Smelly Memorial: SF Voters to Decide on Bush Sewage Plant

The Presidential Memorial Commission of San Francisco has some big plans to honor outgoing President Bush — they want to rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Plant, the George W. Bush Sewage Plant.

The civically savvy satirists have collected more than enough signatures required to put the renaming initiative on November's ballot.

The chair of the SF Republican Party (yes, it does exist) calls the measure "loony bin direct democracy" and called its supporters "typical San Francisco crazies." The plant itself notes that it is an award-winning facility that keeps the environment clean, thus making it an unworthy vehicle for a statement on Bush's negative impact, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Do you find naming a sewage plant after George W. Bush funny or offensive? If the measure passes, will the renaming be a historical political statement, or just a stinkin' empty gesture distracting us from serious grievances?

Maybe next they'll want to rename the "Derek Zoolander Center For Kids Who Can't Read Good And Wanna Learn To Do Other Stuff Good Too." Hehe. This story makes me think of that movie.

I think it's funny that this bit of foolishness will actually be on the ballot. If it passes, the voters will just look like fools. I hope they have respect for the people who run the plant and vote against it. If the plant's people are against the name change, then the presidential memorial commission should just let this drop. Could you imagine telling people, "um yeah I work at the George W Bush Sewage Plant"?

The thing about San Francisco is that even if this happens no one will care. I doubt San Francisco will be humiliated and less respected. San Francisco is still a great city that allows people to have certain freedoms that are not allowed or even tolerated any where else. I am very lucky to live here. There are far more serious things for a city to be humiliated about.

I think we should name our public library the George W. Bush library. To me that would be more insulting than a sewage plant. Like the Bill Clinton Fidelity Center or the Ronald Regan Mental Health Ward. Irony. It's our greatest weapon.

Way back in the day my husband and I lived in an apartment complex owned by a German couple. My husband did the site maintenance in exchange for reduced rent. Lottie - the owner - was insane and made our life hell. We vowed to get a German Shepard and let it outside to "take a Lottie". Drunk and in our early twenties, we thought that was hysterical. I think this idea has about the same maturity level. Funny in theory, humiliating for the city if actually carried out.

The Berkeley College Republicans is one of the largest and most active student groups at UC Berkeley. I always supposed they felt more of a need to organize and stick together. If you're a liberal in that area, you don't need to join a club.

I agree mazdagirluk stranger things have happened and I don't think anyone here is about stripping freedoms. This is about preserving a constituency’s position as the anchor of progressive leadership in this country. In the every life of is the trash out and did you do your homework I'm sure no one gives two flies. However at the table of politics in this country where the policy that governs every day life is decided our weight in influence is carefully measured and not to be taken for granted.

I agree Stiletta if the voters pass this measure it will be the nail in the coffin of credibility. San Francisco has long had various groups some more liberal than others that have been nothing short of outspoken. The difference is this statement would not speak for one group it would speak for a great city and a great region. The paper this measure is written on might as well be a boomerang. For when cast it will overshoot its target and come right back to make a mockery of a citizenry that has a long history steeped in pride of being a strong progressive counter measure on the scales of partisanship. San Francisco has always masterfully balanced the tight rope of going too far and going far enough I pray they find their balance.
