The second Monday in October historically has been celebrated as Columbus Day in the US. But not every place in the country, or the rest of the world, marks Columbus's arrival to the new world the same way due to unsettled feelings about celebrating a historical figure attributed with the suffering of native people.

In South Dakota, the day is called Native American Day. In cities like Boston, New York, and San Francisco, the Italian-American community celebrates their native son with an Italian heritage parade. Find out what you know about the historical event marked today!

I didn't go to work yesterday...so, it was kind of a holiday for me. He could make up for his crimes by having C-day be a real no-work holiday across America.

Yes Jill I did use On Demand. We had two people over who had never seen Trueblood before, so I sorta caught them up on what was going on, but they still ended up talking DURING the show, I had to pause and rewind a couple of times untill i told them that if they said another word while my Sam was on the screen I would punch them in the ear.

how bad is that - i only got 3 right. oh well - i guess all those years in between being in school and learning about it and being in the world and not thinking about it has proven that i'm not really as good at remembering history.

5/5...not that I really agree with Columbus Day. I think there are much better people to celebrate by dedicating a holiday in their memory.

CG when I lived in Northern Wisconsin there was a decent sized Norweigan population and I used to love hearing "uff da". I never fully mastered the right time to say it though.

4/5 not bad...missed the Venezuela one! Our old HR person had a child in school...so she arranged our holidays around the school holiday and we had Columbus Day off. Alas, our new HR person doesn't...so we're slaving away today. :raspberry:

I lived on an island where he landed, and it is definitely not celebrated there. When I was in school we actually had assemblies to discuss why Columbus Day is bad.

"Uff Da!" ROFLI haven't heard that in a long time. When I worked on an Indian Reservation, we got every single holiday off, except this one. It was most definitely NOT celebrated, and for good reason.

I'm not taking the quiz because I like the way platinum looks more than the diamond icon thingie, but! I have COlumbus Day marked on my calendar as Indigenous Peoples Day and Habeus Corpus Remembrance Day. Not so excited about Columbus, because what did he do--besides spread disease?
