As people around the country light up for 420, the annual marijuana holiday, I'm sure a lot of them will have deep, philosophical discussions about our drug laws, man. As a society we have chosen to outlaw marijuana, yet we allow (and encourage) people to drink alcohol. Both substances can be fun in moderation, and both come with risks when abused.

Still, while marijuana might be technically illegal, many people don't really consider indulging in pot a big deal. Even President Obama admitted to smoking pot and inhaling . . . frequently. What about you?

Here is my question to everyone here. How many of you that voted yes is currently heavily addicted to meth and heroin per the gateway theory. Thanks.
Yes, I smoke weed, and I think it should be legal. It gets on my last nerve when people start trotting out those tired old prejudices against pot and pot users! I worked hard to put myself through college so that I could get a good job, pay my taxes, and be a responsible citizen - I feel that if I choose to come home after a long day and have a quiet toke on my back porch, that should be my business and no-one else's. It's not like I'm spending my welfare checks on dope, knocking over corner stores to buy drugs, or selling dime bags to kids...and I'm not going out, getting stupid drunk and acting like a moron on the weekends like a LOT of the people who use legal intoxicants. Marijuana use has been stereotyped in the media and vilified by the moral majority, and for some reason people just accept this propaganda as gospel. Homosexuality and interracial marriage used to be illegal, ffs - just because there's a law against something doesn't necessarily mean it's wrong! Do some research, maybe get to know some of the 'stoners' you dismiss so easily, and think for yourself for a change, instead of just parroting what 'everyone' tells you - you might learn something.

I did it once, I do not think it makes no one trashy and a bad person I know very great people that smoke pot and have GREAT lifestyles. Smoking pot does not make the person bad, dangerous, scary, trashy, low life or any of that.... People make there own choices some blame it on the drugs but its just a mind game. My first time I was coming back from the country about 7 hours away from the my house and there was really bad traffic and I started to get really bad cramps I was in major pain and no store close by and a friend tells me smoke some pot you will feel better, I was like NO ARE YOU CRAZY, NO I DON'T WANT IT well the pain got so bad I started throwing up (sorry if its to much detail lol) because of the pain I just yelled give it to me and I had 2 puffs about 5 min later I was laughing at everything then fell asleep woke up a couple hours later HUNGRY AS HELL I had the famous munchies... had McDonalds *****THE END*****
i still smoke pot every day i have no recollection of the past 2 years because of it i just learned a week ago that i am married weird huh
hahahaha, i love pot. i'm not trashy, i just prefer not to die having fun. smoking weed has never killed anyone unless they were stupid n went driving which is their own fault! drinking is nasty. you smell like shit/vomit n you wake up with the worse feeling ever n prolly puking then too! alcohol has killed MANY ppl, even ppl who didn't even drink. I rather smoke some killer leaves n ease my mind than pop pills n over dose not to mention drink a lot just to get a buzz..I rather spend 50 bucks to get me high throughout the week than spend 100 bucks fora good night...get it?
In my opinion the reason it has not been legalized is illustrated in the bickering that has taken place in these comments. Not the facts that have been thrown back and forth. But the way one person gives their opinion. And that opinion is contended with an opposite opinion. And the first person then feels obligated to defend their opinion. With the right combination of outspokenness and closed mindedness people can fight about anything. Even if one side of the argument is completely right, and the other side is completely wrong… I feel it should be legalized. And I believe people should be more responsible and open minded in how they approach the world. Also, you know a lot more people who smokes then you think you do. The nice young man who listened to your problem and presented you with a solution. The sweet young lady who understood your situation and lent a helping hand. The owner of your favorite restaurant. The person who maintains your company’s network. The person sitting next to you. Don’t make it illegal because of the people who can’t help themselves. Don’t make it legal because of the successful people everyone looks up to. Do it to preserve the free will of a responsible adult.

