't turned on by visual images ALONE [and I mean the images by themselves, that's why this is capitalized]. Men, on the other hand, really only need a view - that's why there's been so much success with selling female nudity.
The male form has never been marketed as "sexy", but rather "powerful". That evokes a different kind of response that probably wouldn't be profitable for a male nude magazine.
I don't know what the formula is - I mean, looking at pictures of penises really doesn't do much for me, neither does them being in odd positions. I think maybe a thoughtful/artistic nude picture with a story about the guy and why he's hot might do the trick. Or have sex toy giveaways!
[ j/k on the sex toys, but it's something! I'd read that magazine!]
5I don't know. Sometimes a naked dude can be really erotic. Those underwear ads with David Beckham get my blood pumping every time I see them. But, yeah - generally speaking it does nothing for me. I wouldn't buy this either.
6Hmm.. I agree to a point with margokhal. Maybe if Playgirl did photos that displayed a powerful-slant as opposed to "Check it out, this is my cock", it would've been more of a hit with women. Personally, I love porn, and I think if there's a market for porn with a focus on pleasing women as opposed to things men want to see (anal, violent thrusting, etc.) it would be more successful in my demographic.
7I totally agree with mondaymoos about the porn thing. I think part of the problem with pictures is sometimes the guys in mags like Playgirls are not really that attractive. For me to get turned on by a picture, it's important for the guy to have a hot body AND a cute face
8that guy with the tats in the picture is pretty hot, i wouldn't mind seeing nude pics.
9magazines never really show the type of guy that turns me on. i love naked guys but it always seems geared to gay men when you see them posing in a magazine.besides why look at a magazine when i can (pardon the pun) look at the real thing?
10If it was artistic and not uber-porny then I'd flip through it but I hardly buy magazines. I feel they are a waste.
11Why buy a magazine when I can get it online for free?
No, the only nude guy I'm really interested in is my own.
Actually, I find people in general to be more attractive clothed. For example, I'd rather see a woman in cute lingerie than in the buff. Even those David Beckham ads leave a little something to the imagination
12For me there are certain men that I would love to see naked (from celebrities to one of my co-workers
), but just looking at random guys probably wouldn't do much for me.
13I don't watch porn, except for once or twice with the boyfriend to giggle at it's ridiculousness (yeah, we've both got the mentality of 13 year olds, lol!). I always thought it would be more frustrating than exciting - oooh, I can't get laid, so let's watch other people do what I wish I was doing!
Where the hell is the pleasure in that?!
(PS - I typed this THREE TIMES and the first two, it took me to a second reply page instead of posting my post, and I had to type it all over. Very annoying - what's up with that, Tres?)
14I personally don't see the appeal of male nudity. It's quite unattractive actually.
15why not, I must say sometimes I do not understand, why they say that only men are visual lovers, I am definetely too... But I also have a specific taste and rather erotic photos than porn turnes me on, though porn is a relative term anyway...
16i agree with pistil and margokhal i am much more turned on by women and men in lingerie than a man naked. I think its because to a certain degree woman want men to view them as sexy. Also I think that a guy in a porno looking powerful would be way more of a turn on than a man just standing there. why do you think men like dominatrix type stuff? its the same for woman.
17I'm with xxstardust - what's up the commenting this morning? It's messed up on all the sites.
18Tlsgirl, I'm glad I was not the only one who noticed that. I click on "post" then instead of seeing my comment posted, I'm redirected to a smaller box where I must type the same thing again.
I'm copying the comments after writing them because I know they won't be posted the first time.
19Now to answer the question...being the very curious person I am, I've already bought a magazine with pictures of naked men.
Most of these magazines (if not all of them) are for gay men, which is fine by me, but the guys featured on the pages are too ripped, muscly and waxed, definitely not my type.
I like male nudity, but I prefer seeing it in movies. It's great when I get to see extremely hot men like Viggo Mortense and Thomas Jane's full frontal nudity -- and I'm not going to lie: it turns me on.
20Eve - what movie is Viggo Mortensen fully naked in? Because I will seriously head to blockbuster *right now*. That man is GORGEOUS!
21Xxstardust, he's been naked in many movies actually and here's a quick list (the ones I'm remembering right now):
The Reflecting Skin (1990, fully naked I can't remember if there was frontal nudity -- a weird but quite interesting film though);
The Indian Runner (1991 -- full frontal, he's sporting fake tattoos but still...full frontal, baby);
A Walk on the Moon (1999 -- not sure if there's a full frontal but there's a scene featuring him and Diane Lane having passionate sex under a waterfall);
Aaaaaaand Eastern Promises, which is by far the most courageous scene I've ever seen any (serious) actor perform. It's not a sexy scene, it's rather disgusting since he's fighting for his life, but it's a 5 minutes long scene where you can see him naked from every possible angle.
