Would You Consider Freezing Your Eggs?

While some of us don’t want children ever, others of us just don’t want children right now, but maybe later. However, now that many women are focused on their careers, education, travel destinations, and just living the single life, that “later” can end up further and further away. Thus, the timer to have children starts to become more about biology and less about societal pressures. Sure, there are women having children well into their 50s, but that’s not a reality for everyone, furthermore, you won’t know until you try — and by then it might be too late. So, would you consider freezing your eggs to plan for children later on down the road?

LOL. I understand where you're coming from, Emma. Personally, I think having children is a (natural) narcissistic tendency.

i don't think i would. i know i don't want kids right now (i'm 24) but me and the boy do plan to start having children by the time we're 30. so i don't really need to think about whether i would or not. but i guess if i was someone who was planning on having children sometime after 40, i probably would look into it.

I know I may sound harsh...but I really don't get the incessant need the great majority of the population has to reproduce. Various issues such as overpopulation and the environment come to mind when I read about the topic. Sometimes I wonder if it is somewhat selfish and egocentric wanting to bring children into the world, something I realize sounds quite paradoxical in of itself. While I'm in no position to judge or criticize anyone who goes at great lengths to achieve their reproductive purposes, I do realize that I don't want to bring children into what a consider an already quite hectic world, and if I do want to fulfill a role as a parent I would do it in the form of adoption.

No. We don't want kids, but if we did and had fertility problems, we'd adopt.

awwww, allourregrets. But you'll find someone that's perfect for you. Promise. I also found out my eggs were useless, so no; I wouldn't save them. But if things were different and I wasn't quite ready, I'd do that. Absolutely.

Nope. We're child-free by choice, but if we ever decide to raise children, we would adopt. Speaking for myself, I can love any child, not just my own.

I could not imagine waiting that long to have children, but if I felt I had to wait, then yes I would consider freezing them.

Blingbling....I am with you. I am 30 maried at 27...I am focusing on my career right now...GRADUATE SCHOOL. My husband is in the military ..he is gone alot. I wasnt sure in my 20's either...but now I am 30 and still have a few more items on my list. People constantly badger us..."what are you waiting on??!" And then my sister who is 33 is having problems conceiving..she was told as well her eggs are of "poor quality". If she'd known then what she knows now..then yes...freezing would defintely be an idea!

As someone who found out at 33 that my eggs were "poor quality" - it would have been nice to have some of MY eggs on ice, instead of dealing with 5 years of infertility treatments. But how did I know that I'd have such problems? All I knew was that in my 20s, I wasn't sure if I wanted kids or not, and besides, I was single. Now if I want to have a child I either have to adopt or use a donor egg. But even if I'd thought about it in my 20s, finances would have prohibited it. It costs thousands of dollars, not covered by insurance, to do the retrieval process. So yeah, given my current circumstance, I'm all for it. But for most women, you don't know how your life will unfold and if you did, you couldn't afford it.

No, but then again I've always wanted to adopt so if I couldn't have them on my own I'd go straight to that. Plus, I don't think I want to have kids if I'm over 35ish. Nothing against people who do, I just don't picture myself dealing with them past a certain age.

I'd consider freezing my eggs. I want to be able to have kids in the future and I don't know if I'll be sick with cancer or if something health debilitating disease.

I'd guess I'd think about it - for me it's not so much I'd want to put my career first as I don't want kids at all right now, but I know that will probably change. I'd have to know a lot more about the procedure and the costs, and it's not like in vitro is a really easy and cheap process itself!
