Who's Watching President Obama's Press Conference?

Back in February, President Obama held a pretty successful press conference with the hopes of selling his giant stimulus package to the American people. Tonight, he's back for round two with the public. At 8 p.m. (EDT), the prime-time president will field questions from the press and give American viewers a progress report on economy. We'll be grading his answers right here!

grandpa.. we have the cleanest water and the healthiest air quality.. yet we lag behind 41 other countries in life expectancy and rank only 29th in infant mortality rates.. most the countries that are beating us in this regard have universal heath care. Even France who have a higher amount of people who smoke, drink and eat rich foods are healthier and live longer than Americans. Doctors in universal health care systems are rewarded for their patients health and preventive care is a high priority and tend to have fewer prescriptions as well and when they do have a prescription that is needed it cost less than $10 or is free if you are a senior citizen or pregnant or a child. And if you are sick.. their doctors still make house calls. Have a child and you can have an extended leave of absence (your husband can take off two weeks as well) and nanny subsidies. I have had every health care coverage imaginable from full coverage with a large company where my son's prenatal care and birth in a private birthing suite in California cost me $12 to independent coverage where my second child's prenatal care and birth came to $23,000 out of my pocket in South Carolina. And I have gone without coverage and not gone to the doctor when I desperately needed medical care. So I have seen several sides of the issue and I am willing to pay additional taxes both personally and through my small business if it could provide a universal system here in the US. But I doubt I will see it happen in my lifetime since our system is based on health insurance company and Pharmaceutical company greed.. good luck taking that cash cow away from them. And if everyone is so afraid of socialism.. lets take away the postal service, libraries, fire departments, public school systems, social security, medicaid and medicare. You can't complain about one without then spotlighting the other "socialist" systems we already have in place.

Then Laine, you've made your decisions about which gambles with your grandchildrens' future you approve. One war never totally negates the possibility of another though, so you might want to keep your fingers crossed too.

I wass unaware of any meaningful objection to going into Afghanistan. As a matter of fact the Democrats made a point of chiding Bush for taking his eye off the ball in Afghanistan. Was there a Democrat candidate that opposed the Afghan war in the democrat primaries? I mean someone that took a state, or even picked up delegates. The current POTUS, made a major issue of how he was going to go in to Afghanistan, and track down Osama bin Laden, even if it meant going into Pakistan unilateral.

Afghanistan. Those ill-advised policies would have continued had Obama not won. The Republicans had already run up a more than trillion dollar deficit by election day - it would have gone higher with them as well, only the money wouldn't be spent on health care or rebuilding roads, etc.

What two wars is that. I know you refer to Iraq, as one, but confused as to #2. Is there an industrialised nation on earth that has cleaner water and air then we do? You probably do not know what got me on Sugar in the first place. It was a debate on Republican tax policies, and how I thought they were ill advised. If you look back on conservative suger, at the time I first joined, you should find that debate.

People who keep saying 'we're gambling with our grandchildren's futures' always seem to be the same people who didn't consider that an obstacle to launching two wars in the world's most volatile region while cutting taxes at home or don't worry about polluting the world those same grandchildren will inherit. We ARE gambling their futures with most of the decisions we make - so we need to think our actions through, and work as hard as we can to make them work properly.

Steph, we are gambling with our children and grand children's money and future standard of living, do we have that right? We are already saddling them with unfunded mandates in both Social Security and Medicare. We should not "speculate" with our children's future well being and standard of living.

Who knows if we'll get it right - but just because you think they haven't doesn't mean we shouldn't try. It's not health care that brought on the current crisis.

I guess because of my European background, I spend more time reading about the EU, and in particular the economies, and politics of the British isles. I look at Ireland , and I look at Great Britain, and I look at what POTUS is planning, and I see no good outcome. I am sorry.

They're no better off because all kinds of issues that have nothing to do with health care - just because the guy down the street has a house, job, family that are similar to yours doesn't mean you should measure your actions by his.

Well, if Europe is no better off then us with nationalized health care why spend the 800+ billion dollars POTUS proposes we spend as a "downpayment"?

Saying we won't have 'real' prosperity unless we get health care costs under control IS NOT the same as saying that getting health care costs under control will protect us from ever having another economic crisis.

Mr. President,you said that unless we get health care costs under control we will never have “real” prosperity, but the countries that have already “tackled” this problem in the past were not spared their own economic meltdowns look at Europe, they have nationalized health care already, and have had it for awhile , why are they experiencing the same economic crisis we are?

I don't think the President convinced any new people that his Budget proposal is fiscally sound. How can you tell us you are reducing health costs when you propose an increase of 600+ BILLION dollars in health care.
