John McCain has announced that these days, he's speaking softly and carrying a big stick, a la Teddy Roosevelt. McCain said, "I count myself as a conservative Republican, yet I view it to a large degree in the Theodore Roosevelt mold," with a nod to Roosevelt's reputation for reform, environmentalism and tough foreign policy.

Though he may be a political Rough Rider now, these new photos of McCain's POW cell show that he's already had it plenty rough for almost six long years. The pictures show that even after the cell was cleaned up for an American historical filmmaker, the Hanoi Hilton was a chamber of terror. Debra Watkins took the pictures in 1993 before the area was destroyed. The first photo shows the door to the cell. Next to the door you can see old locks probably used to hold leg irons and other torture implements. The other photo shows the inside of McCain's cell and the leg-iron contraption the filmmaker believes he was tortured with.
Though certainly his time in Vietnam is no secret, the account of his entire time as a POW, written by McCain himself in 1973 and published online for the first time this year, is a riveting read. It's long — bookmark it and read away at it this week — but the length and detail does nothing if not prove beyond a shadow that what this man survived is anything short of miraculous. To see some excerpts of his story, read more.
- This started on the first day. I refused to give them anything except my name, rank, serial number and date of birth. They beat me around a little bit. I was in such bad shape that when they hit me it would knock me unconscious. They kept saying, "You will not receive any medical treatment until you talk."
- "I had been reduced to an animal during this period of beating and torture. My arm was so painful I couldn't get up off the floor. With the dysentery, it was a very unpleasant time."
- "Once you become a prisoner of war, then you do not have the right to dissent, because what you do will be harming your country. You are no longer speaking as an individual, you are speaking as a member of the armed forces of the United States, and you owe loyalty to the Commander in Chief, not to your own conscience."
Perhaps this experience has shaped his Rooseveltian politics. Today, McCain says, "I believe less governance is the best governance, and that government should not do what the free enterprise and private enterprise and individual entrepreneurship and the states can do, but I also believe there is a role for government. Government should take care of those in America who cannot take care of themselves."

