What Do You Know About HIV?

Saturday was World AIDS Day, and I just saw an article about how the amount of cases of young Americans contracting HIV is on the rise. For young people aged 20 to 24, cases of new infection have climbed steadily, from 3,184 in 2001 to 3,876 in 2005 making it pretty clear that some people don't know how to protect themselves.

The more we know about HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, the more of a chance we have to prevent it. So let's test your knowledge and definitely share this quiz with people you love so you can help protect them too.

Then why do health care workers who have been exposed to blood/body fluids have to go have an HIV test done pretty much as soon as they're exposed? If it takes 2-8 weeks to find out, then it's pointless to do a test that soon after an exposure. I think this needs to be looked up. Sorry.

Also...it's good to know that I actually DO know this stuff! Whenever I go in to give blood to the local blood bank, they ask all these questions if I know what HIV is and stuff, and I always answer yes. Man, I know my stuff. :medal:

5/5. Knew about this since 10th grade from studying the African country of Lesotho in my Human Geography AP class. HIV/AIDS is so prominent there, as it is everywhere, that the men there skip having sex with women their own age and have sex with babies. Yes, babies. Of course, these babies are raped, and are ultimately either killed during/after the process, or end up with the HIV/AIDS virus.

Polyurethane condoms always have a note on the box saying they haven't been proven to stop transmission of STDs...they say "the risks of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STD's), including AIDS (HIV infection), are not known for this condom. A study is being done. There are laboratory tests on this non-latex material. These tests show that organisms even as small as sperm and viruses like HIV cannot pass through it." Basically saying that it isn't conclusive yet...

5 for 5... side note, it is possible to test before 2 to 8 weeks after exposure, actually days after exposure, using hiv pcr testing. however, it is expensive at a couple of hundred dollars. just a little info for the ladies who may not be able to wait.

I've spent that last week in my Women in Politics test talking about HIV/AIDS, mainly in the developing world. It's scary how fast it's spreading.
