Pi Beta Phi, on a National level is one of the "best" sororities. They tend to be good-looking, blond, thin, rich and a little snobby, maybe a lot snobby. They were "untouchable" and "unapproachable". Jennifer Garner, Cate Edwards, Barbara Bush, and Faye Dunaway are Pi Phis so there is some variety from campus to campus but not as much as most sororities. At my school, Pi Phi's national rivals,like Kappa Kappa Gamma was the worst sorority on campus, and Kappa Alpha Theta, was just ok, if you couldn't get into Chi-Omega or Delta Gamma. From my understanding they all had dress codes, Pi Phi just had higher standards and could be "very direct" about who they wanted and their selectivity comes across in their dress code. I guess "exclusivity" has it's price.

I am a proud member of a sorority (I graduated from college in 2007, however you are always a member of that sorority even after you graduate).I can tell you that my house had strict dress codes during recruitment and they were to make sure that everyone looked as professional as possible, rather than how they would look lounging around the house watching TV. As may have already said, this is no different than a dress code at a job where you are supposed to look your best.However, our dress code was not telling us WHAT we had to wear, rather we had themes for each round of recruitment (colors, events, feelings we wanted to evoke) and used those guidelines to each find our OWN outfit.We loved this because although we were given guidelines for which colors we should be wearing, we all got to show our own UNIQUE selves through what we individually chose to wear.To this day I think it was a great system.

luckily, i went to a school that had a very small greek community, as it isn't my cup of tea, but as the other posters said, most sororities have such codes. hopefully with fewer grammatical errors

I'm in a sorority in Texas, and they picked outfits for us to wear during rush. This is the only time we ever look the same. While this list does seem harsh, it is only to make sure that the 100+ girls look their absolute best since its essentially a first impression to girls out in the real world for the first time. It's basically to show to the newbies that they are becoming a polished/best version of themselves by joining a sorority. While I don't agree with it 100%, it's not too different than a dress code at work, just written with extra chutzpah.

Conformity isn't encouraged in every day life in the Greek system; this is for recruitment parties. When going to a professional job interview, would you wear your most comfortable sweats? Probably not, but that doesn't mean that you have to be someone other than yourself in your interview.Additionally, every sorority has a different dress code, which will likely help potential new members figure out where they will fit in best. Of course you don't want everyone in your sorority to be the same, but you do want to have common ground; these women will become your friends.

What we non-greeks don't get is why conformity is encouraged. Why can't everyone just be and dress like themselves? Or is that the opposite of joining a sorority?

All This list asks you to do is remember Pi Beta Phi and forget Becky who is a part of it. I am all about individuality which is why I disagree with this list but I also acknowledge that there are two types of people in this world. Those who follow the path and those who create their own.Ladies who are about individuality UNITE!

i love this girl and her rules, especially when it's just a personal peeve :)to be honest, any girl who would be offended by this is a girl who would wear white shoes in the first place. this is never acceptable and she probably wouldn't and shouldn't be welcome in the sorority anyway xhehe

Hahaha I'm in a sorority in Texas and you better believe I got a list like this for every formal recruitment. Never bothered me because I would have done most of the things on the list and never had any problems with "fashion show" (when we try on our outfits to check for problems) and most of the girls don't really need the list. The list is really for the handful of girls who are going to show up in pants that are a size too small or a dress that shows WAAAAYYYY too much cleavage or something that is just weird.

Apparently, the girl who wrote this was actually joking and the thing got taken out of context. They ripped her to shreds for it on Fashionista, it was really brutal. They posted her twitter and facebook page. I would hate to be her right about now.

I don't know. The list pretty much assumes that it's not going to be warm out during Spring Rush. Being a New York girl myself I'll vouch for that assumption probably being correct

I knew this would make it onto Tres eventually. I'm in another sorority at Cornell and we have a list similar to this every year, all the houses here do it. We get this list up to a month in advance of recruitment. I don't understand why people find this offensive.

Yeah, I agree, OhioLiz and mamsita. Nothing on this list is really a big deal. You need to present a uniform front at Recruitment Parties. (Our dress code was actually more strict than this one when I was in a sorority.) And, I feel I need to reiterate mamasita's point: This list is intended for girls who are already members of the sorority, not for those going through Recruitment. The girls going through Recruitment likely get a much more relaxed description of appropriate dress.

Oh my, c'mon, stop drinking the Kool-aid. This is offensive and rude. Hillarious, as someone not being forwarded such ridiculous garbage, but still very rude. My personal dress would be completely acceptable, however, upon recieving this email I would decide I was better than this person and no longer needed to join such an insecure witch. I like her dress code. It's very thorough. I don't find it offensive, but then again, I could tell that the creator and I have a lot in common. She's not being a snob. (though it may sound like it with the cheap shoe comments) she's just telling it like it is.

Frootchinator, these are guidelines for women who are already in the sorority. It's a dress code so that there is a "united front" in terms of their look when prospective members come to meet them. A large part of it is PR -- if everyone looks the same, it can say "this is the type of sorority we are".

As someone who chose not to 'go Greek,' I do find this list amusing and a little offensive. But I recognize that girls who want to be in a sorority are probably expecting that they will be judged on their appearance at these events. Maybe they appreciate having such thorough guidelines and being offered one-on-one outfit consultation.

Agreed, OhioLiz. I was in a sorority (and still advise a local chapter now that I've graduated) and dress code and uniformity during Recruitment is to be expected. Personally I like this girl's rules -- I have nitpicky things and pet peeves about certain fashion choices, i.e. white shoes EVER -- but I do think non-Greeks won't get it.
