I'm getting over surgery this week, and haven't done weights for a while. I'm skinny, but I feel fat. I know exactly the feeling she means.

Meh. Those activities are good for you, whether you're 'skinny' or 'fat'. At least she's not admitting to going on some fad diet, or starving herself.

well said, Tres - I completely agree with you too Spacekat (and hope you're feeling better!!!) that toning exercises are good even for very slender people, but if her reasoning really is that she is comparing herself to others and making a change as a result, that's sad to me.

I agree with Spacekatgal. By exercising, she's probably going to end up healthier than many of her fellow models. And though she looked great to begin with, she never was a "super skinnny" model. I would take more issue with this if a size 0 model with protruding bones called herself fat. Also, I've always looked at modeling as a job like any other. Their JOB is to wear clothes and to look how designers tell them to. They don't have to lose weight; they can find a different job.

The whole reason why anyone wants to lose weight is from comparing themselves to others. If someone says that's not the reason, they're lying.

I agree with tres, her reasoning is sad. Not just that she's comparing herself to others, but that she actually sees herself as "the fat one", that's sad.

@ Anon - I agree. I'm just going to throw out there that I'm far less worried about a size 6 woman saying she's going to take up running and Pilates than I am about a size 16 woman saying she's going to sit on the couch and eat and McDonald's.

Well I wish I was "fat" like she is, I guess doing pilates and going to the gym can't be bad for anyone but it's just kind of sad that she feels she is fat.
If she does, imagine how fat all the "normal" (as in non supermodel) girls must feel, I'm just concerned with the image it can send to easily influenced girls who take supermodels as their model, they're already struggling to try and look like them and get to a size 0, so if they hear that even those girls think they're not thin enough, then they're definitely going to have unrealistic goals and might do things that are really unhealthy and dangerous for them to get there.
I just think models are not models for nothing: they should know it's because they do have an amazing body and gorgeous features, I know it's a tough business to be in and of course they're allowed to be self conscious like anyone else but they should be more careful before saying things like these and think about what consequences it might have on people who look up to them.

This is sad. I'm glad she's losing weight the healthy way and not starving herself but I don't see any weight she needs to lose. From that picture she looks pretty small to me.

What she is saying does seem completely healthy and reasonable. But, the reality is that not only is she going to do those exercises but she is going to starve herself until she is skinny enough.

That is what all models do, no matter how much they exercise and or say they are vegetarian - they all starve themselves and just say those other things to make people THINK they are getting to 90 pounds in a healthy way.

SO disagree with that statement! People lose weight for a lot of different reasons! Like looking at the scale and realizing you're overweight, wanting to be healthy, wanting to look better (which isn't always a bad reason, models aside), or knowing what your best weight is.

The fashion industry is the cause of so many young girls striving to obtain an unrealistic body type. The fact that Lara is calling herself "fat" is setting an awful example for people that look up to her. I agree with Anonymous. Models STARVE. That's why most of them look emaciated. It's not excercise and healthy eating that get them that way.

it's true that a lot of times her legs looked kinda stumpy- but i don't think it's the figure, it's the dress! i mean think about it, the MET gala costume thing this year?? she is a hugely successful model that is skinny but not starved, and i thought i could count on her not to go the starvation road... so sad. i mean, exercising is great but she's gonna over do it and probably not eat enough to compensate.... this sucks!

I keep reading her quote and it's still just so sad to me. She isn't saying she wants to do all this exercise to tone her muscles, she's saying she wants to do it to lose weight because she's fat. Sad, just very sad.

Women are competitive, but it is sad that uber skinny isn't attractive, so many of us are striving to win by losing weight... but end up just losing.

Where are these curves exactly? I must be crazy but, she looks pretty thin to me.

Anon #18, google "lara stone," then click on the google images tab. I agree, she looks super thin in this photo. But, she is actually fairly curvy, you just can't tell here.

chloe bella - I'm fairly sure that a "size 16" woman (oh, the humanity!) eating fast food isn't a threat to society anymore than a size 6 woman doing the same action is. There are plenty of size 16 women who exercise and eat right while there are supermodels who are snorting coke and starving themselves in order to stay thin. In the long run, health is more important than weight. And I find it humorous and quite sad that these women resort to extreme measures for a career that lasts a minimum of five years.

As for being thin as a job requirement: In the real world, we have these things called "unions." Decent people decided that it was morally wrong to put yourself at risk for a job. Please explain to me why modeling is exempt - unless you believe young women should suffer in order to bring to life the fantasies of perverts and men who aren't even attracted to women in the first place.

There was a big article recently in Time magazine, which pretty much busted the myth that exercise = weight loss:
