There are a plethora of birth control options out there so men and women can enjoy sex without having to worry about becoming parents before they're ready, but sometimes a couple has an "oops" moment. Whether it's because the birth control wasn't that effective (like the Pull and Pray Method), or something went wrong with it (like the condom broke) the result could be an unwanted pregnancy. I would have been 6-for-6 on the quiz, but the last two were iffy. Also, the main reason I am answering this survey is because when I was at my dentist, I mentioned my niece's two-year-old daughter and the dentist said he has a one-month-old son, their third child. The guy is my age (mid-40's). "Well, it was an unplanned pregnancy." He said his other two boys are 15 & 18.

I work with teenage parents and most of the relationships break up before the baby is even born. It's sad but true. I think unmarried single parents are going to populate society and the hetereonormative marriage is going to bite the dust.

One of my husband's coworkers has been dating this girl for something like 3 months and she just found out she's carrying his twins because she didn't use BC. I think she's 20 and he's 25 and her parents want him to marry her to make it "right". I guess I don't really get that...how is a marriage like that even going to work? It's like a forced relationship and then you go and throw the stress of kids into it...sounds ridiculous to me. I am child-free by choice and I'm always sure to take my pill every day. I'm good about it, but if I was more forgetful, I'd probably try the patch or NuvaRing or something else that didn't require as much thought.

a million suns- most IUDs have hormones, the copper one is the only one that I know of that doesn't. Talk to you Dr about them, the copper one will usually have you bleeding more in the beginning, but I think that's about it.

a million suns-- I have Mirena and have never had a child. There's more pain with insertion and a slightly higher risk of expulsion, but most doctors nowdays will give it to anyone. I didn't have to fight for it or anything.

Oh and does anyone have the IUC as well? (Sorry, I've been searching around for an easier form of birth control that does not involve hormones, so any info would be very helpful! It's always nice to get someone's opinion who actually uses it)

beaner, I know of several women who have used NFP or FAM methods for several years and they don't have any kids. Just because some women don't know how to do it properly doesn't mean that the method does not work.

Of course married couples are less likely to breakup than just people who are dating and have an unplanned pregnancy, that's kind of duh.

i can say for the women saying "why wouldn't she be on BC?" i am not right now, and it's not because I'm stupid enough to think "it wont happen to me" I'm constantly paranoid about getting pregnant, but I was HONEST with planned parenthood back in... January? and i told them how much i really make and they decided i could afford the INSANE amount they charge for BC and doctor visits. which i realistically cannot. but this quiz only made me aware of some numbers, and reminded me of how persimistic i am when it comes to relationships and unplanned pregnancies.

I'm surprised only 25% of those couples break up... I thought the number would be closer to 75%, since over 50% of married couples divorce anyway

I know I watched Discovery Healthy yesterday and these ladies didnt know that they were pregnant. They only gained like 10 lbs and didnt show any symptoms of pregnancy! Talk about unplanned!!

Dear, I think you should have specified for #2 that you mean unplanned pregnancies only in the USA. I was thinking you meant globally since you did not specify. I think globally it would be much much higher than 1.1 million.

Birth control is not 100% effective. I have my son now, conceived using birth control. I am in my 30s and have been using birth control for over 15 years. Was not taking any other drugs. Fortunately, I am married and was able to welcome a baby into my life. But it does happen.

I know a few women who charted their cycles as their form of BC - and they miscalculated when they were fertile and are both moms now.

Even if you take birth control properly, women need to realize that certain medications may interact with your birth control. Doctors rarely mention this to women. So anytime you're given medication of any sort make sure you ask your doctor if it might interfere with your birth control. Otherwise, use a back up method