22I wouldn't buy that kind of magazine. for me, the female body is much more pleasing to look at.
23Nice! I'm off tomorrow so it might have to be a movie day. =]
For the record, I do think Viggo Mortensen is a phenomenal actor and don't just value him for his gorgeous body - but when those movies came out I was only like ten, which is why I've yet to see them! Thanks for the list =]
24eveday, on behalf of Viggo fans everywhere, I thank you for the comprehensive "when Viggo is naked" llist! Eastern Promises was amazing, as was that scene!
25Eveday, you are a reader after my own heart ... and my man, but I'll forgive you. A Walk on the Moon is not to be missed, and let's also not forget Viggo's steamy scenes in A History of Violence.
26Hey ladies, sorry for the inconvenience with the commenting issue this morning but all should be good now. Please ping me if you are still encountering any problems. Thanks!
27last kind of men i want to see naked are skinny hipster men.
28Xxstardust, Trèssugar and Nancita...you're all welcome!
You see...I'm not selfish, I
like sharing the hotness
And Xxstardust, I also think he's an amazing actor -- if I didn't, I don't think I would have paid attention to him anyway. I've always rooted for him to have his talent recognized. But the subject here is naked men so I listed those where he's actually fully naked.
Nancita, A Walk on the Moon is really good...and Liev Schreiber also stars in it -- I don't know what I'd do if I was in the same situation as Diane Lane in that film, seriously. A History of Violence has some very sexy scenes (but he isn't completely naked -- though we can see his tooshie during that stairs scene).
29I'm more attracted to a guy's behavior than his looks. Of course there is a bottom line for physical attractiveness, but if I meet the guy and he's pretty but he's a douche (or his character is a douche, lol) , that instantly douses whatever attraction I might have had for him. I also find guys that are too pretty repulsive, because that usually means they are completely full of themselves.
I do have to admit I can appreciate a sculpted torso and piercing eyes as much as the next girl though. I fell hard for Elijah Wood when LOTR was out just based on his eyes! Though Viggo as Aragorn was completely scrumptious as well.
30Women have been conditioned to not like the male body over thousands of years. Women's hormonal levels have always been of concern to men.
I love the male body. Not all photos turn me on because sometimes men just look funny in the poses they strike. Also big undies just don't cut it for me. However full nude shots of a good looking hunk - nothing better and yes it turns me on.
When women mature they're supposed to go off sex, but what have they got to titillate them - ugly, fat, old, saggy husbands and very few examples of titillation. While older men are turned on by younger women who love to show off their bodies. Of course their libido doesn't change, so with wives who have been turned off sex by the lack of titillation, they turn to masturbation.
It's a funny world!
Now, what was the name of that mag?
31I really do think there should be magazines equivelant to Nuts, Zoo and FHM for women!! Just to give men a little taste of their medicine!! It can get quite annoying when sitting with your partner and he is making comments about all of the pics in theses magazines..... it can make me feel uncomfortable and a bit insecure!! The funny thing is though he will do this infront of me and i will just grin and bare it.,.... however as soon as Calvin from Hollyoaks appears with his six pack out... the TV goes OFF or the channel changes for a min or two!! I really would love to have the opportunity to buy a magazine full of six packs and read it infront of him!!!! Anybody else feel the same?!!!
32The male body IS attractive, and can be a turn on to women when done RIGHT! It irks me when women shy away from being turned on by men... come on ladies! What are you so afraid of? I love the idea of this magazine, but wish they would have some more variety. Too often, the attempts to show male nudity go too far in one extreme or the other, showing the uber-muscled, long-haired Fabio (blech), or the ultra skinny hipster guy more geared to gay men, here.
The media industry should turn to male underwear ads to figure it out! The photo ads (and photo shoots for male celebrities) in my bf's GQ are often far hotter than anything I can find targeted at women. Think about the David Beckham ad, then think about seeing more of that. YUM!
In addition, old Playgirls didn't always show men aroused. What's the fun in that? Women are turned on by displays of arousal, the turn on being that the woman can imagine herself as the source of the man's desire. If they are going to show male nudity, the men need to be visibly turned on for it to be appealing to women.
