When Do You Get a Sibling's Significant Other a Gift?

We thought we asked about everyone you could possibly buy a gift for, but an OnSugar user has a new gift-giving dilemma in Group Therapy. At what point do you give a sibling's significant other a gift? Do you wait until they're living together, engaged, or married? Or is a relationship enough? And if one gets a present, should they all?

This is the 2nd Christmas that my sister and her boyfriend will be together so I decided to buy them a couples gift instead of getting two separate ones. If they are in a committed relationship then I think that a couples gift is fine. ex...i got them a popcorn tub and filled it with microwave popcorn, movie size candy, two bottles of jones soda, and a few movies. Its cheap, fun, and makes a great date!

Marriage. But, I normally don't buy gifts for extended family.

I agree with above - it depends on the relationship. However, I do think after marriage a gift would be a nice gesture.

I agree with the above post. It depends on the relationship I have with them.With my brothers girlfriend (who I can't stand), I'd get her something if they were married but nothing now. My sisters boyfriend I buy stuff for every Christmas because he's like a brother to me.

With my husbands brothers, I got a gift for their partner when I had a relationship with them. That was pretty easy. One girl was only around very briefly, but I really got along with her, so I got her a gift that Christmas. When he was back with his ex (current wife), it was something like 3 yeas before I got her something. In those years we got the 2 of them some nice wine. Like a tonken gift. I hate feeling like I need to get someone something when there's no real connection. Feels fake and like I'm sucking up or something:

my family doesn't buy gifts for anyone but the kids for the holidays, and i really prefer it this way. I hate feeling obligated to find some meaningless gift to give someone. My last job my coworkers were nuts about it and it was annoying trying to find something relatively cheap and work related for them. I much prefer fun family and close friend celebrations for the holidays with food and board games.

I'd always get my sister's boyfriends something. Even if she just met him the week before. Of course then it won't be big, or very meaningful, but I think it's very nice, and I know I would certainly appreciate it if my partner's family included me.
