Relationship Protocol: Are You Always in Touch?

Even if they're living under the same roof or have plans to meet up after work, I know many couples that still touch base multiple times throughout the day. I think it's really sweet, but communication overload can be irritating for friends and co-workers when the incessant phone calls become disruptive. When I'm in a relationship, I like to share all the excitement of my day with him in person, but what about you? Are you and your significant other in touch throughout the day? And if so, how often do you typically talk?

My bf and I do live together, but there are many times that we're both so busy we don't see each other all day. When we don't, we always check in once, and say "I love you!"

we text throughout the day. we are both in school [about 50 min away] so we don't see eachother often. we talk on the phone every now and then.

We have 2 different types of job, his is on his feet all day and I sit behind a desk so we don't talk at all during the day, we will text back and forth but we save the convo for when we get home.

My husband and I talk on IM all day. Then he calls me on his way home from work.

My SO and I talk a lot during the day but at very regular times. We work different schedules and don't live together, so we talk once in the morning, once on his way to work in the afternoon, when he gets off work and right before one of us goes to bed. It works for us.

I guess this is a really personal thing per couple. The fiance and I live together, so we really don't do more than the occasional email during the days. We're both usually pretty busy at work. Besides, not checking in gives us more to chat about once we're both home in the evenings. I think we strike a really good balance. When we're together, we're actively spending fun quality time together. But when we're apart, it's no big deal. We each know how to be individuals as well as being a functional and happy couple. I wouldn't want to be with anyone who needed to check in with me all the time (that also goes for friends and family).

We used to chat throughout the day, but now we just share our days when we get home. Occasionally we'll chat during the day if one of us reads a compelling article or things like that.

My boyfriend and I email through out our day and then chat on the phone later that night a time or two, I don't think it's overboard at all.

we keep intouch throughout the day but it is just quick. to know that we are both doing okay.

We send texts once in a while when we're at work if we have something to say. We sometimes go all day without checking in though. We see each other every day after work so it's not a big deal. My ex would text and call all the time when I was at work. He was crazy about knowing what I was doing and when I was going to be home blah blah blah....that was SO annoying.

We talk a lot during the day! Usually when he wakes up, then either @ lunch or around 2 he brings me tea :), and then I usually call him when I am leaving work to let him know to get his ass home because I am starting dinner!

My fiance and I do check up during the day for a few minutes but some days more or less than others bc of mtgs etc. We gchat a few times and I always call him once to say hi, sometimes in the middle of the afternoon when I'm bored or sometimes when I'm leaving work bc I go home before him. I do it bc I miss him! Whenever I am out without him I always call when I'm on my way home and same for him when he leaves his soccer matches or leaves from having a drink with the guys. It's always nice to hear from him when we are apart! Also with wedding planning some days I have important issues to discuss with him so that always warrants an extra phone call.

Not a day goes by where I dont touch base with or hear from my boyfriend. We always chat online when we get home from uni or text eachother during the day. We only get to see eachother once a week so it's awesome when I get a text during a lecture or over lunch.

I guess the other thing is that I like to give my boyfriend /some/ space during the day. We see each other all evening long and wake up next to each other so he needs something that's his. He likes it when I text him but it's because it's not all that often I do. Got to keep some mystery!!

BF and I are really in almost constant communication. We are both online all the time, and I like to talk on the phone when I'm driving. We aren't necessarily talking all day, but if something happens that we want to mention to the other, we're there.

Sometimes we talk on gchat but ... we don't really have too much contact throughout the work day as we have v. different schedules and varying levels of busy-ness.

Hmm. When he goes to work he goes to /work/ and I don't hassle him throughout the day. Most of the time he'll be busy at his desk so he won't notice a text message or email from me anyway. We live together and I don't think it would be fair to keep messaging him random stuff throughout the day when he has to concentrate. He takes his work very seriously and I respect this.

I think like the others have said, it's a matter of balancing that and being appropriate. I am frequently in email contact with close girlfriends throughout the work day, so i would think nothing of being in email contact with my boyfriend that way as well (if I wasn't single). In the past I have avoided taking calls from my boyfriend while out with friends, but I would touch base throughout the evening inconspicuously - like when in the bathroom or while waiting for my friends to come back from the bar. I think it depends on the situation, whether there are others present, whether you live with them or will see them fairly soon, all that kind of thing. There is such a thing as being TOO connected so that you annoy people around you, haha!
