Men wave around bank statements on the popular Chinese dating show, If You Are the One, and the women aren't afraid to show they care.

Money is a touchy subject in America. Sure, it's nice to have, but talking about it — except to say you don't have it — can seem crass and gratuitous. Which is why it's such an awkward question when dating sites ask users to list their salaries.

Lots of people don't even fill it in, but quite a few do. Regardless of what it says, is it an immediate turnoff or are you happy to know the facts?

I don't know which is worse: Listing your salary higher to get someone, or actually going by it as a dating factor....

if someone actually listed their salary i would take it as that person having no concept of etiquette (needs training!). but i'd realize he could also be a sleazeball. however it being a high salary would still be tempting~! and i agree with Betty, if you dont think he's a loser/user being unemployed is not that uncommon right now, so it could be worth it to give him a chance

I say turn off, though I wonder if maybe a high salary intimidates me just because I have such an extremely low salary. I agree with French, the professional situation is all I care about. And even then, not so much. There are a lot of quality men out there now-a-days who are unemployed, through no fault of their own. If a guy came around who didn't have any other major character flaws, I might be willing to foot the bill for dates for a few months until he got back on his feet.
