Lately my sleep has been very disruptive. I have been waking up every night at the same time in an abrupt and panicked way. Last night I was dreaming that a biker was about to fall on me, but right before he fell, my body jerked me so hard that I woke up.
Waking up after being startled in my dreams has happened to me before. About a year ago I noticed that this was happening as well, but then one night it all just stopped. Is this kind of thing normal? Also, I think it's very strange that I wake up a the exact same time every night. Sleepy Scarlett

Dear Sleepy Scarlett
There is no exact science of interpreting dreams and everyone has their own opinion. Our minds are always active, even when we are sleeping. When you wake up in the middle of the night, are you able to fall back asleep? Do you notice that you are you drinking caffeine late in the day that could be interfering with your sleep patterns?
Are you ingesting fluids before bed which makes you wake up to use the bathroom in the middle of the night? Also consider that could be a noise in your house, outside of your window, or in your neighbors house that occurs every night at the same time that could be waking you up.
Try setting an alarm 20 minutes before the usual time you wake to see if you can hear anything. Do some detective work and see what you come up with. Jerking yourself awake right before something bad happens in a dream is a normal reflex. Even in your sleep, you are aware of your surroundings and will want to protect yourself from getting hurt.
Dreams typically come from life experiences during the waking hours. When your emotions or needs are not fulfilled, your mind goes into over drive in your sleep. Dream use our subconscious mind to complete those needs and wants. Sweet dreams.
