So you're probably aware that people can have an allergy to latex condoms, but did you know they
could also be allergic to semen? It has to do with the common proteins found in it. They may be allergic to all men's semen, or they may only have an adverse response to a specific person's semen.
Symptoms include redness, pain, burning, itching, and swelling in areas where the semen has touched. What's worse is that some people are so allergic that they get hives or have difficulty breathing. Symptoms usually happen within 20 to 30 minutes of contact, and can last for hours or even days.
Dear's Advice: If this sounds familiar, make an appointment with your gynecologist. They may recommend that you use condoms every time you're intimate to prevent reactions.

That would be horrible!
1I actually have the problem with latex. It is not very pleasant at all.
2Ouch, sounds pretty uncomfortable. I'm guessing the person with the allergy would have to put up with some hives/discomfort for a bit if they wanted to make a baby. Or would there be some sort of artifical insemination help with that?
Imagine if you were allergic to condoms as well!
3er, artificial.
4I dont have a problem with this. But I read a book along time ago about a woman who was allergic to her husband. It sounded so bizarre at the time, but in the book ( i dont know if this a real procedure or if it is completely fiction) but the doctor cut a slice of skin off the husband and inserted it into the womans arm. The goal was to have the woman build up a tolerance to her husbands DNA. I dont remember what book it was though.
5I've read this info in Marie Claire.
6Yeah this would suck. Just think you've met the right man and there seems to be great chemistry between the two of you. Then there's a serious promblem that the two of you HAVE to face. You can't just shake this issue off!
Never heard of this before, wow.
7Well, I guess that you can be allergic to everything else, so why not semen?
8I had no idea this problem existed! That's so awful.
9Aww...poor couples who have to endure this...
10Thank you for researching this! my husband and i are unfortunate victims (although not as bad as hives/breathing trouble) so this is good to know its not some crazy coincidence or farce!
11Well, I have to say my allergic reaction is to durex condoms, when I was younger I had a horrible reaction. Lets just say I had a cold sore that looked as if I had a Hitler Mustache..and I was stuck in a England with it my WHOLE visit. So awful.
It was so embarassing..I called it my
Hitler Lip..lol
12wow.
13I got this once from an ex. I basically was allergic to him. I found out after the break-up and I found out at my first GYN visit. How fun.
Anyhow I got antibiotics for it and was all better in a week. It's not happened since. Thanks goodness!
14I have this allergy. SUUUCCCKKKSSS!!! Married, we've only both had one partner, and we have to use condoms every time... no justice is that!
15the one partner being each other...
16Thank you for this, I know I'll go see my doctor any time soon!
17I can't imagine this
I feel sorry for any couples that have to endure this during a
relationship...
