A Sacramento police officer hands out eviction notices to residents at a homeless tent city. The hundreds of residents living in a tent city along the American River were told to relocate to a shelter at the Cal Expo center.

Yeah baybay, I heard that in the news, too. They were saying that the shelter can only accomadate about 1/3 of them, and so the rest of the people are on their own. This is just sad.

The shelter that is in the article is full. They are not accepting any more residents of tent city, or anywhere else. These folks have nowhere to go. Mayor, Kevin Johnson, wants taxpayers to pay to have these homeless housed and fed in jails, but doesn't want to find funding for housing options. What's wrong with this picture?!

I feel for the police officers. Who wants to be the person who actually has to physically evict homeless people?

This sucks all around and contrary to popular belief, the shelters are maybe a half step up from where they might be. Lice, food poisoning, rape and theft run rampant in many shelters but it is the same in the street. This is just soo sad.

Wait...so they have to relocate to this shelter, which I agree is a better place both for the residents and for the city. But will they have to pay to *stay* at this shelter [many homeless shelters require small "rent" fees to stay there, sometimes as much as $8/night, which can be hard to come by if you're trying to stay off the streets]? Is this shelter a transition, helping the tent city residents to reenter society, possibly? I hope this helps everyone in the long run and isn't just a short-term solution.

Umm any kind of eviction is depressing. I'm currently facing the prospect of being evicted at the end of this month and there is no one to turn to help me (I'm already working with the city to try to prevent eviction). And though I don't live in a field it's still freaking depressing, esteem destroying and gut wrenching.

It is a sad situation, but Jillness has an excellent point. Hopefully, they will find themselves in a better situation with access to services that they need.

I feel bad for them, I really do. However, having people living in areas that are not meant to house hundreds of people really does pose many safety and health problems. Moving them isn't only good for the city, it is better for these people when you really get down to it. Very sad situation.