Emilio Pucci
'Government should take care of those in America who cannot take care of themselves."
My city is at war here in America...we like to call it baby Iraq. The difference is..the government hasnt spent a dime to help rebuild it. No jobs-schools falling apart-major homeless issues-crime rate is sky high..
1and yet we're spending billions to rebuild Iraq...
Call me old fashioned, but IMHO I think you should clean your own house before cleaning another.
2Amen LadyAngel89!
3Fo show, where do you live and how can you be so sure that the government has not spent a dime to help?
4my questions are the same as lilkimbo's
5I am so sad this morning, I can't get off the big stick comment.
Fo show: What city are you in? Has your neighborhood tried to step in, do they hold meetings, are they coorporating with police ---or are citzens just sitting in their houses complaining and being scared?
Side note: Why do you always pick the unflattering pics of Mc-OMG he has great pics and not just the young ones but recent.
6Hiya bellaressa,
No unflattery meant, I promise — I just picked a picture that helped tell the story, but on closer inspection I concur that he's certainly taken better photos — don't worry, you'll see more of those to come.
I thought I was being kind avoiding the series of him in Steve
Urkel glasses. . . oh, yes. They exist.
7Thanks Citzen,I think the Steve Urkel glasses might be kinda cute.
8Hmm... well, it's a look!
9I actually like.
10You took the words right out of my mouth, LadyAngel89!
11Fo sho: my questions are the same, however I will bring up a new one: what is the government's job exactly for you?
12I live in the murder capital.
The government did help once...by sending an extra squad of 200 policeman when I was a bit younger...but thats about it.
I believe that these Wars are in the Trillions. Now they may tell us its a billion here and a billion there...but its adding up!
Now..to answer some questions. The governments job is to build jobs, to get some of these people off the streets, improve health care issues, and improve the school system so that the future of america doesnt grow up in a corrupt society.
13New Orleans?
East St. Louis?
Detroit?
I've heard a lot of places called the murder capital.
14I'm confused.
15Thats my point!
We have multiple murder capitals that need major help. My city competed with New Orleans for a while. But when it got whiped out...some fled here and all over. And Ive been to every one. They all look the same-
Theres nothing to be confused about.
When New Orleans was hit by Katrina...there was a late response. But when a foreign country gets hit..theres a billion dollars of aid on the way!
16My point is that the term "murder capital" is thrown around a lot by a lot of people in an alarmist way.
The federal government had been giving money to Louisiana for years; they mis-managed it.
I'm a little confused too, bella.
17Maybe I am not understanding you correctly. Are you referring to the crime nationwide or your specific city and if it is the specific city which city are you referring to.
Are the citizens of the city and/or neighborhood doing anything supplemental to the city (i.e. protest, speaking out, working with the police or forming a crime watch)?
18I live in the murder shopping district of the world. Sure a lot of people die, but everyone looks great.
19And isn't looking great what's really important? :make-up:
20
21I have now failed twice at "codes" today. I hang my head in shame.
22Im not going to tell you guys exactly where I live..so you can make fun of my city-
My life is a bit too real for this happy community I see...
I think Obama knows my city..Im sure he has heard of it. He would relate to the problems because he took the time to talk to my people...witnessed with his own eyes the corruption.
Im just voicing my opinion here..Im not using foul language or anything like that...so please dont make me out to be such a bad person.
23Fo show, no one is making you out to be a bad person, we were just confused. And why do you think we would make fun of your city? We all have "real" lives here. If you refuse to tell us where you live, though, there is no real way to discuss this because it is impossible for us to do any research as to what kind of problems your city is facing and what the government has or has not done to solve them. By not telling us where you live, you are effectively making this discussion one-sided. And how do we know that you even live somewhere unsafe and are not just making this up? (I'm not saying you are, but your refusal to say where you live is suspicious, to me.)
On a side note, I am originally from Cleveland; I know about people making fun of my city! Hello, a river caught on fire there!
24Fo sho: the reason why I asked you what you thought the role of government. Was because your definition was not of the FEDERAL government but the state government under the 10th Amendment.
25Going with Kim's point: The District of Columbia has been known as the murder capital for the record fo sho and I live therem
26Lilkimbo- you are the main one..accusing me of things...so I dont know if I can trust you.(I hope that statement wasnt against the blog rules)
Now I know we disagree on certain issues, but that is the nature of opinion within a blog. I have no reason to feed you guys fairytales.
And it seems that yall are out to prove me wrong. I know everyone has there own life story..but I witnessed a lot in my time. Enough to write a book and base a movie on. But I feel its time for a Change. It doesnt matter which government. With the money they are pooring into Irag..a couple of billion can help each of our cities. Now if you lived in a nice clean hood all of your life..with wealthy parents, and attended school without the worry of not making it back home alive, well... you wont understand where im comming from anyway.
27Fo Show, what am I accusing you of? I am seriously wondering. I am very confused.
28It is a pretty big accusation to say that I can't be trusted not to make fun of your city. I want to know why you would say that. And don't just say I am "accusing you of things." I would like something more specific than that.
And you have no clue how any of us here grew up. Bella has admitted in the past that her family has had multiple financial hardships.
29you guys are running around in circles...
30Lilkim, I'm originally from Cleveland too and get "mistake by the lake" comments ALL the time.
Fo Show, it seems that you haven't been a member for very long. While we all have so many wide-ranging opinions, nobody is out to get anybody here. Reading other blogs, this tends to have a lighter mood IMHO, it's not like trying to read through ABC or NBC or other national news blogs.
We all appreciate what everyone has to say and try to maintain a respectable attitude. What we are also trying to further is educational and informative discussions. What lilkim said was true, we just want to research more.
31No..not my city. A Comment that was reported as an vicious attack-which I dont think it was.

33I think I been under a rock - I have never heard of the lake issue in Cleveland. I guess this means more research. I've only been there once for a conference and never visited the schools we have there.
34Isn't it sad, Lynne? I don't know how much you follow sports, but I am a big Browns and Indians fan and casually follow the Cavs. Every time I think one of the Cleveland teams has a chance to win something, my hopes are dashed. I always say I am going to give up, but I never do. I am going to go have my pity-party now.
35I'm still confused. Maybe you could pm me, fo show, so we don't make others read all of these comments.
36Agreed! I do try to follow the teams, but not so good! I really thought we could have made it to the NBA finals with Lebron...and almost for the Indians last year. Oh well, there's still hope, I guess!
37Naw...thats cool. Im done with it.
I'm from Gary Indiana.
38Isn't that where the Jackson Five are from?
