Pastor Hagee: Katrina Struck New Orleans Because Of Homosexual Rally Pastor John Hagee — whose endorsement Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said this past Sunday he was "glad to have" — told NPR's Terry Gross that "Hurricane Katrina was, in fact, the judgment of God against the city of New Orleans." "New Orleans had a level of sin that was offensive to God," Hagee said, because "there was to be a homosexual parade there on the Monday that the Katrina came."

Sorry, Lula, I thought Jillness was equating what Hagee said with McCain. I guess I misunderstood. And I realize that the media definitely gave Obama a lot more flack than McCain. I defended Obama on the Wright issue, though. And I agree with your last statement, but reverse it: Wright isn't the reason I'd never vote for Obama. I'm more concerned with his policies. I'm glad most of us on Citizen are more concerned with policy than with sensationalism. I wish more people were like that.

No one is equating what Hagee has said with McCain. What is being criticized is how much Obama got flack when it's evident that other politicians, McCain included, have had dalliances with religious leaders with extreme views. Fox news took Rev. Wright and played it on constant loop for months it seemed. What about Hagee? The hypocrisy of the other side is what's being pointed out, not the association. Hagee isn't the reason I'd never vote for McCain. I'm more concerned with his policies.

Jillness I think McCain was on This Week. If I can find the clip of the show I'll post it. McCain basically stated that he rejected Hagee's views on Catholics but still wants his endorsement. I believe he called Catholism a "whore religion".

Dear Mr. Hagee, You are a completely disgusting waste of human flesh. You are probably a closeted homosexual yourself. There is a "gay parade" of some sort almost everyday in New Orleans. I truly hope that you have a miserable existence...which I'm sure you do, because anyone living with that much hate must. Dear Sugar Community, Do not defend this man.

I definitely think you can separate Hagee's "commitment to the independence and the freedom of the state of Israel" from other beliefs he may hold on Israel. This is probably a big part of the reason McCain chose those specific words rather than saying he is proud of Hagee's "thoughts on Israel," or something to that effect. And I definitely don't agree with Hagee's assessment of the Catholic Church, but also don't believe McCain has ever said anything in reference to even remotely agreeing with Hagee on the Catholic Church.

I am terrible with spelling, so no worries about that! It wasn't a picture of Hagee on Olbermann, it was a video clip. I saw it a month ago when Hagee first endorsed McCain. I can't direct you to a website if I didn't see it on a website. Sorry about that! I saw a clip from the McCain interview on Olbermann earlier this week (it was a clip from Meet the Press, I believe). They were talking about Hagee, and he was specifically asked whether he would seek his endorsement again if he could. That was very important to me, because I didn't know specifically if McCain had just received the endorsement, or if he sought it out. McCain very clearly said yes, that he would do it again. He kind of laughed a bit at the question, and had his hands together infront of him when he said it. McCain: "And I am very proud of the Pastor John Hagee's spiritual leadership to thousands of people and I am proud of his commitment to the independence and the freedom of the state of Israel." I think don't think you can separate his "commitment to Israel" with out recognizing that he wants Israel united so that the Rapture can happen and most Jews, including Israelis, will die and go to hell. Also, his spiritual leadership involves calling the Catholic Church the "great wh*re".

So, even if Hagee is anti-Semetic, which I still question, given the number of Jewish groups that support him, I still fail to see how this translates to McCain sharing these views. Just as Obama doesn't share all of Wright's views, McCain doesn't share all of the views of any individual who supports him. (And of course, Obama and Clinton don't, either.)

I would definitely be interested to see footage of that interview, because I saw something with McCain earlier this week where he stated the exact opposite. I would also be interested to see the picture from Olbermann. In addition, you still haven't shown me where McCain says he agrees with these views of Hagee's.

Actually, he said this past weekend on Meet the Press (I believe) that if he had to seek his endorsement again, he would. "Jill, when did Hagee say that Jewish people need to be punished? From what I'm reading right now, it seems that he's actually very pro-Israel." He is pro-Israel only in the sense that he thinks that they will ultimately bring about Armageddon. Some people like Hagee interpret the end of times to involve the US defending Israel from Iran. 200,000 Jewish people would convert and rise to heaven. The rest will go to hell. While he frames his views on Israel as protecting them, what he is really doing is bring the lambs to slaughter. I saw a video on Olbermann which showed Hagee infront of a large board with pictures. It showed heaven way at the top, the middle ground for Christians, and then there was a line at the bottom that read "THE JEWS". It had a cut out of a woman with large eyes and big nose riding a tiger. He was pointing at it and saying incredibly degrading things. Actually, Jill, when did Hagee say that Jewish people need to be punished? From what I'm reading right now, it seems that he's actually very pro-Israel. He's been there several times, met with many Jewish Prime Ministers, received awards from Jewish groups, and established pro-Jewish groups.

Jillness, McCain has also repeatedly stated that accepting Hagee's endorsement was a mistake. I judge neither McCain nor Obama based on Hagee or Wright. Obama sought a relationship with Wright, you claim McCain sought an endorsement from Hagee (although I can't find any evidence of this). I don't see how that's a big difference. Also, I can only find evidence of McCain saying that he actually doesn't agree with Hagee on everything. Where did you find evidence of him praising Hagee's views on Israel? (I'm not saying it's not there, just that I can't seem to find it.)

Well, it just goes to show that the "alarm" over Rev. Wright's comments isn't really heartfelt. It is time to move past all these pastors and their views, regardless to the candidate they endorse.
