At the beginning of this year many considered John McCain's campaign a nonstarter, especially after he placed fourth in Iowa. But after winning the New Hampshire primary, the original maverick became the comeback kid, eventually accepting his party's nomination in Minnesota. Of course some of the best McCain moments happened before and after his official nomination!
During the Summer McCain stole some of the celebrity-power from Obama by nominating Sarah Palin as his VP, the night after his opponent's rock-star acceptance speech. The Palin pick gave McCain a boost in the polls, but after that faded away McCain took another shot at maverick leadership: he suspended his campaign to return to Washington and address the economic crisis.
In the end, even an attempt to save the US economy didn't convince voters, and on Nov. 4 McCain delivered a graceful concession speech. But McCain doesn't have to say: "I ran for President and all I got was this stinkin' Palin 2012 T-shirt" — during the campaign a Marine Sergeant gave McCain his Purple Heart as a sign of support.

Honestly, everything before 2007. I used to really like McCain, as GOP guys go. This election just reminded me of what a big fat old machine this US political process is, bound and set in stone to turn the US population into warring camps of hounds, with the traditional bits of rhetoric and b.s. dangled in front of their noses like proverbial Pavlovian treats.
There are no "mavericks" at that level. There is "maverick essence", "maverick wrapping", for the sake of branding and persona. But in reality, most of his maverick qualities were - by necessity - thrown out the window for a national level election.
1Real mavericks....wouldn't stand for it. Then again, its very hard to be elected on a platform of "not like the other guys", just ask a libertarian.
Definitely his concession speech. That's about it.
2Let's see, there was an opportunity to comment on a favorite Bush, McCain, and Palin moment all of which were commented about in a negative way. What about a favorite Obama or Biden moment? Things seem a little one sided here! I think I'll just observe for awhile. Thanks!
3whats so negative about the poll above?
I picked the speech he made at election night. Not because he didnt win but because I think he spoke very well that night, even after the crowd boo'ed O, he kept his cool.
4Ohh gosh, I can't pick just one; however, thanks for posting such a great picture-I really like that one.
5I agee with momma. He showed a classiness that his supporters didn't at the concession.
6Probably the concession speech.
7don't they have tons of money for teeth cleaning/whitening? or is it just the picture??
I really liked his concession speech. it would've broken my heart had I not been thrilled about obama winning.
8The wave after the concession speech for certain.
9where are u mr.puddles?
hmm i liked his concession speech
10I loved McCain's spirit fingers after one of the debates. But I'll settle for his concession speech, reminded me of the McCain I used to love.
11His concession speech, it was very dignified, unlike the audience.
12Good lord. The audience crap again. There is booing at every concession speech. Even sixth grade student council. Is this the first election you people have ever paid attention to?
13Eh, some people are still holding onto something from the election, whether it be the audience booing or the whole "Obama's not really legally qualified to be president". I personally can't be bothered with either of those two examples, but that's just my opinion.
14My favorite McCain moment? You'll never guess! "That one."
15Yeah, because no one in the democratic party has ever done anything classless (2000, Al Gore)...
16The suspending the campaign was a fun, innovative little twist, I enjoyed that a lot - gave us something to talk about...but I voted for the speech, because it was a damn good one and the fact that he refused to let Sarah Palin deliver one as well was a great move too.
17I definitely didn't have a favorite moment watching the guy shred every bit of integrity he had to try and get elected - for me, a good concession speech can't make up for a campaign that labeled his opponent a terrorist and a socialist.
18I'm with most of ya...I liked the concession speech.
19I'm not saying this because he lost, but his concession speech was the most graceful and president-like speech I heard from his entire campaign.
20Jessie, you're not the only one saying that. My dad, who voted McCain, was watching that speech and he made the same comment. He said that if McCain had acted like that (smart, serious, dependable) throughout the election this thing would have been a lot tighter and who knows what would have happened.
21Same reason for me Jessie
22His concession speech made me cry even if there was booing from the OBAMA crowd that I was standing in in Grant Park. BOTH crowds booed. I'm really tired of explaining this.
23Honestly, I don't see what the big fuss is over the booing.
24Exactly blue. That's what you do when you're disappointed, carried away, or just plain rude. Guess what? There are people like that in both political parties. Honestly I was more offended by the Obama crowd booing since it was people being sore winners.
25Yeah, and I can completely understand how people would get carried away and boo. I wouldn't be proud of it the next day, but I'd probably do the same thing if the person I'd been so adamantly supporting for that long had lost.
I agree with you on the Obama supporters...that doesn't make us look good if we're booing the losing team.
26Ok, enough waiting. Who was the top talker for November? Has anyone heard?
27Oh yeah! I was just thinking about that.
28"His concession speech, it was very dignified, unlike the audience."
I agree! It was very nobel and respectable...and then the audience was heckling him! I was very upset about that. I think he went out on as high of note as was possible.
29And just for the record because i didn't read all of the posts, people that booed at the Obama rally were out of line as well. Tackiness knows no party.
30I have to ask...why is everyone so defensive about people thinking it was inappropriate to boo? No one has said derrogatory things about the "Republicans" doing it , so I am wondering why there are multiple posts that are pointing out that Democrats do it too? Those individuals are responsible for their actions, not their party. It seems many people are arguing against a point that no one made (that one party has the lock on booing).
It is amazing how people are so quick to anger.
31Jill...this goes back to the day after the election. Everyone was making a big deal out of the republicans booing...like a REALLY big deal. I was simply trying to be fair and point out that it wasn't just McCain's crowd that was booing. It's been talked about many times...so some of us are reacting from those earlier threads. Sorry if I seemed a little exasperated.
32His confession speech to me. Brought back the old McCain, before he sold his soul to the Karl Rove tactic of politics.
33My favorite McCain moment was when he said Obama's not a terrorist and will make a fine president.
