Say What? If a Wife Has Ambitions, Who Will Cook and Clean?

"More difficult is my wife, because she has many ambitions and talents, but who's going to be my wife? Who's going to fix the house up and make it nice? . . . That's been a very big, frustrating aspect. I've been married 46 years, and it's never been resolved."

— Director Francis Ford Coppola shares his marital frustrations in a new interview with the Village Voice. While this sounds like a backward outlook on gender roles, I can't help but hope that Coppola was somehow giving his talented wife a teasing compliment.

i definitely is hard to determine who does what..hteres some things my bf just seems to lack common sense about when it comes to cleaning and cooking..so i end up doing it and feel like a housewife a lot and its frusturating..but he does the laundry and takes out the trash..i just don't think all the scrubbing that i have to do is equal to his chores

I think he's teasing, but it also brings up a good point. Don't judge me too quickly, though! As newly married myself, it's been a challenge to figure out who does what, coming from different backgrounds and maintaining careers. A marriage/relationship and a household can need a lot of care and work to maintain. Nowadays I think there is some interesting "give and take" going on by couples and even individuals trying to balance everything. Anyhoodles, another topic for another day, I guess.

46 years of talent and ambition. 46 years of paying a maid to clean the house. Sounds like a perfect resolution to me and a man who admires his wife.

I agree..if he is teasing then it's cute. Because obviously they've been married for that long so it must not bother him that much. Good for her for having ambitions and goals when she obviously would not financially need to work a day in her life.
