Relationship Protocol: Whose Family Are You Closest To?

Although I do know some couples who are distant from both their sets of parents, most couples I know are close with at least one person’s family. Whether it’s a matter of distance or similar personalities, sometimes it’s just natural for a couple to be more tightly knit with one person’s family over the other's. As a couple, whose family are you the closest to? Or do you find that it’s completely equal?

I have a big, happy, outgoing, funny Russian family. My family loves him, and treats him as one of them, even though he has a hard time understanding what's going on half the time. He's invited to all family events, skiing vacations, everywhere we go, he's welcome to join. His Family is very English, and doesn't really accept me at all. He grandparents are very kind but his mother and sister really don't understand my family and culture.

We are way closer to my family then his. His family is physically farther away and are emotionally on another wave length. They are very hard to talk to and they don't get it.

i think that based on geography we're closes to my family. we live about 45 minutes from my side and a few states away from his family - so although i get along really well with all of his side and i'm comfortable with them when he's not around - it's just not the same. he has a key to my house and we see my mom and brothers just about every weekend....

Mine. I'm SUPER close with my family and they live a bit closer. He's not as close to his parents as I am mine. But him and my dad really get a long, they go surfing together!

Other than his parents and one of his brothers, my boyfriend's family lives about four hours away, while 99% of mine live within a 20-minute distance. We're so comfortable around my family; they all took to him so easily and vice versa.

We're more close to my family right now...but thats only because they're close to Toronto and his family lives on the East coast. I've spoken to them a few times and they all seem very easy going and a lot of fun...whereas my family is more conservative and stuffy... so I have a feeling if everyone lived in relatively the same place we'd probably be closest with his family

I'm closer to my family (I work 3 days a week with my father, and see my Mom multiple times a week at lunch, or stop by before going to the office and say hi), but together we definitely spend more "weekend"/fun time with the hubby's fam. I wish we spent more time with my family, due to the fact that while I really do like his family, they can be a lot to deal with (his mom is a nursery school teacher, and has a tendency to talk to everyone like they're three, the woman also has more exuberant energy then a puppy on crack, and his cousins are all very loud and like to drink A LOT at family gatherings - not that they get violent or anything, just very rowdy and very noisy). My family on the other hand is way more chilled out, which is probably why we don't see them as much, we don't really do the whole "plan things weeks in advance" thing. :)

While my family is about 1.5 hours away, we are both much closer with my family than with his (even though they are about 30 minutes away). My family has embraced him like a son already (which is good since we're planning on getting married one day) and my family is a bunch of really smart geeks just like him so they get along really well.

My fiance and I are far closer to my family than we are to his. I've always been close to my parents and sister (we all talk everyday). My fiance's family broke up when he was little, and he hardly keeps contact with any of them. :(

both our families are very far away. :( which sucks, especially on special occasions. but i like his family and he likes mine just fine. but im very close to my mom, we talk every day and hes very close to his sister, they talk everyday.

We are much closer to my family. My family is very big, with 5 kids, so we always are hanging out at my house. Whereas, with him, he has his mom and dad and one brother. His mom is very close with his Ex, so it has been a little awkward, but she has always been very nice to me. But it just seems like I only see his family very rarely, while he is like part of my family.

We are both closer to my family (well, my dad and brother; my mom and stepdad are a different story). My dad is just one of those guys you can't help but like, and he makes you feel like an old friend the moment you meet him.

hard to say. we spend more time with his fam cause of where mine lives, but then again i usually leave him alone and spen the time i want with my parents alone....i guess his but i wish he would spend more time with mine.

His, for various reasons. They're going to be great in-laws. They took me in as one of the family almost immediately after meeting me, and now they don't even want to let him come visit if I can't make it either :)

My family is out of state but I am close to them and they love my boyfriend. My boy's family sadly doesnt consist of many people but they all live here..and I love them too..well his mom and granparents..not too close to the rest

We're physically closer to his family, but we get along with my family much better. We're very laid back people, like my family, but his family is so filled with drama and stress!

Definitely mine. His immediate family is scattered around the country; mine lives about 15 min. away from us and we're there at least every other weekend for a BBQ or something.

I would say we are equal. My parents and his parents live in the same neighborhood so we visit both of them alot. But, I am extremely close to my HUGE family and he understand that.

Probably my sister. Yea, my mom and dad are my parents...but my sis and me can talk to each other and relate.

My family lives 7-8 hours away, and my husband's lives 15 minutes away. Despite distance, I'll always be closer to my family. He and I had completely different upbringings, and I just don't understand certain things about his family (not in an offensive way). Plus, I talk to my family at least once a day. My husband knows how important my family is to me, and we visit for at least a week during Christmas... he gets along with my Dad really well :]
