Wow. This coat really does wonders, since this woman looks pretty slender to me. Must be a magical coat, too — it cost $145 in 1953 dollars, which is equivalent to $1,158 today!

Wow. This ad is so subtle.
1That woman cannot be more than a size 6... NO WAY!
2"if you are not slender..BUY THIS RIDICULOUSLY EXPENSIVE OVERSIZED COAT TO HIDE YOURSELF!!!!" @_@
Ugh...and the sizes are 34 to 46? As in INCHES on the waist? That's actually almost what the size range is at the store today - weird.
P.S. Who likes the color choices??? It comes in taupe, grey, beige, or black!!! How lame.
3I used to work at Lane Bryant and once had a customer who was an older lady that told me when she worked at Lane Bryant as a young girl it was a store mainly for taller women, not so much plus sizes.
4I can't get over the fact that Lane Bryant ever branded itself as such an upscale clothing line.
5Yup, it used to a store for tall women, or so my grandma says. Now I think the smallest size they have is 14. I shopped there a few times in my early teens when I was over weight. They have nice, in style clothing and it's not an intimidating store to shop in.
6I used to shop there as well, the store's design in clothing is "hip for older women". IMO...
7Black lamb's wool cuffs and collar. It is beautiful.
8Uhm, I am super tall, six foot one, and I would rather die than shop at Lane Bryant. Their style just does not work anyone. Women can be beautiful in all shapes and sizes, and I just refuse to believe a company can't come up with a more attractive aesthetic than that.
And by the way, if you are tall - just shop designer stores. They are made for the very tall and very thin. When I go in, the girls go nuts because I can wear almost anything.
Love the ad!
