Seven Year Old Caught With Crack Cocaine. Are You Shocked?

In Trenton, NJ, yesterday police said a 7-year-old boy brought 2.5 ounces of crack cocaine to school.

The boy and his 10-year-old sister both attend Parker Elementary School. The children are now in the care of the Office of the Division of Youth and Family Services. The parents, along with two of the children's uncles were arrested immediately.

Not shocked. I manage a retail store and see parents who use their children to steal on a daily basis. They stuff merchandise in their babies strollers and clothing, then when they can walk, send them in to steal, and teach them how. The kid gets caught, they play the part of the surprised parent who assures you the child will be punished and lets walk out the door and try it again later. It's not a far streach of the imagination to know that they use kids to run drugs and deliver them, etc. The kids get less punishment, or none, if they are caught.

Oh, God. I answered other, but it really IS just too long and complicated to be typing here in the comments, especially when I'm just about to run off to uni. Let's just say that it's 'all of the above', and therefore, 'other'. And nyaradzom2001, I agree with you. I miss seeing children playing outside. Should I ever get any, I'll make sure to find more ... 'organic', for lack of a better word, ways of entertainment for them.

not too shocked - i remember a kid in my class was arrested for drug trafficking when i was 11! also, someone was pregnant at that age, too. gah. glad that was my last year there and my parents moved me up to Canada.

i think i'll always be shocked by these things. not because i don't know it happens. but because it just happens. a lot. and it's awful. it's sad. just really sad.

It's stories like this that make me want to keep my son as young and innocent as he is now. If there was just SOME way to keep him completely sheltered from all this...I would do it. Anything. I am literally scared to death to have my son go to a public school, in fear of what he will find out about this world we live in.

This thread was way too depressing. Nothing makes me sadder than violence towards people who cannot protect themselves. As for the drugs, it is really sad. What can we all do about this? I get tired sometimes of feeling like it's all going to pot and then feeling like it's out of my control to do anything.

Trixie, there's a phenomenal amount of brutality in our culture now. It runs a continuum from common daily discourtesy (like driving in Los Angeles!) up to random and senseless violence. I'm sure there are a lot of factors, but I think they include: broken families, insufficient parenting (even in intact families), unemployment and poverty, inferior education (which contributes to unemployment and fails to impart the finer points of western culture, such as arts and literature), violent films and television, and making sure that a whole generation has great self-esteem (usually undeserved, which often mutates into arrogance and selfishness). A lack of social standards and ethics, because they are usually religion based and "judgmental". Probably also pervasive environmental pollution and highly-processed food, God knows.

I'm not shocked or surprised. It's just another situation where the parents didn't give a damn about how their actions were affecting their children. A 16 & a 17 year old were just arrested here in Ohio. They had broken into the home of a neighbor to wait until she got home & then steal her car. The neighbor came home, dropped off her developmentally disabled 18 year old daughter and left again. The two assholes waiting in the house beat & tormented this poor girl for 6 (SIX!!) hours. They SHAVED HER HEAD. The article in the paper quoted her as saying that she pleaded with them not to hit her in the head as she had recently had surgery. I know this doesn't have a lot to do with the topic at hand, but it's part of the reason that I'm not shocked or surprised at a 7 year old having crack.

Lainetm: i forgot about that story. just thinking about it now makes me want to cry a little. i'm usually against the death penalty, but i couldn't agree more with your sentencing suggestion.

cine_lover, I don't think it's a matter of whose rights take precedence. I think more often it's a matter of whether the government has the right to interfere in the family. I'm a bit torn on that issue, as I'm a fairly strict parent, which seems to be out of fashion these days. Some might say I'm too mean to be a parent! I'm more shocked by the recent story about the young-20's couple who let their 5-month-old die, sitting in the car seat in the crib. They were too busy playing video games and living their lives; it apparently took a few days. They had food, furniture, resources--just apparently didn't give a d@mn. IMO they should both be executed--by starvation, sitting in their own filth.

I am not shocked that people make horrible decisions like this, but to put your children in the mix really horrifies me. Thank goodness he brought it to school so that the police can deal with these very bad adults and the children can be raised in a safer environment.

Shocked? No. Why would I be shocked when we live in a society where parents rights come before a childs. Those kids will be back in the parents home in 3 months.
