Just about all of the women I know have taken the pill or are using it right now. The thing that's sad is that we take it, but many of us don't know much about it. Since it affects our bodies so much, I think it's important for women to know what the pill is and to understand the possible risks involved.

nicachica, this is my understanding: The hormones in the pill prevent you from releasing an egg (ovulating), and when you take the placebo pills, the lack of these hormones going into your body causes you to menstruate. But actually, since there is no egg floating around (since one wasn't released), the period is not necessary. That's why those "4 periods a year" pills aren't dangerous. But women are more comfortable with monthly periods (not as in they enjoy them more, but they're just more used to them), and there is a misconception that a woman needs to "clean out" her body by means of a monthly period. But actually, since the pill prevents a lot of new tissues being formed in the uterus (unlike during a regular cycle without hormonal contraceptives, when tissue builds up on the lining of the uterus for the egg to stick there if it gets fertilized), there is no extra "congestion" in there that needs to be flushed out. I think I said more than what the answer to your question was... sorry! And if I am wrong, someone please correct me!

i have taken the pill, but it always makes me sick. i was always the guinea pig at my OB's because if it didn't make me sick, it was like the anti-nausea Holy Grail there! i never found one that worked, and have been using the natural planning method for 9 years ... no mistakes! whoo!

Hormones do different things to fetuses than they do to full-grown women. While they may not always cause birth physical birth defects, depending on the hormone, and the level and time of exposure, there can be changes in the rate of development of certain bodily systems, especially the brain. Hormones that for us regulate things like our menstrual cycle or when we stay awake and go to sleep can affect things like the growth of certain parts of the brain, or how the baby's endocrine system functions when it gets older. That's why it's really important to be careful about taking any type of medication while you're pregnant, including birth control.

so if the pill does not cause birth defects...wouldnt staying on it while pregnant help keep your homone levels in check or something? hahaa I don't know, that just doesn't make too much sense to me

it worries me that i have been on the pill for almost 7 years and i only got a 6 out of 7. i was tripped up on the 'what kind of cancer' question..

Can someone please explain how you can get a "period" on the Pill but it's not really menstruation/ovulation? I've had it explained to me before but I can never seem to absorb why! Thanks!

7/7 Thank you. Thank you very much. *lol* I'll never take it anyway. However, what most people don't realize is that the prevention statistics aren't based on fertile time. They're based on overall time. So if you have sex 100 times and become pregnant once, it's considered 99% effective, even though you were only fertile maybe 10 of those times, which makes it 90% effective.

5/7! Damn! I thought that taking the pill when you were pregnant WAS bad and I had to totally guess on what type of cancer it prevented!

WHOO! 6 out of 7...not bad. I got tripped up on the birth defects one. I know my pill pack says to stop taking it if you are pregnant, so I just assumed that research had found that it could cause birth defects. Good to know and probably good to stop taking it anyway while pregnant. Don't pregnant women usually stop their period during their pregnancy anyway? Taking the pill wouldn't really be necessary then.
