When a computer dials you up and greets you with an prerecorded message, you've been robo-called. Robocalls, the unenthusiastic way to describe an automated call on behalf of a candidate, are exempt from the Federal Do Not Call Registry.
Under a 1991 law, the dinner-interrupting robots must tell you who is sponsoring the calls as well their return phone numbers. McCain, a victim of smear calls in 2000, defended a recent surge in campaign robocalls which warn voters that they "need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the US Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans." On Sunday, he said: "These are legitimate and truthful and they are far different than the phone calls that were made about my family."
Back when Mitt Romney was hitting up voters with automated calls the majority of you said you'd consider not voting for someone who made a robot call you. Since most Americans despise impersonal, often negative, phone calls, it's a surprise candidates use them.

dont laugh but I STILL have one from 4 years ago when Gov Arnie did one for Bush. Its the funniest thing to listen too.
I dont like the Robocalls, I dont like the real people calling either. The RNC in my area called to poll me, and asked "does McCain have your support in this election" and I said "who is mccain" joking and I thought the dude was going to choke.
1Haha, that's awesome CG. I wish I could get a call from a real campaign worker, but I don't have a land line. Every time I'm at my parents' house and an unknown number calls I answer it hoping I'll get my chance
2Is anybody really going to change their mind after listening to one of those phone calls?? "Thanks automated message! The veil has been lifted from my eyes!"
3Who actually listens to the whole thing anyway? As soon as I hear robot voice I hang up.
4I think robocall technology must be relatively cheap.
5I know real persons calling is the cheapest, but it does require an organized and deep volunteer base.
Cute icon, Great S.
6see if I was running. i would do the Robocalls but have the voice of the computer from War Games do it. That way I was sure to get the 80's generations vote.
7That's awesome, CG.
8Ugh. When I still had a landline, I would get robocalls from some local rep. talking about 'town hall meetings' that would last so long they'd get cut off on my voicemail. That definitely wasn't the way to get me interested in whatever he wanted to talk about.
9CG, you're like my nerd soulmate.
And thanks Janneth!
10My husband thinks I am the biggest nerd of any woman, but now he will know I am not alone.
11I don't like robocalls
Even the 'positive' ones. Our household has been hit so much with those these days. Of course all of them are from the Dems side since we're in the Union and registered Dems. They always appeared as 'unavailable,' too.
I think it was a pretty cheesy robocalls made by the McCain campaign (sure, it may contain some 'facts' some would argue but the way they presented it is just not..'right'), even my fiancee who's going to be voting McCain thought that it's way unnecessary when he heard the McCain's robocalls on CNN the other day.
12thats funny CG!
Honestly though... i doubt anyone is waiting for this call to make up their mind!
13I hang up on those.
14GS My nerd BFF.
Oh I am a dork, you cut me? and I bleed reeses pieces and then ET's hand will come out of the cut and scoop them up.
15Thank GOD I have an unlisted number.
16lol, I don't do et. I had a horrible dream he strangled me with those finger like toes of his. Now, you cut me and it smells like the bog of eternal stench.
17smell bad

19Robocalling is much much worst than any telemarketing I have ever recieved in life....yes even when Stevie Wonder called during the CA primaries to tell me to vote for Barack Obama...it was still annoying!
20The robo just calls again! LOL. Why can't they stop this, they even call in the weekend, for the love of God.
21The funny part is, we're UNLISTED in the phone book, I've even put our number to the Federal DO NOT CALL registry, but we did have to submit our phone number in our local union, I suppose, that's where they get our number.
I live in Oklahoma and absolutely no one is calling me. Of course, nothing is going on down here in Oklahoma. The area is mostly Repub...but there are growing numbers of Obama supporters.
I saw Gen. Colin Powell's endorsement Sunday, and I was absolutely moved. I respect this man incredibly. My father even once mentioned that he thought Powell should run for President.
Obama/Biden 08
22Janneth is busy right now, but this is her roboblogger just saying hey everybody.
23Mich, I get calls from campaign workers on my cell. Probably because I have signed up with them to volunteer, though.
I got a recorded call from Michelle Obama reminding me to register to vote, and I totally squeeed.
24squeeed, is that peeing and squeeling at the same time? Sounds messy!
25Better than sharting
26ain't it the truth?
27It ranks pretty high on my "worst nightmare" list.
28I went, "Squeeeee!"
