The Report Hillary's Conceding Might Be Wrong? Is it the End?

What's going on here? The AP reported scant minutes ago, and I quote:

Hillary Rodham Clinton will concede Tuesday night that Barack Obama has the delegates to secure the Democratic nomination, campaign officials said, effectively ending her bid to be the nation's first female president. Obama is 40 delegates shy of clinching the nomination, but he is widely expected to make up the difference Tuesday with superdelegate support and votes in South Dakota and Montana. Once he reaches the magic number of 2,118, Clinton will acknowledge that he has secured the necessary delegates to be the nominee.

The moment the story hit, the news went nuts with this part — perhaps overlooking the very next sentence.

"The former first lady will stop short of formally suspending or ending her race in her speech in New York City."

Terry McAuliffe just said to CNN that she's "absolutely not" planning to concede. "Until someone has those numbers" there will be no concession. And he says of the AP "They are 100 percent reporting incorrectly."

OK! Your guess is as good as mine! Is the denial just a bandaid until tonight because the story broke? Will the tune change tonight? Is she dropping or not?

Wow- I really feel that the AP might have waited until after the voting was finished today. I don't know what effect it would have on the day's voters, hearing that the race was over before they'd voted. I know it's news, and it's their right to do their jobs, but the timing seems odd to me. And thanks Jillness- I love your new pic. You're lovely!

It's not necessarily over because its within the power and rights of superdelegates to change their endorsement/vote at any time. It probably won't happen, but it technically could.

Bookish I love your pic! The AP just called that Obama won the nomination! They said that the superdelegates that have endorsed him today, combined with an estimate of getting at least 30% of the vote in the 2 states today, leads to a total of more than 2118.

Very nice picture, Pop. Very fashion forward. I expect this will be an especially ugly campaign - the candidates may try to stay above it, but the Swift Boaters and Move On will get ugly.

Oh, it's true, lindaloo, we really ARE all ridiculously good looking. Sorry, couldn't resist. I think she needs to run as long as she feels she needs to. While I'm personally rather weary of the primary race, it's a democratic process- my hope is that when the last few voters have had their say, a decision is made that will allow money and energy to begin focusing on the general election.

"Do you guys think John McCain will have the full support of the big "Republican attack machine" going into the general election?" Don't some of the conservative pundits really hate him? Ann Coulter comes to mind, although I'm not sure anyone pays attention to her anymore. I think that once it's team red vs. team blue the faults you see in the candidate who's supporting your party will pale compared to the faults you see in the opposing candidate. Only time will tell. I do think that both Obama and McCain are decent men and that their pledges to run honorable campaigns are heartfelt. That said, I think both of them will have plenty of people who aren't under their control who can do the dirty work while they denounce it. I'm not saying that they'll be in support of it, either. Just that in many cases they truly will have no control over what goes on the air.

She totally isn't nor should she concede. Hillary is just a few more "Jeremiah Wright-esque" stories away from the nomination. (Unfortunately, I'm not kidding) Super Delegates are fickle (by design) and should not be treated in the same manner as the rest of the delegates. I don't think McAuliffe's comments and the AP story are incompatible. They are both saying that she won't concede until Obama hits the numbers. If you combine this with the rumor that Obama will get the numbers tonight it makes sense that she'd concede. Seems very odd to me that she waited this long though. It makes me think she was really relying on the MI and FL seating to go very differently.
