The Waiting Game

Dear Sugar
I have always had regular periods but all of a sudden I have been skipping months. I just started dating a new guy and I am not on the pill so I keep freaking myself out that I am pregnant. Is it normal to all of a sudden have sporadic periods? Concerned Kayla

Dear Concerned Kayla
Although missing a period can be nerve wracking, most of the time it is completely normal. Woman typically have a menstrual cycle every 28 days, however, a cycle can range anywhere from every 23 days to 35 days --every woman is different.

There are many factors that cause women to miss their menstrual cycles including: hormonal problems, eating disorders, excessive exercise, physical illnesses, etc... Emotions play a big part in your body chemistry too, so feelings of unrest, stress or anxiety can affect your periods as well.

It is understandable for you to keep thinking you are pregnant. Stressing about the thought of pregnancy alone could be another reason why you are missing it, so take a home pregnancy test or see your gynecologist. If you miss two periods in a row, consult your doctor just to make sure everything is OK.
