and one more thing... I'm so sick and tired of people pretending to throw the whole "free speech" thing out there - no one's stopping you to speak, so stop pretending like we are. We just don't like what you say so we're exercising our right to express that. Stop leaning on the 1st Amendment when you're argument is failing otherwise. It's a false argument.

I live in a state that just vetoed the idea that gun owners should tell the state they lost their guns. What frickin' right is that protecting? Disgusting.

well the 2nd amendment is the only one that matters, right? and only without the whole "well regulated militia" part... I mean.. we wouldn't want to actually regulate it. that would be intrusive. Let's just trust those folks.

phatE, I think educating the responsible gun owners is a great direction if people want to implement more gun laws. That way they are trained to handle guns properly and shoot accurately, so if a problem does arise there will be less innocent casualties, and less accidents.

"Stricter gun regulations will not do much if anything for gun violence."I guess being from Tx and seeing how EASY it is to just go grab a gun gives me a different perspective. I do get where you're coming from, but I do think regulations are a start and would alleviate the issue in some areas.

Stricter gun regulations will not do much if anything for gun violence. Just like having a no gun zone does not deter or stop people from coming in and committing horrible crimes. Just picture what the scenario would have been in one of the no gun zone killings if just one other person in the schools classroom had a gun. Quite a different outcome I think.

I've heard about that juju that the gun in your house is likely to be used to against you. my dad had a pistol and a rifle in the house though I've never seen them but for some odd reason whenver someone tried to break into our house my dad would go out wielding this huge metal tool of his lol. Never understood that.

here's an old NYT piece that, if I remember correctly, gives some pretty interest insight into the attorneys who, quite literally, designed/built this casebet you wouldn't have guessed that they didn't want the NRA to have anything to do with the case initially... http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/03/us/03bar.html?ref=us

juju - where did you hear that fact? i just finished a book on concealed carry and home defense with guns and i believe it said that in only 3% of cases has the victim ever actually had to use the firearm against the criminal (meaning brandishing it is generally enough).. so I'm just trying to reconcile both those facts in my mind...

I believe people should be able to choose for their selves. If people don't want to risk their gun being used against them in an invasion, don't get one. If they want to take the risk and also be prepared to protect their families, get one. Criminals will be getting guns either way. I don't know the statistics, but I doubt that the majority of criminals are buying guns legally. A more rigid gun-buying policy couldn't hurt, but it's not going to keep the "he was so nice and quiet" neighbor from purchasing one.

I don't get why i has to be ALL or NOTHING..How many times do we hear of someone walking in and just buying a gun as if it's a pair of nikes?! I think we first need to really crack down on how easy it is to purchase one, and then go from there.

This exemption for DC has always boggled my mind. How is it Constitutional to prohibit these law biding citizen from exercising a Constitutional right?I cannot wait for the decision on this.

I don't support a ban all together, but at the same time the requirements to get a gun (which are different from state to state) are no where near where they should be.Guns should not be sold in Wal-Mart and pawn shops, I mean guns are more dangerous than prescription drugs yet federal regulation is a lot more developed there.In many states proper background checks are not done, I read somewhere that in some states w/o age requirements people can get guns under baby names (whose birthday is never looked into).The main point should be to stop guns from landing easily in the hands of criminals and mentally unstable people.

foxie i think you misunderstood or maybe i didn't make it quite clear. sorry bout that, its not just cities with high crime, I was just giving a scenario, but yes I agree that it stands for all

I have heard that argument that "most criminals will find guns illegally" so bans/restrictions don't work.But I have also heard that a gun in a home is 22 times more likely to be used AGAINST the owner, than to protect the owner. And if your home gets robbed, there are more illegal guns on the street.I think that folks have the right to defend themselves, but I think that restrictions should be in place. I will certainly never have a gun in my home.