yes, i smoke pot and i'm not ashamed to admit it either...at least i don't wake up with a hangover or next to some strange person the next morning:P
I don't understand when everybody says "never have never will" that seems so close minded. I smoked a lot of weed in the past, but now I feel like my body is too important to use any kind of substance, plus I make my living singing (smoke=bad). I feel like living your life never trying things will keep you very naive. Being trashy is very specific, it can be a host of things. Living without substances is freeing though.
I had tried smoking pot twice around college. It did nothing for me, I didn't like the smell, and couldn't understand why people liked it! Then I tried having someone shotgun me with Purple Kush. WOW! It was really great! Feels like an orgasm throughout your body, little pulses of pleasure, makes you feel horny, makes you hungry, and everything you eat tastes like paradise, movies are ten times funnier, and philosophical conversations are intense. HOWEVER, I stopped smoking it because, though it's better for people in every way than alcohol, it does: cause depression with frequent use, cause panic attacks the next few days after you got really high, makes you feel lazy and sleepy, and can cause psychosis with frequent use. Not worth it for people who have mental illness (like half the planet, these days!) However, I do think it should be legalized, absolutely.
to 91. you have to separate them for many reasons but for the most part it's because when around children you have to be in tune and able to fully focus on them. children are also impressionable and have little concept of where to draw lines(which some adults also lack but that's another discussion entirely)

I smoke very rarely. Probably about once every 2 months or so. Even then it's just one little baby hit off a blunt that's being passed around. That's all I can handle at this point. I don't see anything wrong with it. All the people I know who smoke regularly are extremely motivated and successful. I used to smoke daily when I was in my late teens/early 20's. I stopped because it made me eat too much and I was trying to lose weight. I used it for purely recreational purposes at the time. I think I turned out ok. I was never addicted to it. When I decided to stop at the age of 23, I stopped. I think it should be legal and taxed. It would probably still be the same price or maybe cheaper than getting it from a dealer but it would be better quality and uncle sam could make some money. It's a win win if you ask me.

And you know, even if a person does not 100% agree with a law, we agree to live in this society, with the privilege of being protected by our laws and government, so we should respect them, regardless. Also, someone said something about how its okay to smoke marijuana if you are not around your children... If smoking is not a big deal, then why would there be a need to separate one from the other? Hypocritical.

Damn I missed this thread cos I was busy getting high lol... 4/20 is my 2nd favourite holiday (after St Paddy's) so I had a 3-day roadtrip celebration :) I smoke weed several times every day, but I'm not trashy thankyouverymuch. I think it's funny that people criticize potheads but nobody seems to have a problem with millions of people treating their anxiety or stress with chemical medictions. Personally I'd rather burn a spliff than take pills and help fuel the corporate pharmaceutical machine... any natural remedy is preferable to me than creepy synthesized crap from a laboratory.
I used to smoke but almost all of the pot available in the US makes me feel physically heavy and mentally self-conscious. I still smoke when I travel abroad, especially in the Netherlands but also in general because there are other strains available in Europe which deliver a lighter, uplifting high as opposed to the heavy "stoned" common in the US. I do better with hashish than pot either way, and usually prefer it mixed with tobacco, though I don't smoke tobacco regularly either. All that said, almost everyone I know either smokes pot regularly or has at some point in their life. I like the smell and social nature of pot and I almost always get to enjoy the scent at parties or concerts, whether indoors or out. I think the continued criminalization of smoking pot is ridiculous and hypocritical. I applaud the moves many states are making towards at least decriminalizing medicinal pot. It's a good start.
i have made the deans lists 4 semesters of the two years that i have been in college. i still have a couple years to go. i was class president both junior and senior year of high school. i have smoked weed since the 8th grade, and have smoked weed everyday, multiple times a day, since my sophomore or junior year in high school. weed is not a detriment. it is the person, not the drug. if you are a lazy person with no aspiration or motivation, then you are going to be that way regardless of if you smoke weed or not. if you have your sh!t together, weed does you no harm.

I could also give you many other examples of intelligent, successful, and very worthwhile people who also happen to smoke. How dare you call me worthless? Seriously, how DARE you? You need to get off your soapbox and become educated. Please.
I am surprised to see so many ignorant comments about a plant-cannabis (Mother nature and God put it here) and so many supportive comments about alcohol (a man made substance). Alcohol and cigarettes kills thousands of people a year and they are both legal. There has not been ONE reported death or overdose from marijuana. Many of you should rethink your positions and do your research. Smoking marijuana past a certain age may seem trashy to some of you however, I consider drinking past a certain age to be trashy.
