Good Luck With Your Engagement . . . This Time

Maybe it's a joke? That's what I thought when a friend showed me this exchange that came up in her Facebook feed. But the only way I can figure this commenter is kidding is if the engagement status is fake, and the commenter knows it.

I love how completely unapologetic it is. Maybe someone's trying to get out of being a bridesmaid?

It's not necessarily passive-aggressive. Sometimes there are joke engagements, and sometimes people are "serial" engagers, but never get married. I think it depends on the situation, and how close of a friend the commenter is to the person who put up the status. Would I make this comment on my ex-husband's Wall? Possibly. Would I text it to him? Absolutely. We've remained decent to each other, and have quite a few mutual friends still. Everyone would get a kick out of it. Heck, he told my new husband in person, "Good luck--maybe it'll work out better for you two" when he found out that we were engaged. Again, context matters.

I can't believe you all know so many girls who get engaged all the time! Crazy! I knew a couple who broke up and called off their engagement a few times, and each time they got back together they were immediately engaged again. It got annoying trying to keep up with whether they were actually getting married, and I could totally see me making a snide remark like this had Facebook existed back then. In the end, they called off the wedding for good one week before it was supposed to happen. Those of us who'd bought plane tickets already probably would have made many nasty comments about that too :)

yeah i bet it was one of those ppl who just get engaged to all their boyfriends. I don't know anyone like that, but I think I would be annoyed with it. Can't blame this commenter (probably)!

haha, exchequette, that takes balls! Do it! ;) Some people seem to be engaged to everyone their dating...If you've only been engaged once (actually planning to get married) that would be a rude comment. You know, there's a big difference betweet being engaged and actually planning on getting married soon.

Anybody else love failbook.com? That's what this made me think of. If it was just a "joke" engagement, it reminds me of something I wanted to do: my husband recently deleted his facebook account, so I wanted to list myself as "widowed." I mentioned this to a couple of people and at least one of them thought that was a horrible idea and went into this story about a girl who really was widowed young and blah blah blah. But I'm still thinking of doing it, since my husband is dead to facebook. I mean, it's just facebook, people!

I have a friend who has been engaged 4 times in the last year to 4 different guys - that would be and has been my answer. we stopped trying to remember her boyfriends names because it avoids embarrassment when she shows up with someone else and we all assume he's the one she was engaged to last time we all got together...

Honestly, I don't blame the commenter. I know of a girl who's been engaged to almost every boyfriend she has had, but they've always ended up breaking up. Now she's engaged to her current boyfriend. Sometimes it's hard to be happy for people like that. You can't help but wonder if this is the real thing or if it's going to turn out like all the others. Now if the engaged person has only been engaged once before, I do think the commenter is a bit harsh.
I have been engaged before and called it off a few months before the wedding. These kind of comments are my worst fear if I ever get engaged again! Don't people deserve a second chance?
