The film Gone With the Wind was released 70 years ago today. It went on to win 10 Academy Awards — a record it held for 20 years — and it still holds the record for top-grossing US film when adjusted for inflation.

But the film would not be considered one of the best of all time if it were not for the characters and writers — or even its amazing set design. Charged with the laborious task of securing a husband during the Civil War, Southern belle Scarlett O'Hara spouts off some of the most unbelievable-sounding lines. See if you can tell the real from the fake.

whitneydiane & anonymous- these ppl were living a cushy life because of the slavery which included murder, rape,sadistic horse whippings and beatings, selling these people away from each other, and keeping them illiterate for fear that if they were educated they would have more agency to rebel. i read the book and the sequel to the original book and i saw the film. i enjoyed all three until i realized that this story whitewashed the horror of slavery and the horrifying type of person you would have to be, to be a slave owner and inflict even some of things i listed above on other people. and there's really nothing redeeming about scarlett's character to me throughout the entire story.

2/5 Saw the film for the first time last summer while visiting friends in Hungary. And watched the made for TV movie (i think by BBC) of Scarlett's life after the American film where she goes to Ireland, meets distant relatives, etc. etc. Long movies, but great way to spend the lazy, hot summer evenings.

Oh my gosh, Whitneydiane, I have always said that about Melanie--she was such a simpering little wimp! Scarlett waas, undoubtedly, one of fiction's most selfish characters, but at least she could take care of business!

I don't believe that it glorifies slavery whatsoever. It just shows that these people were living a cushy life until the war THEY began, and Scarlett has her redeeming qualities, if you have only seen the film then you may not know that (even though the book does show her manipulative side, it also shows how this saves her life). She may seem like a whiny brat but come on at least she can fend for herself. It was Melanie that irritated me.

Sloane220, it's a book/movie, purely for entertainment purposes. And in addition, my father is a civil war historian, and can tell you that slavery was already on its way out when the war began, because people were starting to "wake up" as to its horrors, and because of the expense. Robert E. Lee, for example, the confederate general, had freed his slaves prior to the beginning of the war because he felt it was wrong. Just wanted to pass along the info. :)

One of my favorite films of all time, and I just finished re-reading the book. Sloane, I definitely agree that it's not a pretty part of US history. But I'm always facinated with accounts that detail the losing side of a war (since history books are always written by the winners). It's interesting to get another perspective.
