"We started this first female protagonist, back in early pitch stages, in 2005. It's a convergence of the right idea from the filmmaker at the right time, and our directors are really — they write what they know. It's a director-driven studio, really, they drive the idea. At the time, Brenda Chapman, a director, had this idea for a story centered on a relationship that was based on and inspired by the relationship she had with her own daughter. So, that was the seed of the idea that turned into the Merida that we see today."
